This study examines and synthesizes research on transformative learning in geography fieldwork at university level - a topic that remains relatively unexplored. It does so by reviewing research studies about transformative learning in geography fieldwork. Three geographic themes are identified across the found literature where transformative learning in geography fieldwork is particularly useful in building and enhancing understanding: sustainable development, place, and cultural encounters. The study further discusses how transformative learning in geography fieldwork promotes an advanced educational approach that encourages students to engage and participate in the field, and to challenge their perceptions, confront their beliefs, and broaden their understanding. We term this process “more-than-education” as it extends field-based learning in geography beyond traditional educational content by stimulating critical thinking and providing necessary skills to navigate the complex and conflictful world of today. Ultimately, our study serves as a valuable resource for educators seeking to enrich geography fieldwork with transformative learning experiences.
