Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
In a globalized world where information is created and preserved, but also distributed and shared across time and space, semantic interoperability has become a challenge. This master’s thesis examines the challenges of semantic interoperability in cross-border information exchange, as well as potential challenges related to the RiC framework. Through a concept analysis and a warrant analysis, the three core entities record resource, agent, and event within the new RiC framework for archival description developed by the ICA are defined and compared. Unlike established archival standards, the RiC framework is based on a relational and network-oriented model intended to meet the needs of digital information storage. Overall, the analysis demonstrates that the concepts Record resource, Agent, and Event cannot be regarded as semantically coherent across the two national contexts. This difference is not merely terminological but is rooted in differing archival-theoretical and organizational assumptions regarding what these concepts are and how they should be represented in metadata. The RiC-CM framework offers a potential solution by providing a unified, internationally applicable model for frictionless understanding. At the same time, challenges remain in creating shared understanding and interpretation, as the examples show that archival practice is still largely shaped by national traditions.
