    Curve-Crossing Analysis for Potential Sputtering of Insulators2000In: Surface Science, ISSN 0039-6028, E-ISSN 1879-2758, Vol. 451, no 1-3, p. 197-202Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We develop a theoretical model for the recently observed threshold for potential sputtering of LiF by slow singly and doubly charged ions. The threshold coincides with the potential energy to create a cold hole in the valence band of LiF by resonant neutralization. We calculate the level shift of the incident ion and the deformation of the valence band under the influence of the projectile. Resonant neutralization becomes possible for ions with recombination energies larger than 10 eV in agreement with the experimental findings.

Vertical incidence of slow Ne10+ ions on an LiF surface: Suppression of the trampoline effect2001In: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, ISSN 0168-583X, E-ISSN 1872-9584, Vol. 182, no 1-4, p. 36-40Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We present a Monte Carlo simulation of the neutralization of a slow Ne10+ ion in vertical incidence on an LiF(100) surface. The rates for resonant electron transfer between surface F- ions and the projectile are calculated using a classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulation. We investigate the influence of the hole mobility on the neutralization sequence. It is shown that backscattering above the surface due to the local positive charge up of the surface ("trampoline effect") does not take place.

    Abstract [en]

Digitization of working methods has led to the possibility of investigating the possibilities for algorithms in a processing platform for power grids. This report presents a needs assessment for a number of algorithms in a processing platform for power grids. The report describes through graphical methods how such algorithms can be constructed, and presents a methodology for interpreting and transforming the raw data from the platform into input data for such algorithms. The algorithms can be used as a basis for decision-making, potentially leading to reduced environmental impact, improved quality, and more sustainable and efficient work processes. Further, a future structure with algebraic graph theory is suggested for the platform.

Evaluation of Internet of Things Communication Protocols Adapted for Secure Transmission in Fog Computing Environments2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A current challenge in the Internet of Things is the seeking after conceptual structures to connect the presumably billions of devices of innumerable forms and capabilities. An emerging architectural concept, the fog cloud computing, moves the seemingly unlimited computational power of the distant cloud to the edge of the network, closer to the potentially computationally limited things, effectively diminishing the experienced latency. To allow computationally-constrained devices partaking in the network they have to be relieved from the burden of constant availability and extensive computational execution. Establishing a publish/subscribe communication pattern with the utilization of the popular Internet of Things application layer protocol Constrained Application Protocol is depicted one approach of overcoming this issue. In this project, a Java based library to establish a publish/subscribe communication pattern for the Constrained Application

Protocol was develop. Furthermore, efforts to build and assess prototypes of several publish/subscribe application layer protocols executed over varying common as well as secured versions of the standard and non-standard transport layer protocols were made to take advantage, evaluate, and compare the developed library. The results indicate that the standard protocol stacks represent solid candidates yet one non-standard protocol stack is the considered prime candidate which still maintains a low response time while not adding a significant amount of communication overhead.

Feasibility and Performance Evaluation of SCTP for the Industrial Internet of Things2017In: Proceedings IECON 2017 - 43RD ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE IEEE INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS SOCIETY, 2017, p. 6101-6106Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The ability to provide a high Quality of Service is a crucial aspect in the acceptance and widespread dispersion of the Industrial Internet of Things and it has a key role to enhance the end user experience. The emerging fog cloud computing architectural concept aims to diminish the experienced latency while simultaneously providing a seemingly unlimited quantity of computational power by moving computations from the cloud and things to the edge. To enhance the reliability, fault-tolerance, and connectivity of the data transmission, the transport layer protocol Stream Control Transport Protocol may be applied. To this end, we analyzed the feasibility of this protocol for an Industrial Internet of Things and fog computing setting by demonstrating and conducting essential network performance measurements. Our results reveal, that the protocol is a valid candidate for industrial scenarios in a fog computing environment and that it outperforms established Internet transport layer protocols in several of the conducted measurements.

Performance Evaluation of Secure CoAP and MQTT Communication on Resource-Constrained Devices2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One important consideration for the Internet of Things is protecting sensitive data communicated from resource-constrained devices. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the Constrained Application Protocol and the Message Queue Telemetry Transport protocol in combination with and without their respective transport layer security. The testbed consisted of Raspberry Pi devices as representatives of resource-constrained devices and the evaluation identified that the processing of certificates and the establishment of a secure connection represents a heavy burden to the devices. Furthermore, the results show varying performances between the protocols when evaluated under lossy network conditions.

