On chelating surfactants: Molecular perspectives and application prospects2019In: Journal of Molecular Liquids, ISSN 0167-7322, E-ISSN 1873-3166, Vol. 278, p. 688-705Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Chelating agents, molecules that very strongly coordinates certain metal ions, are used industrially as well as in consumer products to minimize disturbances and increase performance of reactions and applications. The widely used sequestering agents, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) belong to this branch of readily water-soluble compounds. When these chemical structures also have hydrophobic parts, they are prone to adsorb at air-water interfaces and to self-assemble. Such bifunctional molecules can be called chelating surfactants and will have more extended utilization prospects than common chelating agents or ordinary ionic surfactants. The present review attempts to highlight the fundamental behavior of chelating surfactants in solution and at interfaces, and their very specific interactions with metal ions. Methods to recover chelating surfactants from metal chelates are also described. Moreover, utilization of chelating surfactants in applications for metal removal in environmental engineering and mineral processing, as well as for metal control in the fields of biology, chemistry and physics, is exemplified and discussed.

Introducing domain knowledge for selection of active factors in designed experiments2000In: International Journal of Reliability, Quality and Safety Engineering (IJRQSE), ISSN 0218-5393, Vol. 7, no 4, p. 341-356Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Unreplicated factorial designs are widely used for designed experimentation in industry. In the analysis of designed experiments, the experimental factors influencing the response must be identified and separated from those that do not. An abundance of procedures intended to perform this selection have been introduced in the literature. A recent study indicated that the procedure due to Box and Meyer outperforms the lot of the other selection procedures in terms of efficiency and robustness. The procedure of Box and Meyer rests on a quasi-Bayesian foundation and utilizes generic domain knowledge, in the form of a common-for-all-factors a priori probability, that a factor significantly influences the response, to calculate an a posteriori probability for each factor. This paper suggests a strategy for introducing more elaborate domain knowledge about the experimental factors in the procedure of Box and Meyer, aiming to further improve its performance.

    Abstract [en]

The development of IT has enabled the Internet of Things. Internet of Things is connected devices that communicate with each other and generate data that can then be used for different purposes. The number of connected devices is estimated to 20.4 billion by year 2020. The technology allows the automotive industry to connect its vehicles, which is called Internet of Vehicles, an application of the Internet of Things and intelligent cars. The amount of scientific literature that addresses the economic aspects related to the Internet of Things is scarce and need to be investigated further. The connected car is a disruptive technology that is expected to affect the automotive industry and their business models radically in the next few years and nobody really knows how the industry may look like the next 10-15 years. This type of disruptive technology requires companies to have the competence to implement innovative business models. The study focuses on the connected car from a business perspective and makes no insight into technical aspects or security challenges. The purpose of the study is to create an under-standing of the challenges facing the automotive business models with the introduction of the Internet of Things, which gives the automotive industry the opportunity to connect their cars to a greater extent than before. The study's results show that the value proposition and the channels are the most important parts to focus on in the business model. In order for companies to capitalize on the connection, it is extremely important that the customers understand the value of the connection and that the companies properly manage the information derived from the connected cars. Today, companies offer services or increased value in existing business models to strengthen their brand. The respondents share the opinion that the traditional business models will not change radically as long as the ownership of the car stay the same. Ownership and autonomous cars are the factors that are expected to affect the automotive industry the most. According to the respondents in the study, in order to deal with disruptive innovations in the industry, courage, adaptability, prospects and innovative thinking are required.

Implementation av Lean i traditionell verkstadsmiljö: En fallstudie i ett kollektivtrafikbolag2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how Lean can be implemented in a traditional workshop environment for a public transport company within the bus industry in Sweden. Public transport companies in Sweden suffer from the same problem and there are low margins. Lean can be a way to increase its margins and in this study it focuses on an ongoing Lean implementation and also previous implementations within the fall company. The study is made as a case study with a mixed method, it contains both qualitative and quantitative parts and that the approach is abductive.

The information about the ongoing Lean implementation and previous initiatives has been gathered from interviews and observations. Since then, the information has been analyzed and discussed to come to a conclusion. It is that Lean can be implemented in a traditional workshop environment, but with different results. It depends on how you do it and the study shows that if you choose to include management from the beginning and educate them before the implementation starts, chances are that it will be successful. Only then does the study show that it is a winning concept. Another problem is also the inherited way of working in this environment, it is more or less affected by a bygone era when the business was municipal and did not have the same return requirements as today.

The case company on which the study was made has previously implemented Lean, but without success, largely because management was not included. It was an external party that carried out the implementation, which made it difficult for the maintenance management to see the purpose and the purpose of the implementation which was thus excluded. On the other hand, the ongoing implementation has gained a completely different attachment to the management, much because the implementation goes through them. Maintenance management has also been trained in advance before implementation began, which the study shows was one of the success factors.

