Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The amendment to the law (SFS 2010:800) in 2014 meant that most of the special educational adaptations that pupils in compulsory school need must be carried out in regular teaching by the class or subject teacher. Today, it therefore rests a great responsibility on primary school teachers to both be up to date in terms of knowledge and to have the ability to implement the adaptations without any special educator present. The purpose of our study is to investigate the primary school teachers' experiences of implementing special education adaptations in the classroom. We have conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with ten primary school teachers from primary, middle, and high school. The results show that many teachers do not possess the adequate knowledge and that the schools have not trained the teachers to the extent recommended by law. One conclusion is that primary school teachers largely must rely on their experience and collegial knowledge to handle the situations that arise in teaching. It appears that the teachers mostly prefer to use general adaptations, which means that many students with decided support measures do not receive the individual adaptations they are entitled to. Another conclusion is that the change in the law, which was intended as a reform within the school today, does not work to the full extent.
