Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

One of the central responsibilities of the Swedish Inspectorate of Auditors (SIA) and its disciplinary board is to ensure that auditors uphold high professional quality in their work. Nevertheless, a number of auditors are subjected to disciplinary sanctions each year. Previous research has demonstrated that background factors may influence audit quality. The purpose of this study was therefore to map supervisory cases analyse how factors such as firm affiliation, professional title, and gender affect both the likelihood of being subjected to supervisory review and the severity of the resulting sanction. The study also complements Sundgren and Svanström (2017), who examined the impact of supervisory cases and sanctions in the Swedish audit context. As part of a research project at the Centre for Research on Economic Relations (CER) at Mid Sweden University, data on supervisory sanctions were collected from published protocols of the Swedish Inspectorate of Auditors. In total, 312 supervisory cases from the period 2017 to 2024 were analysed. These cases were first systematically mapped and subsequently subjected to hypothesis testing through statistical analyses. Although the underlying premise of a profession is that it should display homogeneity, the results indicate that certain groups of auditors are more frequently represented in supervisory cases than others. Specifically, auditors employed at smaller firms, approved (non-authorized) auditors, and male auditors are overrepresented among those subjected to supervisory sanctions. However, the findings reveal no significant differences between auditors at Big 4 firms and those at other firms, nor between male and female auditors, with respect to the severity of sanctions once imposed. In contrast, approved auditors are more likely than authorized auditors to receive more severe sanctions. The results provide a basis for practical implications and suggestions for future research.
