Effects of a Recovery-Focused Intervention for Stress Management: A Randomized Controlled Trial2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

    INTRODUCTION

Stress symptoms, burnout, poor mental health and long-term sick leave related to these are major problems in Sweden and elsewhere. Evidence-based prevention and treatment efforts are lacking. Research indicates that stress related health problems primarily could be conceptualized as deficiencies in recovery responses between stress periods rather than high level of stress responses per se. Therefore it is relevant to examine whether it is effective to intervene the recovery behavior – instead of the stress behavior - of people with stress symptoms.

    OBJECTIVES

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate if a behavioral oriented recovery management intervention could enhance “recovery behaviors” and experiences of recovery and reduce stress related ill health.

METHODS A group based intervention program focusing exclusively on “recovery behavior” in everyday life (earlier developed and tested in two pilot studies) was evaluated in an experimental group study. The intervention consisted of seven group sessions of 2.5 hours over a period of approximately 10 weeks supplemented by an internet based treatment support system. Self- referred subjects with scores above 24.4 on the Perceived stress scale were randomized to the intervention (n=26) or a waiting-list (n=33).

    RESUL T

Statistically significant and clinically relevant effects were achieved for the intervention group compare to the waiting-list group: recovery behaviors and experiences of recovery were increased, and levels of perceived stress, worry, anxiety, depression and exhaustion were decreased.

DISCUSSION These results are in line with two previous pilot studies that we have done. A behavioral and recovery oriented intervention seems to be effective to increase the recovery of the individual and decrease stress related ill health. There are reasons to continue to explore the potential of recovery-oriented interventions for example for different populations (such as people with more extensive clinical health problems) and in different contexts.

    Stress-Recovery Management: A Pilot Study Using a Single-Subject Experimental Design2019In: Behavior modification, ISSN 0145-4455, E-ISSN 1552-4167Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Work-related stress is considered one of the biggest health and safety challenges among the member states of the European Union. A critical factor is recovery between periods of stress. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate whether a brief behaviorally oriented stress-recovery management intervention delivered in an individual setting could reduce stress symptoms among individuals with high levels of perceived stress. A single-subject experimental design with multiple baselines across three individuals was used. The results indicate, with at least moderate experimental control, a temporal relation between the start of the intervention and beneficial changes from baseline in continuous self-recordings of stress symptoms. The changes were maintained at 1-year and 5-year follow-up assessments. Also, self-reporting inventories measuring perceived stress, worry, anxiety, depression, burnout, type A behavior, unwinding and recuperation from work stress, and insomnia showed overall changes in beneficial directions at post-assessment, as well as the two follow-up assessments. The results indicate that a behaviorally oriented stress-recovery management intervention delivered in an individual setting can reduce stress symptoms in individuals with high levels of perceived stress. However, for firm conclusions to be drawn, further research is needed.

The reliability and factorial validity of the Swedish version of the Recovery Experience Questionnaire2018In: Nordic Psychology, ISSN 1901-2276, E-ISSN 1904-0016, Vol. 70, no 4, p. 324-333Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recent research has indicated that recovery from work stress and effort might be crucial for health and well-being. Thus, a valid measurement of recovery becomes important. The main purpose of the present study was to empirically evaluate and seeking support for the hypothesized four-factor model of the Swedish version of Recovery Experience Questionnaire (REQ). The total sample (N = 680) was randomly split into two subsamples. The first subsample was used for finding the best-fitting model using an exploratory factor analysis and the second subsample was used to test the a priori model using confirmatory factor analysis. The results support the proposed four-factor structure of the scale for both males and females. Additionally, apart from high reliability estimates, this instrument proved to have good convergent and discriminant validity for all four factors. Implications for the use of the REQ in conjunction with recovery-focused interventions were discussed, as were limitations such as low response rate.