Have you been sexually harassed in school?: What female high school students regard as harassment.2005In: International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health, ISSN 0334-0139, Vol. 17, no 4, p. 391-408Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to explore what behaviors experienced from peers and school staff at school are acknowledged as sexual harassment, and perceived as problematic, by female high school students, and what other factors may be relevant. Analyses were performed of responses (to 540 questionnaires) in an anonymous self-report mail survey from a random sample of female Swedish high-school students (59% response rate). Exposure to relevant behaviors, of varying levels of severity, alone, does not explain the acknowledgment of harassment. Many students were subjected to many of the potentially offensive behaviors without labeling them as sexual harassment, despite the fact that they saw many of them as problematic. Further, viewing the relevant behaviors as problems in one's school did not necessarily lead to acknowledging that sexual harassment in general was a problem. However, the behaviors seen as problems were less likely to be dismissed as sexual harassment than personal experiences. This was especially true of the most common behaviors, namely verbal ones. The results demonstrate female students' reluctance to label incidents as sexual harassment, despite the fact that actual behaviors are perceived as environmental problems. Potentially offensive sex-related behaviors become normalized in the school environment and are difficult to address, when little support is provided by schools.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Government’s reform to ensure trust based governance aims to create an environment that makes use of employees’ experience and knowledge and balances the need for control against trust. Steering that does not control in detail, but rather allows those conducting operations room for manoeuvre, has much in common with the theory of total quality management. In an organization that delegates responsibility and authority, employees will feel motivated, results will improve and management’s trust in employees will increase. Still, control systems are important since they provide management with information to ensure that employees act and perform in accordance with organizational goals. The aim of the thesis has been to create knowledge about first line managers’ view on the relationship between trust and control, and if that balance can either contribute to, or impede, quality development within governmental authorities. The study involves an exploration of theoretical similarities between trust based governance and total quality management. The research method has been qualitative and the method for data collection has been semi-structured, narrative interviews. The result of the study indicates that the interviewed managers believe that trust contributes to quality development, that a clear framework can promote trust and that trust not is equivalent to absence of steering. The managers emphasize the importance of being available when needed and believe that it is easier for both them and their employees to perform within a clearly defined room for action. The study contributes to a better understanding for government employed first line managers’ views on trust and control.

Ljud- eller oljud: Hur upplevs ljudsättning av  gränssnitt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The report's purpose is to shed light on the hairdressing industry's environmental impact by chemical emissions, to investigate how the routines for municipal supervisors look like in the hair salons around Sweden. And investigate if these routines could be improved to reduce the harmful emissions and from an environmental perspective create a more sustainable approach. The final aim of the report is that it should operate as an information base for municipal inspectors and also to the authorities and organizations they work with.

Through chemical emissions and inadequate waste disposal hairdressing business has a great influence both on internal and external environments (K. Boll 2011). A report that Stockholm Water conducted in 2012 also shows that residues of aromatic phenols and amines remain in your hair after hair wash and are flushed out through the municipal sewage system. If the dyes are not broken down in the water treatment plant, they can interfere with treatment processes or reduce the quality of the outgoing wastewater and sludge.

Most substances commonly found in hair products are in addition to harmful too toxic for our aquatic organisms and may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment (S. E. Tjus 2014). Today the hairdressing business is not notifiable but they are obligated to perform a self-monitoring system under the Environmental Code (SFS 1998:901). Medical Product Agency and municipalities are operational regulating authorities for cosmetic products and should, according to environmental inspection regulation (2011:13) supervise the hairdressing businesses. Although there is relatively little research on environmentally harmful substances linked to hygiene products, the same substances can often be found through articles which focus on industrial activities (European Parliament 2007). Kathon is an example of this as it except in hair products are also used in paints, adhesives, cutting fluids, putty and sealants. The substance is most likely both allergenic and environmentally harmful (E. Vene 2015) (T. Svensson 2016).

Prior to this report, I chose to conduct an analysis of the current situation of how the Swedish municipalities' practices the supervising on the saloons. To obtain additional documentation I chose some municipalities that had to answer a more detailed questionnaire. Another perspective on these issues has been provided by a survey that was sent out to hairdressers in Sweden. The compilation of these interviews indicates a clear lack of information among the municipality and the hairdressers, the two parties would need a concrete plan to perform a more effective supervision, thereby creating an opportunity to work towards the reduction of environmentally harmful activities.