Mobil individanpassad realtidsinformation i kollektivtrafiken: En fallstudie på Tågkompaniet2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The total traveling with different types of transportation has increased drastically since the 50´s. Despite this increase, the use of the public transportation has decreased in percentage which has its explanation in the overall increased use of cars as transportation. Many researchers believes that better traffic information in the public transport can lead to increased use. Therefore this study aims to investigate how mobile personalized real-time information can increase customer satisfaction in the public transport in order to maintain and attract more travelers. The study addresses the problem through a case study at the Swedish transit agency Tågkompaniet, where customers and staff are studied in order to map the present situation regarding information in the public transport. The case study also sets out to investigate which type of real-time information that is considered to be most important for the travelers. At last the study also investigate which types of technical solutions that is needed, and how the needs of travelers can be considered to be able to offer mobile personalized real-time information. The findings are that there is a dissatisfaction regarding the transit information among both travelers and staff, and that their needs and demands must be met to a greater extent in order to increase the customer satisfaction. Furthermore, the findings are also that information attributes regarding delays and disruptions in the public transport is considered to be most important by travelers. Functions such as subscribe to information, push notifications and information associated with the transit ticket are necessary to be able to provide travelers with mobile personalized real-time information. Lastly the study provides a tool to consider traveler needs in development and evaluation of mobile personalized information systems within the public transport.

Enklare väg in i ett nytt språk: En webbkurs för nybörjare i arabiska2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this project is to develop a website for swedes that want to learn Arabic. The purpose of the website is to facilitate the learning of Arabic. A large part of the project has been dedicated to study second language acquisition, language education and computer-aided language learning as well as to study other websites. The website I have created is based on a MySQL database. The website is built with PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery and AJAX. Apart from the website there is an interface for administrators where they can add words and sentences to the website. The words and sentences in the database are stored so that morphemes are separated as far as possible. An advantage with that solution is that it facilitates visualizations, creation of new functions and that administrators can add new words and sentences with less effort. Some of the functions that the website offers are: Each word in the wordlist are represented with its most common inflections. Each word can be broken up into letters. For each word you can click to find sentences where the word is included, for each sentence you can click on a word to find more information about it. Each sentence are represented with both a translation and a word by word translation. Users can save words and be tested on them. To value the website a survey has been done. The survey shows that the website in general is good and that there is a need for it, while the look and the navigation needs to be improved.

Garvsyrebetsning: Betsning under 1920-talet2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In today’s society, it is necessary for organizations to continuously improve their strategic processes in order to successfully retain competitiveness in the market. In a competitive industry, it is of high importance that the internal strategy of an organization is smooth and effective. So, which concept or method will most efficiently improve these processes? Will a combination of two different improvement concepts achieve a better result? This study is based on the integration of two methods that will be implemented on two internal processes in a sales agent organization. The two methods are Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and Total Quality Management (TQM) The course of action will be systematically described and analyzed to receive a clear overview of the process before and after the developed improvements. The purpose of our study is to investigate if the organization’s internal working routines can be simplified and more efficient through integrating the two improvement methods suggested. As the study was performed on two different processes, two results were achieved. The organization is today performing one of these processes, which allows us to accurately follow the developments and improvements. Although for the second one, it has yet to be developed further than simply to the early stage of the implementation. Therefore, it is currently difficult to see a clear result regarding this change being made. Instead a suggestion for improvement was delivered to the organization for possible future use with a purpose to achieve an efficient internal process and thereby create a competitive advantage in the market. The study has shown that a company with a corporate culture that is open for change and with committed leadership can be benefit during development work.

Exploring quality challenges and the validity of excellence models2016In: International Journal of Operations & Production Management, ISSN 0144-3577, E-ISSN 1758-6593, Vol. 36, no 10, p. 1201-1221Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify and explore important quality-related challenges facing organizations, and investigate how current excellence models incorporate these challenges. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on a Delphi study of Swedish organizations. Forty-nine challenges were generated and ranked according to importance and the ten top-ranked challenges were compared to the principles of four excellence models. Findings: The excellence models still seem to be relevant since their content matches many of the identified challenges. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the Swedish Institute for Quality models were found to have the most comprehensive coverage, while the International Organization for Standardization model had limited coverage. Research limitations/implications: Three areas for further research were identified: first, how quality management (QM) can evolve in different contexts that have varying needs in terms of adaptive and explorative capabilities; second, the interfaces of QM and sustainability, and ways to understand how customers and stakeholders can be active contributors to improvements; and third, the roles of the owners and board of directors regarding QM, and how to organize and distribute responsibilities of the QM work. Practical implications: There are three important challenges that future revisions of excellence models could address: first, making QM a strategic issue for company owners; second, involving customers in the improvement activities; and third, developing processes that are robust yet still easily adaptable. Originality/value: The Delphi study identified upcoming challenges in the QM area based on input from 188 quality professionals.

Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Achieving shared values: Learning from Disney2007Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The need to achieve a strong corporate culture is one of the key questions within Total Quality Management (TQM). TQM is generally considered to be based on a number of core values; such as customer focus, decisions based on facts, process orientation, continuous improvement, everybody’s commitment and leadership, (Hellsten & Klefsjö, 2000). The core values should ideally be conformed to by all employees within a TQM organization, (ibid). Achieving these core values seems to be rewarding. Many companies that have succeeded in adapting their core values have received quality awards, e.g. Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award and EFQM Excellence Model. These quality awards are based on values that are widely considered to be the building blocks of effective TQM implementation (Hendricks & Singhal, 1999). There are a lot of descriptions in literature about the importance of working with the ideas of TQM such as putting focus on the customer, establishing processes and also about educating the employees in using tools of improvement, but very little focus on discussing how shared values really are achieved.   A common set of values within an organization is often referred to as the company or corporate culture. A strong culture implies that there is uniformity among the employees regarding, for example values (Pinder 1998). In our literature studies we came across two interesting strategies that combined together provide a tactic for working with shared values to attain a strong corporate culture. According to Chatman (1989) the best way is an integration of the strategies of selection and socialization. That implies both considering values at the selection when the organization chooses its members, by recruiting an individual with the right values and later on by maintaining or reinforcing values by socialization which can be done by training, orientation and other methods. As regards working with achieving TQM values we mostly encountered the use of socialization and feel that there is a need for broader thinking by putting greater emphasis on the selection process when recruiting new members into the organization.   The purpose of this paper is to raise the discussion about how to achieve homogeneity of values, such as TQM values in order to be a successful organization. The presented theories are accompanied by an observation from the renowned Walt Disney World in Florida, providing an example of how they are working with the selection strategy.

