Structural Biases in British and Swedish Election News Coverage2007In: Journalism Studies, ISSN 1461-670X, E-ISSN 1469-9699, Vol. 8, no 5, p. 798-812Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Election campaigns in advanced democracies are highly mediated events. Thus, the electorate has come to depend upon the media for information regarding the election, the parties and their policies. At the same time, research indicates that the news coverage of elections tends to be structurally biased, in the sense that the media coverage is episodic rather than thematic and that it is focused on the horse race and the political strategies of the competing parties rather than on the issues at stake. However, comparative studies of election news coverage in different countries are still somewhat lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the election news coverage in Britain and Sweden, two countries that are part of different models of media and political systems. The study investigates the election news coverage in two major broadsheets and one major tabloid in each country, during the last three weeks before the Swedish Election in 2002 and the British Election in 2005. The results show several significant differences between the Swedish and the British election news coverage.

From Automatic Data Processing to Digitalization: What is Past is Prologue2019In: Electronic Government: 18th IFIP WG 8.5 International Conference, EGOV 2019, San Benedetto Del Tronto, Italy, September 2–4, 2019, Proceedings / [ed] Ida Lindgren, Marijn Janssen, Habin Lee, Andrea Polini, Manuel Pedro, Rodríguez Bolívar, Hans Jochen Scholl, Efthimios Tambouris, 2019, p. 31-42Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Governments across the world are intensifying their use of digital technology. One way to generate an understanding of the effects of technology in the public sector is to study values. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how values in the Swedish national e-Government have developed over time. This research studies Swedish government documents between 1961 and 2018 during three periods of computerization: Automatic Data Processing, Information Technology, and Digitalization. A theoretical framework that consists of four value positions (i.e. professionalism, efficiency, service, and engagement) is utilized. The findings suggest that technological paradigms tend to generate value congruence in policy documents, followed by value divergence in evaluations. Currently, digitalization is perceived as the enabler of several values. While both IT and digitalization are referred to as tools or means, the development towards an information, knowledge, or data-driven society is also described as inevitable. The service ideal became dominant through the use of internet-based technology, while efficiency is often prioritized in large-scale projects. Engagement values are associated with a futuristic form of democracy in government documents, but rarely converted into practice. The role of professionalism is two-fold: it acts both as an enabler and as a constraint to the other values. The paper concludes with suggesting that the current development of adapting laws and regulations to enable digitalization might lead to an eroded bureaucracy, with uncertain value.

If Digitalization is the Solution, What is the Problem?2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A range of policies on different levels of government (including EU, national, regional and local) concerns the use of digital technology. Drawing upon prior research that suggests that many e-Government policies contain myths and visionary images about technology, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the discourse on digitalization through an analysis of a Swedish digitalization policy. The research utilized a theoretical framework which describes four views on technology. The methodology used was interpretative, based on a "What’s the problem represented to be?" (WPR) approach. The findings suggest that the discourse on digitalization in the policy shifts between describing a serving, and a dictating technology. Digitalization is presented as a solution to external problems, based on the condition that we adapt to a future, data-driven society. The policy remains silent about groups and individuals that do not want take part in the digital society, since the proposed solution is that everyone should embrace the technology. The paper concludes with suggestions of alternative perspectives on technology. As such, this paper contributes to the current literature with critical reflections of how technology is represented in a digitalization policy.

Vindkraftverks effekter på turism i fjällmiljö: Fokus på vindkraftparken på Glötesvålen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Trade-offs in the district heat distribution system2011In: What is Sustainable Technology?: Perceptions, Paradoxes and Possibilites / [ed] Karel Mulder, Didac Ferrer and Harro van Lente, Sheffield, UK: Greenleaf Publishing Ltd, 2011, p. 87-107Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

District heating has the potential to provide consumers with heat using resources that would otherwise be wasted (e.g. surplus heat from industry) or increase overall efficiency by generating both heat and electricity. However, the introduction and utilisation of district heating has to be performed in a responsible way in order to benefit all the different stakeholders involved. A positive outcome depends on local preconditions and the identification of trade-offs involving different environmental, social and economic considerations. In the history of district heating, several illustrative articulations of sustainability can be found, and situations in which different trade-offs have become clear.

