A software for analysis on plenoptic capture systems: Development of an application enabled by GPU accelerated engines

Abstract [en]

The research group Realistic3D is developing future realistic 3D visualization for entertainment and industry. Their focus is to improve capture compression and presentation technology by making use of sophisticated signal and image processing of plenoptic capture systems. This thesis examines the possibility to design and implement a software for interactive analysis on plenoptic capture systems. Enabled by GPU accelerated ray tracing and scene management, the software will simulate light rays passing through 3D models of plenoptic capture systems. The software is referred to by the working title “PlenoptiX”. Included in this thesis are requirements gathering, an evaluation of the potential of the two GPU accelerated application engines NVIDIA SceniX and NVIDIA OptiX and an implementation of a first prototype. All requirements were gathered from a representative from Realistic3D. The technical specifications of SceniX and OptiX were evaluated with respect to the requirements on PlenoptiX. The results of these evaluations were that both SceniX and OptiX fulfilled all the requirements and should be used in the development of PlenoptiX. The prototype of PlenoptiX was implemented as a Windows application where the user can view and interact with 3D models of plenoptic capture systems. The resulting prototype meets the requirements, such as using SceniX for visualization of a 3D model, using OptiX with SceniX scene data and loading 3D models. The conclusions of the potential for further development of PlenoptiX together with OptiX and SceniX was that OptiX shows promising usage but SceniX should not be used in further development because NVIDIA is not updating SceniX.