Medborgarlön: En argumentationsanalys av debatten i ETC och Dagens Arena2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Enabling communication between Wireless Sensor Networks and The Internet-of-Things: A CoAP communication stack2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis focuses on enabling the communication between Wireless Sensor Networks and Internet-of-Things applications.  In order to achieve this goal, the first step has been to investigate the concept of the Internet-of-Things and then to understand how this scenario could be used to interconnect multiple Wireless Sensor Networks in order to develop context-aware applications which could handle sensor data coming from this type of network.

The second step was to design and implement a communication stack which enabled Wireless Sensor Networks to communicate with an Internet-of-Things platform. The CoAP protocol has been used as application protocol for the communication with the Wireless Sensor Networks. The solution has been developed in Java programming language and extended the sensor and actuator layer of the Sensible Things platform.

The third step of this thesis has been to investigate in which real world applications the developed solution could have been used. Next a Proof of Concept application has been implemented in order to simulate a simple fire detection system, where multiple Wireless Sensor Networks collaborate to send their temperature data to a control center. The last step was to evaluate the whole system, specifically the responsiveness and the overhead introduced by the developed communication stack.

1,135 Genomes Reveal the Global Pattern of Polymorphism in Arabidopsis thaliana2016In: Cell, ISSN 0092-8674, E-ISSN 1097-4172, Vol. 166, no 2, p. 481-491Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Arabidopsis thaliana serves as a model organism for the study of fundamental physiological, cellular, and molecular processes. It has also greatly advanced our understanding of intraspecific genome variation. We present a detailed map of variation in 1,135 high-quality re-sequenced natural inbred lines representing the native Eurasian and North African range and recently colonized North America. We identify relict populations that continue to inhabit ancestral habitats, primarily in the Iberian Peninsula. They have mixed with a lineage that has spread to northern latitudes from an unknown glacial refugium and is now found in a much broader spectrum of habitats. Insights into the history of the species and the fine-scale distribution of genetic diversity provide the basis for full exploitation of A. thaliana natural variation through integration of genomes and epigenomes with molecular and non-molecular phenotypes.

Evaluating Coverage Effectiveness of Multi-Camera Domes Placement for Volumetric Surveillance2017In: ICDSC 2017 Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras, New York, NY, USA: Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2017, Vol. F132201, p. 49-54Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Multi-camera dome is composed of a number of cameras arranged to monitor a half sphere of the sky. Designing a network of multi-camera domes can be used to monitor flying activities in open large area, such as birds' activities in wind parks. In this paper, we present a method for evaluating the coverage effectiveness of the multi-camera domes placement in such areas. We used GPS trajectories of free flying birds over an area of 9 km2 to analyze coverage effectiveness of randomly placed domes. The analysis is based on three criteria namely, detection, positioning and the maximum resolution captured. The developed method can be used to evaluate results of designing and optimizing dome placement algorithms for volumetric monitoring systems in order to achieve maximum coverage.

Full Coverage Optimization for Multi Camera Dome Placement in Volumetric Monitoring2018In: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, New York, NY, USA: ACM Digital Library, 2018, article id Article No. 2Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Volumetric monitoring can be challenging due to having a 3D target space and moving objects within it. Multi camera dome is proposed to provide a hemispherical coverage of the 3D space around it. This paper introduces a method that optimizes multi camera placement for full coverage in volumetric monitoring system. Camera dome placement is modeled in a volume by adapting the hexagonal packing of circles to provide full coverage at a given height, and 100% detection of flying objects within it. The coverage effectiveness of different placement configurations was assessed using an evaluation environment. The proposed placement is applicable in designing and deploying surveillance systems for remote outdoor areas, such as sky monitoring in wind farms and airport runways in order to record and analyze flying activities.

