Syftet med denna fallstudie var att undersöka vilka förutsättningar chefer har för att arbeta med hållbarhet, och identifiera vad som krävs för att cheferna ska kunna arbeta med hållbarhet. Studien genomfördes våren 2022, på det statligt ägda aktiebolaget Samhall. Metoden inspirerades av grundad teori med abduktiv ansats. Hållbarhetschefen, samt sex första-linjechefer i ett distrikt i Samhall intervjuades. Information på Samhalls webbsida, Samhalls hållbarhetspolicy samt Års- och hållbarhetsredovisning inkluderas i analysen. Studien visar att cheferna har en svag förståelse för begreppet hållbarhet, och att hållbarhet inte är en del av verksamhetens värderingar. Vidare förefaller det som att systematiskt arbete med uppföljning och utveckling av hållbarhetsfaktorer inte görs på ett sätt som driver en hållbarhetskultur. Analysen visar att cheferna arbetar med social hållbarhet, och att de, med de förutsättningar som finns idag, har liten möjlighet att påverka ekonomisk- eller ekologisk hållbarhet, trots att man mäter på detta i organisationen. This case study investigates what conditions first line managers have for working with CSR. The study was conducted in the public company Samhall, in the spring of 2022. The method was inspired by grounded theory and used an abductive approach. The company’s Head of Sustainability along with six first-line managers were interviewed. The analysis includes information from the company website, the sustainability policy, the annual report, and the government’s owner policy and directive. The study shows that managers have a poor understanding of the concept of sustainability, and that sustainability is not part of the core values in the organization. Furthermore, it shows that systematic work with follow-up and development of sustainability factors is not done in a way that supports a culture for sustainability. It also shows that managers work with social sustainability, and that they, under current circumstances, have limited possibilities to engage in activities that affect the ecological or economical result, even if there are metrics in place for this. The authors propose a set of activities that Samhall could engage in, to strengthen the company’s sustainability work.
