Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This work aims to identify and analyze different materials, identifying relevant material categories in order to present an overview of the environmental impact of these material categories. The work was carried out as a qualitative and structured literature study supported by secondary data from scientific articles, databases and environmental declarations. The work also includes a simplified life cycle assessment to complement the literature review.  The materials studied included different steels, metals and polymers.

The work on the literature review and the life cycle assessment has had a consistent focus on the Crade to Gate and End of Life phases. The results show that some materials, such as polypropylene, have a lower climate impact, but the biggest gain is in the recycling potential where aluminum proves to be a competitive material. At the same time, environmental and health risks emerged for some metals, such as brass containing lead.

The study contributes with a compilation of 9 different material categories and their environmental performance that can be used as a basis for further product development and sustainability work. To ensure applicability in practice, it is proposed that future studies be supplemented with more technical data, practical material tests and more detailed LCA models.