Municipal Solid Waste Management, Limbe Municipality Cameroon.2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The overview of this paper is about municipal solid waste management in Cameroon and suggested methods for improvement. Garbage bins for sorting has been mentioned in this paper as one of the major infrastructure needed in all the areas, particularly in the low standards areas. The installation of garbage bins for source separation, building of transfer stations next to paved roads have been mentioned as one of the primary solution for both the waste vehicles and households. This will increase the waste collection system and will reduce illegal dumping of waste. Population, urbanisation and industrial growth has also been mentioned in this paper as one of the main causes of increase waste generation that has lead to illegal dumping of waste in unwanted areas. Low level of education, inadequate financial standings or resources, poor enforcement of waste management regulations and governance has often led to major waste management problems in Cameroon. This paper also presents a vital analysis of the distance between garbage bins and households as well as possible solutions. The method used in this paper is both primary and secondary data’s which has been explained below. The three filter theory and the waste hierarchy model have as well been used.

The case study of Limbe municipality has been used to bring out waste management related problems and recommended possible solutions for improvement.

Key words: Environment, municipal solid waste management, Limbe municipality, Cameroon, awareness.

Lean – En utveckling från produktion till välfärd och service: En litteraturstudie av hur Lean utvecklats från produktion till välfärds- och servicebranschen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study consists of two studies around Lean. The studies are limited to two databases and three different sectors, the industry sector where Lean originated from, and the welfare and service sectors.

The first study is a quantitative pilot study on published articles. The purpose was to get an understanding of what extent the different sectors get published, compared to each other. The result was illustrated in a graph where 40 articles per year were proportionally divided between the three sectors.

The main study is a literature review where a scoring matrix was used to cull the selected articles. The remaining articles where compared to the “Toyota house” to answer the research questions:

In what way has the definition of Lean changed from the manufacturing-based improvement philosophy it originated as, to the concept that is used in different sectors today?

How does the specific sector affect the implementation of Lean, is there a difference in the Lean that is described in the literature compared to the Lean that is used in the welfare or service sectors?

The study found in the chosen literature is that the sectors that are new at using Lean are using less of the tools available and in a smaller part of the organization, instead of using it on the whole organization. Many case studies where found that describes what tool was used, but not how they were used. One sector with many published articles was the construction sector, but they were overlooked due to the limitations of the study.

    Abstract [en]

Young people have low influence on societal issues even though one of the general objectives of politics for youth is to give young people the opportunity to participate and influence. The municipalities of Sweden have an important role to increase the democratic participation of young people. In order to succeed, the municipalities need to get better knowledge about how they reach out to young people, how young people prefer to express their opinions and the requirements for participation. The purpose of the study is to investigate how digitalization can strengthen the democratic participation of young people. To find out what is needed for young people to become more involved and which digital channels that can be used to create better conditions for participation. To answer the problem of the study, triangulation is used between qualitative and quantitative approaches, and the research strategies are literature study, questionnaire and interviews. The results of the survey show that important conditions for participation are that young people have the resources, as platforms and knowledge, to participate in societal issues in an active way. In addition, it is a prerequisite for young people to feel that their opinions can make a difference. If these conditions are fulfilled, participation among young people may be increase. The digital channels that young people prefer to use to provide feedback and to receive information from the municipality are websites, applications and emails. Another digital channel that the municipality can use to reach out to young people with information is Facebook. Finally, it is important that municipalities are responsive and keep up to date with what young people ask for, as trends on digital channels changes continuously.

En kombinerad fallstudie och designmetodik om lagerutrymme: Scenario- och processanalys på SCA Logistics2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

SCA Östrand implements an expansion of its current production of pulp. Today's 435 000 tonnes will be 900 000 tonnes when the new production line is put into operation in 2018. SCA Logistics, which is responsible for the storage and transportation of pulp would therefore like to know how much area that is currently storing pulp and if the existing surface is sufficient to cope with the increase in volume from SCA Östrand. If the surface is not enough, SCA Logistics want to know how much space will be needed to cope with the increase in volume. The study is a combined case study and design methodology. Through process mapping, various scenarios are being developed to implement the current status and future analysis where the purpose of the study can be determined by calculating the maximum area, volume and fill rate. Information has been obtained from printed literature, scientific papers, previous theses, and observations of the process in SCA Logistics in the port of Tunadal. Relevant data has been obtained from an external supervisor at SCA Logistics. The study provides answers to how much space is available at present time, the fact that the current surface will not be sufficient to cope with the increase in volume and a minimum of additional 5800 m2 surface area will be needed to store pulp on.