This chapter will discuss some articulations of sustainability and the environmental, social and economic trade-offs that can be identified for district heat distribution systems, to help achieve a deeper understanding of sustainability considerations and trade-offs for technical systems in general. Examples from research on district heating, carried out at Chalmers University of Technology from 1991 until today, will be used to illustrate real-world dilemmas.

Adolescent’s level of knowledge of and supportive attitudes to sexual crime in the Swedish context2019In: Journal of Sexual Aggression, ISSN 1355-2600, E-ISSN 1742-6545, Vol. 25, no 2, p. 75-89Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study was twofold. First, we wanted to quantify the level of knowledge of Swedish young people regarding sexual crime and to evaluate their supportive attitudes, while at the same time we aimed at identifying, through self-report, the sources that most contribute to such knowledge and attitudes. A sample of 245 upper secondary school students was selected from five schools in four Swedish counties. The results indicate that adolescents in Sweden have a high level of knowledge of rape, sexual molestation/harassment, and sexual exploitation of a dependent person. Furthermore, they show non-supportive attitudes to rape, sexual harassment, and sexual crime in general. However, some issues related to these types of crime proved to be confusing to the participants and, therefore, require targeting in education policies, specifically among juvenile males and those born abroad. The results are discussed in the context of the needs for sexual crime prevention.

Evenemangsturism: - En studie om besökarupplevelser2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Alpina VM, besökarbehov, evenemang, evenemangsturism, Skidskytte-VM, upplevelsefaktorer.

Developing edu-tourism in an urban indigenous community: The case of Aldeia Bananal (Brasília - DF - Brazil)2018In: International Journal of Tourism Anthropology, ISSN 1759-0442, E-ISSN 1759-0450, Vol. 6, no 2, p. 133-153Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The indigenous tourism project developed at Aldeia Bananal, a community located in Brasília, Brazil, and composed of three ethnic Indian groups - Kariri-Xokó, Tuxá and Fulni-ô - was combined with educational tourism by bringing tourism graduation students to visit the community. The theory is mainly based on the concepts of staged authenticity for community empowerment, geotourism and ambience generation. It was applied the ethnographic method, which aimed at preparing and evaluating the visit in an indigenous context. Some conclusions taken for the community side were that they were at all times very positive towards the research; they spread their culture in a tense political moment - due to the pressure of real estate capital - and enhanced their cultural heritage, although not so much the environmental aspect. For the students the project created a unique contact with the indigenous group which led to a higher knowledge and valorisation of their culture.

    Abstract [sv]

Evaluating the social impacts of events: in search of unified indicators for effective policymaking2018In: Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events, ISSN 1940-7963, E-ISSN 1940-7971Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Policymakers in destinations regularly struggle to identify effective ways to evaluate the impacts of planned events. Especially problematic is the relative lack of knowledge about the social impacts that planned events incur. This challenge is largely attributable to the historic focus on economic impacts. However, this trend is shifting along with the realization that events often fail to deliver on promised economic trickle-down effects. This paper addresses the absence of a unified view on social impacts, and how this impedes destinations that aspire to work strategically with planned events. Policymakers at the destination level currently lack the common language needed to effectively measure these impacts. We use a Delphi approach to pinpoint social impact indicators that are of use in policy settings. The results show six indicators that meet the study criteria, thereby contributing towards a unified set of indicators for dealing with strategic event management at the destination level.

