Abstract [en]
Fluorinated hydrocarbons are a widespread problem in the society and the remediation technologies are not yet fully developed, perhaps much because of the large numbers and by so, different properties, of chemicals that the PFAS universe is containing. Through a literature review, phytoremediation as technology is examined to investigate factors that influence the efficiency and management of PFAS contaminated areas. Some removal of PFAS has been shown and the factors that the scientific community is emphasizing and researching is categorized by codes and further analysed by themes a to understand the influence and processes of phytoextraction. Resulting in factors of influence by physiochemical, biological and management means. The study show that the importance of phytoremediation lies in what type of PFAS chemical and what type of plant that is subject of a remediation project. Factors of importance can also be seen in the abiotic environment, water/soil remediation and growing conditions such as soil properties with influences from carbon content and pH, salinity.Factors that are of biological nature is also of importance, such as plant species with different production of lipid and protein content, as well as factors of plants ability to handle the toxicity of the PFAS chemicals. The technology is assumed to include more management factors recently in time and is perhaps by that maturing with efficiencyincreasing studies of for examples amendments. It is concluded that phytoremediation can be promising in some areas, although not all the authors included in this study, agree with that, but applications and the factors may change the removal efficiency of using plants to extract PFAS from contaminated areas.
