Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors influencing companies’ choice of port and how these factors are prioritized in logistical decision-making processes within a Swedish regional context. The study adopts a qualitative research approach and is based on semi-structured interviews with representatives from both companies and port actors. The empirical material is analyzed through thematic analysis and complemented by a multi-criteria analysis and Kendall’s Tau to examine the degree of agreement between actors’ priorities.  The findings show that port selection is a complex and multidimensional decision in which several factors are considered simultaneously. Although cost emerges as a central factor, the study demonstrates that companies primarily focus on the overall economics of the transport chain rather than direct port charges. Factors such as delivery reliability, operational efficiency, capacity, flexibility, and logistical functionality are often considered equally important. Furthermore, geographical proximity is shown to be significant, as shorter transport distances may reduce costs and lead times. However, the geographically closest port is not always selected when alternative ports offer superior logistical conditions, higher capacity or more reliable transport solutions.  The analysis is based on a transport economics perspective, network theory, and institutional theory. The combination of these perspectives demonstrates that port choice cannot be explained by a single factor but is instead shaped through the interaction of economic, logistical, and organizational conditions. Consequently, the study contributes to a broader understanding of how companies prioritize between different factors when selecting ports within a regional logistics context.