    Abstract [en]

Case-studies of whether and how heritage can be used to bring about reconciliation. This volume explores one of the most critical issues of our time: whether heritage can contribute to a more peaceful society and future. It reflects a core belief that heritage can provide solutions to reconciling peoples and demonstrates the amount of significant work being carried out internationally. Based round the core themes of new and emerging ideas around heritage and peace, heritage and peace-building in practice, and heritage, peace-building and sites, the twenty contributions seek to raise perceptions and understanding of heritage-based peace-building practices. Responding to the emphasis placed on conflict, war and memorialization, they reflect exploratory yet significant steps towards reclaiming the history, theory, and practice of peacebuilding as serious issues for heritage in contemporary society. The geographical scope of the book includes contributions from Europe, notably the Balkans and Northern Ireland, the Middle East, and Kenya. Diana Walters is an International Heritage Consultant and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter; Daniel Laven is Associate Professor of Human Geography, Department of Tourism Studies and Geography/European Tourism Research Institute (ETOUR), Mid Sweden University; Peter Davis is Emeritus Professor of Museology, Newcastle University. Digital Toolbox:: Innovation for Nordic Tourism SMEs2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This project consisted of 6 Nordic partners (collaborations between academic institutions and business clusters from the Nordic countries), and focused on identifying and developing ICT tools for innovation in Nordic tourism small businesses and destinations.Meeting the practical needs of tourism businesses in the Nordic countries when adopting and employing ICT in their operations has been the focus of the study. Taking into account the structure and challenges of the tourism industry in the Nordic region, the different case studies in this report represents different approaches to efficient use of ICT, offering a toolbox consisting of suggestions on how to take advantage of ICT for market communication, customer knowledge, service design and innovation. The seven tools in the digital toolbox developed, are a mobile app, a service design toolkit, a customer knowledge tool, a website analysis toolkit, a user generated content sentiment analysis tool, a methodology for open innovation and a digital marketing tool.

The entrepreneur–opportunity nexus: discovering the forces that promote product innovations in rural micro-tourism firms2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, ISSN 1502-2250, E-ISSN 1502-2269, Vol. 19, no 1, p. 47-65Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate what sets in motion the process that results in product innovations in rural micro-tourism firms. The point of departure is to place entrepreneurship as a process that precedes innovations. This approach enables the application of the opportunity-based perspective, on the study of 40 new tourism products. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with owner-managers of micro-tourism firms in rural Sweden. The focus of the analysis is on the formation of the entrepreneur–opportunity nexus. The findings suggest that in forming the nexus, three types of forces are at play: internal, supply chain dynamics and reaction to changes. The notion of triggering forces adds a new dimension to the study of entrepreneurial opportunities. The theoretical contribution of this paper to tourism research is twofold. First, it points at the generating moment as a step towards theorising innovations, and second, the findings contribute to the growing knowledge base about entrepreneurial behaviour in micro-tourism firms in rural areas. Finally, in a practical manner, the findings of this study should encourage tourism entrepreneurs to invest in exploring the value chain, regard tourists as sources of knowledge and be attentive to changes in circumstances.

Hospitality workers and the relational spaces of labor (im)mobility2018In: Tourism Geographies, ISSN 1461-6688, E-ISSN 1470-1340, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 49-66Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Building on the recent interest among labor geographers for workers’ ability to strategize around their mobility, and tourism researchers’ longstanding examination of mobile tourism workers, this paper explores the mobility agency of differently positioned hospitality workers. The findings suggest that workers are not always ‘strategic’ in relation to labor mobility, and that labor mobility and career paths must be recognized as fragmented, happenstance and erratic. Furthermore, this article argues for an approach to the study of mobile tourism workers that takes the relational as well as temporal aspects into account. This endeavor is in particular guided by the notion of stories-so-far and the understanding of people as both being and becoming. The empirical basis of this paper consists of 22 interviews with hospitality workers in four hotel workplaces in Sweden; the luxury city hotel, the suburban chain hotel, the city chain hotel and the seasonal hotel. Ultimately, I suggest that the multifaceted complex of considerations which workers negotiate, could be conceptualized as the relational spaces of labor (im)mobility.