Design Exploration of Multi-Camera Dome2019Conference proceedings (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Visual monitoring systems employ distributed smart cameras toeffectively cover a given area satisfying specific objectives. Thechoice of camera sensors and lenses and their deployment affectsdesign cost, accuracy of the monitoring system and the ability toposition objects within the monitored area. Design cost can bereduced by investigating deployment topology such as groupingcameras together to form a dome at a node and optimize it formonitoring constraints. The constraints may include coverage area, number of cameras that can be integrated in a node and pixelresolution at a given distance. This paper presents a method foroptimizing the design cost of multi-camera dome by analyzing tradeoffsbetween monitoring constraints. The proposed method can beused to reduce monitoring cost while fulfilling design objectives. Results show how to increase coverage area for a given cost byrelaxing requirements on design constraints. Multi-camera domescan be used in sky monitoring applications such as monitoring windparks and remote air-traffic control of airports where all-round fieldof view about a point is required to monitor.

    Abstract [en]

Adolescents in the industrial world are becoming less physically active and are increasingly adopting a sedentary life-style in front of computers and television screens. OBJECTIVE: to determine self-related health, physical activity, sleeping habits, prevalence of overweight, and body complaints in Australian senior high school students. METHODS: Participants were 466 high school students aged 15-17 years enrolled in academic and vocational programs. A questionnaire was completed at two senior high schools with questions about weight and height, health, physical activity, type of physical activity/sport, intensity, sleeping habits, and possible injuries or complaints during the last three months. RESULTS: Seventy seven percent of the high school students participated in sports on a regular basis. Compared with vocational programs, more males and females in academic programs participated in sports (71% and 80% respectively) (p = .036). Males reported significantly better health than females (p < .0001). 65% of the study group reported body complaints during the last 3 months. A higher number of females than males reported complaints about the back (p = .007) and the hip (p = .05). Good sleep was reported in 82.1% of males and in 76.6% of females. In males, 44.3% were often sleepy in the daytime (females 56.6%, p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Underweight, physical activity and good sleep are factors with significant positive effect on good health, whereas overweight is a negative factor. Proper sleep habits and higher physical activity levels should be promoted among high school students, and TV viewing time and video game use restricted. Additionally, schools should provide opportunities for young people to participate in a wider range of physical activities that address their individual needs while promoting the health benefits of engaging in regular exercise.

Mobility, muscular strength and endurance in the cervical spine in Swedish air force pilots2001In: Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine, ISSN 0095-6562, Vol. 72, no 4, p. 336-342Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

PURPOSE: Muscle strength, endurance and range of movement of the cervical spine in a group of Swedish Air Force jet pilots (AF) and in a reference group of conscripts doing their military service (RG) were compared. METHODS: We tested 30 (AF) 24-42 yr and 33 (RG) 19-22 yr. A questionnaire was used to document complaints. Maximum voluntary isometric muscle strength of the flexor and extensor muscles of the cervical spine and sub-maximum isometric endurance in the flexor and extensor muscles were measured. RESULTS: Eleven AF (37%) and four RG (12%) had experienced discomfort in the neck within the previous year. The pilots' flexor and extensor muscle strength (47 Nm and 65 Nm) was superior to that of the conscripts (36 Nm and 59 Nm) (p = 0.0001, p = < 0.05, respectively). However, the RG group had greater isometric endurance in the flexor muscles than AF (p = < 0.05) and greater neck rotation (p = <0.005). There was no difference between the two groups in the other variables. CONCLUSION: Differences between the groups with regard to muscle strength and endurance might depend on variations in work-related physical muscle strain, and/or differences in fiber composition in the muscles, which might be reflected by pilot selection procedures.

Reliability of sports related functional tests with emphasis on speed and agility in young athletes.2001In: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, ISSN 0905-7188, Vol. 11, no 4, p. 229-232Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present investigation was to test the reliability of two sports related functional tests, a speed test (slalom-test) and an agility test (hurdle-test). Eleven athletes aged 11 years (8 boys, 3 girls) participated voluntarily in the study. All subjects completed four different test sessions for both the slalom-test and the hurdle-test using six standard track hurdles placed at 2-m intervals along a 12-m length of track. There were no significant differences between testing sessions for either the slalom-test (P=0.99) or the hurdle-test (P=0.96), showing no systematic variation between test times. The intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.96 and 0.90 respectively, indicating a good reliability. We conclude that the slalom-test and the hurdle-test are reliable sports related functional tests for measuring speed and agility in groups of young athletic individuals.