The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining conducted a study in early 2012 to consider the effectiveness of performing external post-clearance inspections. GICHD took into account the practices of the International Mine Action Standards, the International Organization for Standardization and the numerous mine action programs worldwide. It also worked with the Swedish company Preference Consulting to determine the mathematical probability of finding a mine/explosive remnant of war during external post-clearance inspections. Lastly, GICHD examined the normative effect of external post-clearance inspections as well as the financial cost associated with their execution.

    Abstract [en]

A sustainable development becomes more and more important with an increasing number of catastrophic and long-term changes to the environment due to global warming. This also means that all the actors in the society needs to take their responsibility to combat this development. One of these actors are the private sector where the investors plays a large part in which companies that gets to develop their ideas and make a difference in the world. So, the question is: are investors taking that responsibility today and invest in start-ups with a focus on sustainable development in their business plans. This thesis aims to study how inclined investors are to invest in start-ups with a focus on sustainable development in their business plan. This is tested though Discrete Choice Experiments where 14 investors got to choose between three different companies with different levels of focus on sustainable development. Company A with the least amount of sustainability, company B with some focus and company C with a high focus on sustainable development. The Discrete Choice Experiments were distributed through a survey format where the companies were represented with a Business Model Canvas each and the investors first got to choose between company A & B, then A & C, and then company B & C. The results show that investors chose company A with the least amount of focus on sustainable development in 26 percent of the cases, company B with some focus in 45 percent, and company C with a high amount of focus in 29 percent of the cases. The study also shows a variation between different groups of investors, i.e. the investors who identified themselves as women were more inclined on investing in more sustainable options then men, and angel investors showed a clear willingness to invest in sustainability compared to venture capitals. The conclusions of the study are that its purpose was fulfilled and that the research questions was answered, investors showed an inclination to investing in companies with some focus on sustainable development but not too much. The results of the study can be used by companies in need of investments since they can see what group they should focus on to increase their chances. It is despite this also important to remember that the reliability and the validity of the study can be criticised with flaws for example in the reputability of the results. Future research within the area should study larger populations of investors to see if the same patterns repeat itself in other groups. It should also split the different attributes of the business model to see if different attributes play a larger part when investors decide which company to invest in.

Market analysis for a simulated microgravity random positioning machine2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The impact of gravity on organic material such as the human body has been a growing research field ever since the dawn of space flight. The Random Positioning Machine (RPM) is used to simulate microgravity on organisms without the use of real microgravity that is both expensive and scarcely available. This enables in-depth studies on the effect of weightlessness on organic materials in a controlled environment with relatively small means. The RPM has not yet been commercialized to a broader market but the most recent improvements to the machine creates possibilities for a start-up business revolving around the RPM. A method including both qualitative and quantitative models based on a case study were used to capture both aspects and to understand both how far in development the technologies were and the potential in the different market segments. The TRL for the different UVP’s of the RPM were generally ranked high except for the modularity and the market segment ranking shows that, from the four chosen segments, the food fermentation and fat crystallization segments have the most potential. The watch industry showed a minimal amount of potential. The SWOT-analysis on the two segments shows that the biggest weakness is the inexperience with start-ups but that is countered by the possibility for support by the university. For the food fermentation, there is an opportunity for a partnership where the company Swiss Culture Collection has shown interest in cooperation but there is also the threat of end customers equating organisms produced in microgravity with GMO, and by that having a negative impact. For fat crystallization, there is an opportunity with improving the process for producing low-fat products if research shows that microgravity can affect the density of the product. On the other hand, there is a lot of research that needs to be done to get the results.

Att bygga en rygg: En skattjakt i polyeterns underbara värld2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Paper whiteness and its effect on perceived image quality2010In: Final Program and Proceedings - IS and T/SID Color Imaging Conference, The Society for Imaging Science and Technology, 2010, Vol. 50, no 17, p. 62-67Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Whiteness is a commercially important characteristic of paper and board, although its perception depends on many factors that often are neglected by instrumental measurements. High whiteness improves the contrast of printed areas and increases the number of reproducible colours, but few quantitative studies have been published. In this paper, we report just-noticeable image quality difference (JND) from pair wise comparisons of images printed on paper substrate of different shades and whiteness. The JND was estimated to approximately 15 CIE whiteness, for the images and whiteness levels in this study, implying that a large substrate whiteness difference is required to get a significant visual impact on image quality. Unlike previous studies limited to colour rendering issues, the influence of the substrate’s shade as a surrounding frame to the images was also investigated here. It was found that the surrounding frame did not have a significant impact on image quality, when the images had an inherent dim background around the objects in the image. However, floating images in which the image objects are adjacent to the unprinted substrate would need further attention, since their perceived image quality seemed to depend both on the colour reproduction related to whiteness and shade, and on the contrast between the image and the substrate.

    Abstract [en]

Every fourth Swede chooses to invest their capital in sustainable funds. There is consensus on the fact that the financial market has been affected by the increased awareness on sustainability which companies have embraced and now manage extensive CSR-work. The goal of this essay is to answer the question whether sustainable funds contributes larger to a portfolios risk adjusted return than conventional mutual funds and if there is a connection between that and passive or active fund management. The report compares 16 funds between the years of 2012 to 2018, whereas 8 funds are conventional and 8 are sustainable. Furthermore, half of each group is passively managed and half is actively managed. The ratios used to measure risk adjusted return in this essay is the Sharpe ratio and the Sortino Ratio. The results show that the conventional funds have a higher risk adjusted return than the sustainable funds. The result is further compared to previous research and discussed towards the hypotheses presented in the theory chapter.

