This thematic issue of American Studies in Scandinavia brings together four articles ghat examine processes of belonging and membership in the Latino/a population, i.e., the population of Latin American descent, living in the United States. From different theoreticqal angles, and with diverse wmpirical foci, the articles attempt to go beyond a traditional emphasis on processes of integration and assimilation by addressing the shifting and often conflicting notions and narratives of cross- and transnational membership that emerge as part of the movement of the Latino/a population into the mainstream of society.