AIM: Children and adolescents in the industrial world are becoming less

physically active and are adopting a sedentary lifestyle in front of computers

and TV. The aim of the present investigation was to determine self-related

health, physical activity, prevalence of overweight and body complaints in

high school students in Norway, and to compare students in academic

programs with those in vocational programs. METHODS: Seven hundred and

two high school students aged 16-19 years were included in the study. A

questionnaire was completed in three high schools and included questions

about weight and height, health, physical activity, type of physical

activity/sport, intensity, possible injuries or complaints during the last three

months. RESULTS: Twenty three percent of the students suffers from

overweight/obesity are at risk of being overweight. Males reported better

health than females (P<0.02). Sixty-six percent of the study group reported

body complaints during the last three months, a higher number of females

than males (P=0.001). Students in vocational programs reported poorer selfrelated

health than those in academic programs and the males reported

better self-related health generally than females. Furthermore, there were a

higher level of prevalence of overweight students in vocational programs

than academic programs (P=0.039). CONCLUSION: It is important to make it

easy for school children and adolescents to do physical activity at school and

during leisure time in order to prevent overweight and obesity as well as

    chronic diseases later in life.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this investigation was to study self-related health, physical activity and level of exertion, as well as body complaints in Swedish high school students. A total of 993 high school students aged 16–19 years participated in the study. A questionnaire was completed at school and included questions about self-related health, physical activity behavior, type of physical activity/sport, intensity, duration, possible injuries or complaints, and absence from physical training at school, during the last 3 months. The results showed that 26% of the high school students participated in sports on a regular basis. Males reported significantly better health than females (p < 0.0005). A significantly higher number of females participated in physical activities at a lower level of effort (p < 0.0005) and a higher number of males trained at a higher level of effort (p < 0.005). Sixty-one percent reported body pain during the last 3 months, representing a higher number of females than males (p = 0.03). A higher number of females than males reported complaints from the back (p = 0.002), the knees (p = 0.015), the neck (p = 0.001), and the hip (p = 0.015). Females with body complaints reported poorer health than those without complaints. There was a correlation between poor self-related health and a lower level of physical effort (0.219; p < 0.001). The results showed that the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms was high in this population and demonstrated a certain association with self-related health. Therefore, it is important to make it easy for adolescents to perform physical activity at school and during their leisure time in order to prevent chronic diseases.

Physical activity and health among adolescents with cerebral palsy in Sweden2009In: International journal of adolescent medicine and health, ISSN 0334-0139, Vol. 21, no 4, p. 623-633Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common disorder of movement and posture in children. The disorder results from a non-progressive brain lesion occurring in the fetal or infant brain. Children with CP have challenges with movement, posture, and mobility that last a life time. Few studies describe physical activity and health among adolescents with CP. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe self-related health, physical activity, and body complaints among adolescents with CP in Sweden. Methods: A questionnaire was answered by 64 adolescents with CP, with 143 adolescents without disabilities serving as controls. Results: Adolescents with CP reported their general health to be better than adolescents without disabilities (p = .001). Adolescents with CP participated less than adolescents without disabilities in sport during recreation time (p = .009). About 19% of adolescents with CP were never or seldom physically active, compared with 8% in the control group (p = .025). A total of 50% of adolescents with CP reported musculoskeletal complaints during the last three months, compared with 69.5% in the control group. There was a correlation between musculoskeletal complaints and self-related health in adolescents with CP (p = .015) but not in the controls. Conclusion: Adolescents with CP reported their general health to be good. Adolescents with CP were less physically active than adolescents without disabilities. There was a correlation between musculoskeletal complaints and self-related health among adolescents with CP. Further research is needed to determine the cause of the low physical activity among adolescents with CP and also to determine the relationship between musculoskeletal complaints and physical activity.