    Abstract [sv]

Digitala Kundmöten: Hur företag kan erbjuda samma kundvärde i en flerkanalig miljö2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today’s customer meetings are undergoing a change from focusing on individual channels to an optimized experience through all channels. Most companies agree that it is important to establish digital services and channels that strengthen customer relations. However, digitizing physical customer meetings can be a challenge in an organization that has had long-term and personal meetings as a concept of success. This study investigates the value that companies and customers receive in meeting in person and what it takes to create the same value in digital meetings. The goal is to identify which parameters are important in customer meetings and how well they create value in both physical and digital meetings. To identify parameters, a literature study, interviews with employees and customers participating in customer meetings at the company WSP have been conducted and a survey has been sent to customers who participate in customer meetings. The data from the interviews and the survey have been compiled and parameters from previous studies have been confirmed, but new have also been discovered. The result indicates that the need of communication and to develop relationships is the key factors that influence the decision whether digital or physical meetings should be used. The decision is also influenced by time and space constraints. Furthermore, the choice of meeting form depends on the purpose of the meeting and the phase of the relation. At the beginning of a relationship, meetings are required that contribute to trust and commitment. Furthermore, the parameters of competence, understanding, credibility, trust and good conduct also have a significant role in creating value. While sensitivity and communication are the prerequisites for creating value in all forms of meeting.

A public organization has a section for customer service which is responsible of order entry from customers concerning errands within real estate and business equipment, cleaning, transport operations and handicap appliance. According to the co-ordinators in hospitals within the organisation the customers are requesting for staff to talk to physically, meaning a person to speak with face to face. The customers experiencing that it’s sometimes difficult to call customer service or use the web form, which is the only communication paths in the current situation. Proposed changes presented claim that a complement to customer service with local service centers in every hospital. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a change proposition by weigh between efficiency and working environment, this by using multi-criteria analysis. To achieve the goal a decision model is designed in the decision tool DecideIT. The aim of the study is to recommend decision makers to choose one of the options based on as rational grounds as possible. The result of the study showed that the preferred alternative is not to supplement customer service with local service centers. For the most part, the result depending on the survey (represented result from working environment criteria) which showed that the majority of customers do not request a person to speak with face to face at all.

    Abstract [en]

Predictive decision theory explains how humans should make decisions in practice given that they are not always perfect rational decision makers. Based on the prescriptive decision theory, this study addresses criticism of universal decision making models for supplier selections which have the notion of being used uniquely in all types of supplier choice situations. Issues raised are whether this performance is correct and how a dynamic decision-making model could create a more customized decision-making model which does not add much responsibility to the decision maker's judgment. A case study at Logosol, a small industrial company identifies by process mapping a complex supplier selection process consisting of three steps; prototype creation, null-series and production, based on test manufacturing. The supplier selection process is used as the basis for the creation of a dynamic decision making model. Dynamic decision-making models have the basic principle of learning from a decision and using that information in the next decision, which is considered useful in the business case as they not only use test manufacturing for product testing but also for collecting information about the supplier. Finally, the created dynamic decision model shows that universal decision-making models cannot be used in many complex supplier selection processes involving a plurality of steps. The model must be adapted to the company's individual process, however the identification method or some parts of the model used in this study may be used to create a dynamic decision model for other companies or organizations.

    Abstract [en]

Artificial intelligence is a concept based on making machines think. The disciplines that study this range from behavioral science to computer science and mathematics. The different approaches have contributed to categorize the field of artificial intelligence into different areas and the definitions of artificial intelligence are many. The aim of this study has been to investigate how IT consulting companies define and position themselves against artificial intelligence. To achieve this goal, literature on the subject has been studied to define artificial intelligence and to categorize the different areas of artificial intelligence. With the help of these areas, a survey has been conducted with IT consultancies as a target group. It turned out that most respondents work with different types of algorithms based on logic computations and big data, which differ from those areas experts believe will be significant for the future of AI. Both experts and the IT-consultancies are convinced that in the future neural networks will be one of the fields with greatest potential.

    Abstract [sv]

Machine learning and Multi-criteria decision analysis in healthcare: A comparison of machine learning algorithms for medical diagnosis2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Medical records consist of a lot of data. Nevertheless, in today’s digitized society it is difficult for humans to convert data into information and recognize hidden patterns. Effective decision support tools can assist medical staff to reveal important information hidden in the vast amount of data and support their medical decisions. The objective of this thesis is to compare five machine learning algorithms for clinical diagnosis. The selected machine learning algorithms are C4.5, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) and Naïve Bayes classifier. First, the machine learning algorithms are applied on three publicly available datasets. Next, the Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to evaluate which algorithms are more suitable than others for medical diagnosis. Evaluation criteria are chosen with respect to typical clinical criteria and were narrowed down to five; sensitivity, specificity, positive predicted value, negative predicted value and interpretability. Given the results, Naïve Bayes and SVM are given the highest AHP-scores indicating they are more suitable than the other tested algorithm as clinical decision support. In most cases kNN performed the worst and also received the lowest AHP-score which makes it the least suitable algorithm as support for medical diagnosis.

