Abstract [en]
This essay explores both the advantages and disadvantages of Sweden's membership in Nato by analyzing the consequences for Swedish security, foreign policy and relations with regional actors. By examining the arguments from different political parties such as Moderaterna, Liberalerna, Vänsterpartiet and Miljöpartiet, a comparison of the pros and cons of possible membership in Nato is presented. Realism is used as a theoretical framework to understand the state's actions within the international system, where the emphasis is on securing its own survival and power.
Moderaterna and Liberalerna advocate Nato membership to increase security through cooperation and common defense resources, while the Vänsterpartiet and the Miljöpartiet oppose membership to preserve national sovereignty and avoid conflicts that do not benefit Sweden. By understanding realism's perspective on balance of power and security, one can interpret politicians' arguments based on their view of the state's survival and interests. Finally, the essay shows that the consequences of Nato membership for Sweden should be carefully assessed with regard to its potential impact on national security interests and sovereignty.