Back to work - evaluation of multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme with emphasis on musculoskeletal disorders. A two year follow-up2007In: International Journal of Rehabilitation Research, ISSN 0342-5282, E-ISSN 1473-5660, Vol. 30, no 1, p. 35-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the 2-year outcome of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme for working-age people, regarding sick leave and mental health. Method. The test persons consisted of 40 women and 20 men (mean age 46.8 +/- SD 7.9) with musculoskeletal disorders, mainly neck and back pain. The rehabilitation programme was individually adapted and consisted of physical activity in several forms, relaxation, theoretical and practical education and individual guidance. Before, during and after the programme all participants were evaluated with the Global Self-Efficacy Index, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and stress test. Results. At the 2-year follow-up full-time sick leave had decreased by 37% (p < 0.0001) in the women, and by 25% (p < 0.05) in the men. Both women and men showed an increased quality of life (QoL) and decreased anxiety, depression and self-experienced stress at the 2-year follow-up compared with the start of the rehabilitation programme. Conclusions. The most important conclusion was that the effects of the rehabilitation programme persisted for up to 2 years. At 2 years the majority of the participants were still physically active, their QoL was increased, and most participants had returned to work.

Self-reported health, physical activity and prevalence of complaints in elite cross-country skiers and matched controls2005In: Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, ISSN 0022-4707, E-ISSN 1827-1928, Vol. 45, no 4, p. 547-552Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim. The purpose of this study was to compare physical health, physical activity and location for possible symptoms in high school students with cross-country skiers of the same age from ski high schools. Another aim was to study back pain with regards to influence on skiing.Methods. The subjects studied were: 92% (n=120) of all Swedish cross-country skiers at ski high schools and 68% (n=993) of regular high school students from the North part of Sweden answered a reliable questionnaire (r=1) with regards to health, physical activity and location of possible symptoms/injuries during the last 3 months. Furthermore, the skiers answered questions on possible ski related back pain.Results. All skiers were active also in other sports compared with 26% of the controls and at considerably higher levels of physical effort than the controls; 92% of the skiers and 76% of the controls described themselves as healthy, meaning "very good" or "good" (P=0.0001); 55% of the skiers and 64% of the controls reported recent symptoms (P=0.06); 47% of the skiers reported previous or present complaints of back pain, mainly low back pain, which could be relieved by changing body position from a flexed to a more extended one while skiing, and 77% reported their back pain to disappear during rest.Conclusion. These results show the need for encouraging regular high school students to participate in sport. It also shows the importance of introducing preventative strategies regarding back pain to long-distance cross-country skiers, who are exposed to a prolonged flexed position of their back.

    Abstract [en]

Objectives To evaluate possible changes in spinal curvature over a period of 5 years of an elite cross-country skiing squad, and to study whether there are any differences in this respect between individuals who report low back pain and those how do not. Participants Fifteen young cross-country skiers (M age=13.6±0.9) participated voluntarily throughout the entire study period. Main outcome measures Debrunner's kyphometer was used for measuring the difference between thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis of the spine. All subjects also answered a questionnaire including questions about ski-related low back pain, the amount of ski training, and participation in other sports. Results The results at the end of the 5-year period comprise data from 15 skiers (M age=18.5±0.9 years). The relationship between thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis increased from 3.5° to 13.1°, respectively (p=0.0001). Of the 15 elite cross-country skiers, seven reported low back pain at the 5-year examination. At the 5-year follow-up, skiers with low back pain showed significantly higher relationship between thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis than did those skiers without low back pain, 18.2° and 10.5°, respectively (p=0.035). Of the eight elite cross-country skiers without low back pain, seven were also involved in other sports (p=0.005). Conclusions Based on these findings, our advice is that adolescent cross-country skiers also should participate in other physical activities besides cross-country skiing.