    Abstract [en]

Companies face new challenges almost every day. In order to stay competitive, it is important that companies strive for continuous development and improvement. By describing companies through their processes it is possible to get a clear overview of the entire operation, which can contribute, to a well-established overall understanding of the company. This is a case study based on Stort AB which is a small logistics company specialized in international transportation and logistics solutions. The purpose of this study is to perform value stream mapping in order to create a more efficient production process and propose possible improvements in order to reduce processing time. After performing value stream mapping, data envelopment analysis is used to calculate how lean Stort AB is today and how lean the company can become by implementing the proposed improvements. The results show that the production process can improve efficiency by minimizing waste produced by a bad workplace layout and over-processing. The authors suggested solution is to introduce standardized processes and invest in technical instruments in order to automate the process to reduce process time. According to data envelopment analysis the business is 41 percent lean at present and may soon become 55 percent lean and finally reach an optimum 100 percent lean mode if the process is automated.

Skiing efficiency versus performance in double-poling ergometry2013In: Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, ISSN 1025-5842, E-ISSN 1476-8259, Vol. 16, no 9, p. 987-992Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study is on how leg utilisation may affect skiing efficiency andperformance in double-poling ergometry. Three experiments wereconducted, each with a different style of the double-poling technique:traditional with small knee range-of-motion and fixed heels (TRAD);modern with large knee range-of-motion and fixed heels (MOD1) and modernwith large knee range-of-motion and free heels (MOD2). For each style, motion data were extracted with automatic marker recognition ofreflective markers and applied to a 3D full-body musculoskeletalsimulation model. Skiing efficiency (skiing work divided by metabolicmuscle work) and performance (forward impulse) were computed from thesimulation output. Skiing efficiency was 4.5%, 4.1% and 4.1% for TRAD,MOD1 and MOD2, respectively. Performance was 111, 143 and 149Ns forTRAD, MOD1 and MOD2, respectively. Thus, higher lower body utilisationincreased the performance but decreased the skiing efficiency. Theseresults demonstrate the potential of musculoskeletal simulations forskiing efficiency estimations.

In-situ TEM Probing of Nanomaterials2009Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Nanomaterials because of their small size, may have special properties unlikely to be seen in ordinary types of materials. Nanomaterials like nanotubes, nanowires and nanoparticles are best studied at the nanoscale, vital but also problematic. In this thesis we use a transmission electron microscope (TEM)combined with a scanning tunneling microscope probe. This system allows TEM images to be captured and recorded into a movie together with recordedelectrical data for real time analysis. Using this method we found that the electrical conductivity of molybdenumbased nanowires Mo6S3I6 can be improved by current induced transformation. This might be a general method of improving nanowires which is of high valueif the wires are to be used in electrical circuits or field emission devices. The bending modulus for these nanowires were also determined, by an electromechanical resonance method, to 4.9 GPa. The sintering phase of silver nanoparticles, used in electrical conductive ink for printing electrical circuits, were studied by the in-situ TEM probing method. We observed that percolation path ways are formed and that the dispersive agent of the particles can be pyrolysed into a net of carbon with characteristics similar to graphite. We also developed a method for decorating nanowires and nanotubes with gold nanoparticles. Nanowire particle composites are often used in assembling more complex devices (electronic circuits) or for linking to organic molecules (biosensor applications) and existing particle decoration methods are either difficult or with low yield. By in situ TEM probing we found that carbon nanocages can be grown onto these gold nanoparticles. The size of the gold nanoparticles is controllable an thus the size of the nanocages. These nanocages may be used in medicine- or hydrogen storage-applications.

    Abstract [en]

In today´s society large quantities of goods are shipped both domestic in Sweden as well as across borders. The increasing flow of goods require higher demands on the capacity of the infrastructure and at the same time think and act for a sustainable environment. The overall aim of the study is to highlight development areas for cargo freight by railway. The more specific goals of the study is to identify what enablers that is needed when to establish an intermodal terminal that will handle break-bulk cargo directly from railway, and what barriers that might be. To achieve the aim and goal a qualitative study was conducted with interviews as primal data. Studying the market prerequisites and conducting a competitive intelligence and a benchmark conducted the result. In the result, the interviews and the examined documents has ben compiled, these data has been the basis for the analysis and conclusion. Large parts of the collected data indicated that break bulk cargo handling in intermodal terminals is currently something that is not offered and it is not considered to be economically viable. However, the study also revealed that break bulk cargo handling is a desired service from the business sector as it is regarded as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, something that the business sector appreciate. To cope with this kind of cargo handling and transportation more research is needed, better cooperation between the private- and the public sector as well as infrastructure changes.

    Abstract [en]

Expansion is a challenge that many companies end up in, and an important factor in an expansion is the customers and how the company will do to increase the customer base. This study focuses on the company and to help companies identify new customers. The study uses multi criteria decision analysis to identify potential customers to companies. The purpose of this study is to show that multi criteria decision analysis can be effectively used by companies in identifying new customers and also used as a basis for expansion. By using a case study at Stort AB, a small logistics company, the TOPSIS multi criteria decision method can be tested as a method for identifying new customers. With the help from the employees of the company, participating in the study in the form of decision makers, criteria’s and weights relevant to the company can be determined. Data, criteria and requirements are taken from Stort AB and the Statistiska centralbyrån in order to implement TOPSIS and further information is collected from Stort AB in order to answer questions such as: how much resources are required by the company to cope with expansion and how many new customers do the company need to achieve the desired expansion. The study shows that TOPSIS is a good method of ranking, especially when the problem contains many options. From TOPSIS, a ranking of all potential customers is obtained based on the company's weighting, and it can be read which customer that will suit the company's criteria best. However, the data available for this study were inadequate to provide some accurate answers to the company, but the study provides a good picture for the company how it will look and what will be required of them in an expansion.

