Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This report investigates the effectiveness of various AI tools when used as aids in coding. The primary question this work aims to answer is: Which AI tools are best suited for optimizing the coding process? To answer this question, the study was divided into three research questions addressing the problems developers face today, the available tools, and which tools best solve these problems. The study focused solely on comparing Large Language Models. The comparison was conducted through a survey in which developers answered questions and statements about the responses from AI tools. The AI tools ChatGPT, Phind, and Copilot were prompted to explain code, improve code, and

create code. The results show that all three AI tools have the potential to be used as aids in all three tested scenarios. However, developers preferred the responses from Phind and Copilot. The results also indicate that the effectiveness of AI tools is a subjective assessment based on the developers’ individual conditions and preferences. The study concludes that all tested AI tools can be used to solve all tested tasks,

but they have limitations in their capabilities that must be considered if these tools are used as aids in coding.