    Abstract [en]

Companies’ efforts to organize their risk management have become increasingly important and there are several systems that boards have to choose from to createstructure around the companies’ internal control and risk management. The aim of this study was to identify which framework for internal control and risk management that listed Swedish companies follow and what effects the choice have on the companies. This study was conducted based on three models: COSO's framework model for ERM,COSO's framework model for internal control and the Swedish Code of Corporate Governance. COSO's ERM model is considered the most comprehensive of theseframeworks in the accounts of a company's internal control and risk management. The requirements from the Swedish Code of Corporate Governance on the other hand areconsidered the least precise and comprehensive. A company’s choice of framework according to previous research affects among other things the assurance of a company's stakeholders and as a result it’s cost of capital. Some common factors in the choice of framework among the surveyed companies were mapped. Based on the purpose of this study and previous research the following variables was selected: average cost of capital, presence of risk manager, board independence ratio and industry affiliation. The study covered 54 companies listed on Large Cap and empirical data was collected mainly from the companies’ annual reportsfrom 2012. Results from the survey showed that the framework for internal control wasthe most applied among the surveyed companies, while the ERM framework was the least applied. The companies applying the ERM framework had the lowest cost of capital, while companies applying the Swedish Code of Corporate Governance had the highest cost of capital. The industrial sector is the most common segment among the companies applying the ERM framework. Risk Manager proved to be most prevalent among the companies applying the ERM model. Regarding the boards independence degree companies applying the framework for internal control has the highest independent degree.

    Abstract [en]

Participation is an important aspect when it comes to continuous improvements. Participation increases quality and creates support among employees and is a tool for achieving successful quality work. Companies need prerequisites for creating participation, and in successful companies this success is characterized by the creation of participation and motivation among employees. The aim of the study was to describe how production supervisors create opportunities for participation in improvement processes. The method used was a qualitative inductive approach from a life-world perspective. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight production supervisors and qualitative content analysis was used to examine texts to find sentence entetities and categories. Fishbone diagrams were created as a complement to the interviews. The results and the analysis indicated two categories, prerequisites and limitations to create participation in improvement work. This showed that there are difficulties when it comes to interpreting the term participation and even more difficult to specify the tools inuse. In the future it is of great importance to ensure that the research around the creation of participation is in focus.

Det systematiska utförandet av omplacering av ensamkommande barn: En kvalitativ intervjuanalys2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

One of the most important issues that often appears on the political agenda is the difference between natives and the foreign born in labor market integration. A big difference between these groups would imply worse chances for foreigners of getting work, which can then create problems with implementing labor market policies. However, there is no simple answer to what explains the low labor market integration. Previous research is partly agreed that residential segregation is relevant. On the other hand, there is a disagreement about the way in which it affects the labor market. Moreover, there is an uncertainty about the relevance of socio-economic factors. This study therefore attempts to supplement previous knowledge by studying the impact of residential segregation, but also the effect of the welfare dependency that may have a greater impact on the labor market, as this may mean a habit of not working. This is studied by examining the 100 largest municipalities in Sweden through multiple regressions. The result showed that both residential segregation and welfare dependency has a connection with low labor market integration. Welfare dependency also showed the connection between residential segregation and labor market integration became less strong. Further studies therefore need to examine this variable more thoroughly to determine if this variable causes higher unemployment rates in the labor market. In conclusion, the results of this study can be referred to policies that focus on improving the structural conditions in the municipality by distributing and disposing of social / economic resources in society more fairly among the citizens.

Sjukskoterskans beslutsfattande vid prioritering av patienter paakutmottagning: -En litteraturoversikt2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

kunde delas in i två huvudteman: individuella- och organisatoriska faktorer.