Den lilla kemifabriken: En studie för att undersöka om nyttan av skogsrester kan ökas i norra Sveriges inland2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The background of this work is to suggest ways to take care of branches and tops of trees that today are left out in the north of Sweden after logging because it has to low value to be worth transporting. A solution to this is to place small chemical factories in the sparsely populated areas in the inland of Norrland that can take care of the forest residues and break it into valuable chemicals directly in the forest an then transport it to a market. The aim of this work was to find out if it´s a good idea to invest in these small chemical factories in the north of Sweden. This study has been carried out using literature study and interviews of key people. The largest part of the result comes from the interviews. The results of this study show that the small chemical factory is a good idea. Forest residues contains many valuable substances that should be greater used today. The results section of the report describes various factor that are crucial for the small chemical factory and these are: the products that can be produced, what technology that is suitable, if there is an market, who should be taking care of the factory and how the inland endurance will be affected. The conclusions that can be drawn from the study is that the small chemical factory should produce high-grade-sary chemicals directed at the chemical market. It may also be noted that there is existing technology that can be used in the factories, what has been done in the laboratories today can be implemented in the factory. The market will obviously depend on which product that will be produces, but finding a suitable market should not be impossible. The inland endurance will be positively impacted, among other things, the social endurance is enhances when these small chemical factories creates job opportunities in the inland and it can lead to decreasing the emigration.

High voltage vacuum discharge characteristics2001In: European Physical Journal: Applied physics, ISSN 1286-0042, E-ISSN 1286-0050, Vol. 15, no 3, p. 207-212Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Investigation of the high voltage vacuum discharge characteristics-current derivative (di/dt), current, voltage, and soft as well as hard X-rays-versus time has been carried out. Recorded traces indicate pinching of the interelectrode discharge column two or three times during which the voltage increases to values as high as the initial voltage or even higher. X-ray radiation of high penetration power is emitted during these events. In addition, sausage instabilities have been observed during the pinch giving rise to extreme penetrating X-rays caused partly by the pinch voltage and partly by the sausage voltage. Visible electrode studies show the fact that the discharge is restricted to a narrow column. Finally, a theoretical treatment of the discharge mechanism that seems to be in good agreement with the experimental result is also presented.

Optimization combined with process mapping for maximizing product utilization: Investigating the utilization of products in sawmills, a case study2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The handling and utilization of products is an important factor in organization that strive towards and optimal operation, where different methods in the handling of products have a direct effect on the organizations results. This is a case study where a sawmill with a process that is repeated for each new order in the sorting- and packaging of timber. For each scenario, an operator is faced with a decision, where the result of the organization is directly affected by the decision that is made. The decision in question consist of an amount of trays of timber that must be combined in order to meet a constraint in the height of each delivered package. The purpose with this study is to investigate how optimization combined with process mapping can help the organization in maximizing its utilization of products. The study was performed with a mixed methods approach, where a process map was developed to gain understanding of the process. An optimization model was developed and run given collected data. In the process mapping it became clear that for each combination of trays, there is a downgrading in length and/or quality, which affects the total value of the combination. A comparison of the results between the optimization models’ and operators’ solutions showed a theoretical saving of 3 655 435 kr annually, and an increase in product utilization of 3,81 percentage in this process. The results of the study shows that optimization combined with process mapping is effective in the terms of minimizing costs dependent on a decision maker.

An implicit stress gradient plasticity model for describing mechanical behavior of planar fiber networks on a macroscopic scale2010In: Engineering Fracture Mechanics, ISSN 0013-7944, E-ISSN 1873-7315, Vol. 77, no 8, p. 1240-1252Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The plasticity behavior of fiber networks is governed by complex mechanisms. This study examines the effect of microstructure on the macroscopic plastic behavior of two-dimensional random fiber networks such as strong-bonded paper. Remote load is a pure macroscopic mode I opening field, applied via a boundary layer assuming small scale yielding on the macroscopic scale. It is shown that using a macroscopic classical homogeneous continuum approach to describe plasticity effects due to (macroscopic) singular-dominated strain fields in planar fiber networks leads to erroneous results. The classical continuum description is too simple to capture the essential mechanical behavior of a network material since a structural effect, that alters the macroscopic stress field, becomes pronounced and introduces long-ranging microstructural effects that have to be accounted for. Because of this, it is necessary to include a nonlocal theory that bridges the gap between microscopic and macroscopic scales to describe the material response in homogeneous continuum models. An implicit stress gradient small deformation plasticity model, which is based on a strong nonlocal continuum formulation, is presented here that has the potential to describe the plasticity behavior of fiber networks on a macroscopic scale. The theory is derived by including nonlocal stress terms in the classical associated J2-theory of plasticity. The nonlocal stress tensor is found by scaling the local Cauchy stress tensor by the ratio of nonlocal and local von Mises equivalent stresses. The model is relatively easy to implement in ordinary finite element algorithms for small deformation theory. Fairly good agreements are obtained between discrete micromechanical network models and the derived homogeneous nonlocal continuum model.

Innovation Capability in Project-based Organisations: Development and Validation of a Holistic Innovation Capability Assessment Framework (HICAF)2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Innovation is one of the most important factors behind today´s global economic growth and prosperity. In the current economic climate, increasing global competition and rapidly changing environment, an organisations ability to innovate is regarded as a key factor for success. It is widely accepted that creating new processes, products and procedures are vital for productivity and growth in all sectors. The literature on innovation measurements areas and utilities is voluminous and diverse. Assessing and measuring the complex conditions that influence a firm’s innovation capability is a challenging task, due to the inconsistency, inaccessibility, and complexity of measures. An integrative and holistic innovation capability assessment framework should include all aspects of innovation. This study attempt to address this gap, the lack of a holistic innovation capability assessment framework (HICAF) in project-based firms, by (a) reviewing the literature on innovation, innovation assessment, and measurement areas (b) through a qualitative case study exploring the factors promoting innovation in project-based firms (c) integrating the findings into a holistic assessment framework (d) generating items, in form of a statement, to address the underlying construct of each identified factor (e) applying the proposed framework within an organisation and statistically validating the instrument to achieve item homogeneity. Internal consistency reliability estimates have been utilized to produce a final framework consisting of 57 statistically validated items and eight theoretically grounded categories with 19 corresponding factors promoting innovation, also called enablers, in technology-orientated project-based organisations. In addition to the identified literature findings, the case study resulted in two new enablers, time management, and quality, which are not necessarily specific for project-based organisations, rather specific for the observed organisation. The performed case study is insufficient for determining whether there are any specific enablers for project-based organisations. The advantages of HICAF lies in its simplicity due to practical applicability in a large scale and facilitates managers to diagnose the organisation and recognize true symptoms to then apply appropriate treatment and remedies. A frequent application of HICAF can also help to study the effect of specific treatment and remedies in relation to innovation capability.

Risker vid industriell fordonstvätt: En studie om risker och riskuppfattning vid industriell fordonstvätt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Risk is a phenomenon that exist around us and affect us on a daily basis, in one way or another. Hence, it is important to try to make companies constant well-aware of risks. Companies must have a comprehension about occurrence in the area because it is important to ensure the risk that may arise in the industrial vehicle washing. Further, it is important to pay attention to risks that may arise in the industrial vehicle washing. Also, what type of risks the company are highlighted and structured by the employees and if the company’s risk management can be improved and how. The use of the social constructivist perspective has given an understanding of how individuals persuade the risks and why individuals have different perceptions of what is defined as a risk and what is significant about the risk. In industrial vehicle washing, there are many risks that may arise, for example, dying, explosion, fire and fall. The interviews showed that the staff from different departments in a company has different perception of a risk. Why they have other perception of a risk could be because the staff have different tasks, different departments and a lack of documentation of what a risk is. The best way to eliminate the lack of communication, documentation, risk and time is to hire a security manager. The Security managers task is to create a documentation of risks and risk management.  Further, the task is also to create a common understanding of how risks should be interpreted and perform risk analysis for different parts of the company. This way may create a view about what is happening in the company’s aria and also give the company’s nearby an understanding of what is pursued.

Konstruktionsförslag för lastanordning till likbil2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Slutligen renderades konstruktionsunderlaget i programmet KeyShot.

Komparativ Beslutningsanalyse: En komparativ analyse av en organisasjons beslutninger i to land med lik historie og kultur2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Decisions and decision-making are a major part of any organization   today. New technology and less cultural boundaries have grown new competence and knowledge into organizations. As a direct consequence of knowledge and technology, new opportunities to establish new operations in other markets and countries have become more realistic than before.

It has previously been researched how different cultures and backgrounds may affect an organisation's decision process. The researchers have studied the difference in culture, history and environment and how that affects decision-making.  The purpose of this report is to provide an analysis of an organisation's decision-making process between two countries that are very close in culture, heritage and social behaviour. The research is done within five categories within decision theory; Clear Objectives, Procedural Rationality, Communication, Management Inclusion and how an organizational makes decisions and assign resources. The study has been conducted at Knowit in Sundsvall, Sweden, and with the same organisation in Oslo, Norway.

Data has been collected through interviews, surveys and observations. The outcome of the survey shows that there are both similarities and differences between the organisations in Sweden and Norway in all decision categories. Sweden has clear targets and defined purpose from the beginning of the decision-making process. In Norway, management includes employees in more of the decision-making processes than what Sweden's leaders do. Both countries use communication channels that work for both co-workers and managers. It has been stated by Knowit Sweden and Norway that the organization takes democratic decisions, but this is reflected more in Norway than what it is in Sweden.

Det gerade hörnet2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Källsortering av matavfall i Skellefteå- en fallstudie2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Skellefteå municipality began in 2005 with source separation of food waste they have on two occasions since then had picking analyses done to see how carefully people sort their waste. They saw that the separate fraction of food waste was good but in the combustible, there were still food wastes left. This needed to be improved. This essay examines how the source separation has developed and what information inhabit-ants have received and also how other municipalities are working with this. What conclusions can be drawn from this and what can we do to improve source separation of the food waste?Information has been collected from Skellefteå municipality and three other municipalities have been asked how they work with source separation of food waste. In addition, literature studies of how people change their habits have been done.It has been shown that there is a major change in habits to sort out food waste, the difficulty lies in maintaining source separation until it has become the norm. The paper contains specific proposals on how to improve that´s considered being the problems with source separation and ideas on how the interest in separating food waste can be improved.

Børje Mogensen soffa: Uträkning av dunplymåer och dess planering2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