Modelling and diagnostics of batch processes and analogous kinetic experiments. 1998In: Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems, ISSN 0169-7439, Vol. 44, no 1/2, p. 331-340Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In chemical kinetics and batch processes K variables are measured on the batches at regular time intervals. This gives a J×K matrix for each batch (J time points times K variables). Consequently, a set of N normal batches gives a three-way matrix of dimension (N×J×K). The case when batches have different length is also discussed. In a typical industrial application of batch modelling, the purpose is to diagnose an evolving batch as normal or not, and to obtain indications of variables that together behave abnormally in batch process upsets. Other applications giving the same form of data include pharmaco-kinetics, clinical and pharmacological trials where patients (or mice) are followed over time, material stability testing and other kinetic investigations. A new approach to the multivariate modelling of three-way kinetic and batch process data is presented. This approach is based on an initial PLS analysis of the ((N×J)×K) unfolded matrix ((batch×time)×variables) with ‘local time' used as a single y-variable. This is followed by a simple statistical analysis of the resulting scores and results in multivariate control charts suitable for monitoring the kinetics of new experiments or batches. ‘Upsets' are effectively diagnosed in these charts, and variables contributing to the upsets are indicated in contribution plots. In addition, the degree of ‘maturity' of the batch can be as predicted vs. observed local time. The analysis of batch data with respect to various questions is discussed with respect to typical objectives, overview and summary, classification, and quantitative modelling. This is illustrated by an industrial example of yeast production.

    Abstract [en]

This study will show and discuss various aspect of the study of poetry in the Swedish compulsory school since the 1840s. Poetry was originally read aloud in the classroom and learnt by heart and it was not until the last decades that poetry was brought to play a different role and the way of attitude gradually changed into a less respectful one. Poetry writing among the students became commonly practiced during the second period. A study of curriculum used shows that poetry in general has had a weak standing. There has also been a lack of educational materials in poetry.

Secondly, the study aims to show the image of poetry among teachers. In summary, teachers generally seem to consider poetry as important in school, although difficult to handle. A third aim of the study is to mirror how students evalutate and assess poetry. most students show great difficulties in exprssing their experiences from reading poetry. The majority of them use everyday language and very indistict words.

The final part of the study presents methodological aspects of reading and writing poetry as integrated parts of teaching literature and here various examples of the writing of poetry are given.

One appendix describes Artur Hazelius as editor for literature anthologies. The ther is a list of poetry for children and youth 1946-1990.

Molecular dynamics based analysis of the absorption of spectra of Nd3+-doped Na+ β’’-alumina.1993In: Physical Review B, Vol. 48, no 14, p. 10129-10136Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The polarized absorption spectra of Nd3+-doped Na+ beta''-alumina have been treated theoretically for five neodymium concentrations. The perturbing crystal field, needed in the Judd-Ofelt analysis, is calculated from a molecular-dynamics simulation for each composition. Oscillator strengths and Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters are calculated using a point-charge model at each time step in the simulation for each of the Nd3+ ions in the simulation box. A study of the effect of the dynamics of the system on these parameters was also made. The theoretical results thus obtained are compared to experiment. It is shown that the absorption spectra can be explained essentially on the basis of the special structural situation of the Nd3+ ions in these materials.

On Environmental Grounds: Outdoor Recreation, Place Relations and Environmental Sustainability2015Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the relationship between outdoor recreation and environmental concern as part of the wider issue of environmental sustainability in late-modern societies. It includes studies of environmentalists’ (that is environmentally committed individuals’) preferences and motivations with regard to outdoor recreation, and covers the inquiries of whether and how outdoor recreation can influence levels of environmental concern.

The questions addressed are how environmentalists engage in outdoor recreation, with what motives, and whether participation in outdoor recreation can influence levels of environmental concern. Empirically, the thesis is based on a mixed methods approach, including analyses of data from a national survey on outdoor recreation and a qualitative case study of the organization Nature and Youth Sweden (Fältbiologerna). Theoretically, it is based on the concepts of place, habitus and field.

Study results show that environmentally committed individuals favor participation in appreciative activities in areas perceived as pristine, preferably away from urban environments. Motivations refer to these preferences, but also to aspects of discursive context, social identity and social position. These aspects are also found to be crucial regarding the influence of outdoor recreation on environmental concern. Thus, study results also show a lack of support for environmental concern as an automatic outcome of outdoor recreation. It is rather a combination of interconnected conditions referred to as: favorable place relations, adequate outdoor experience and appropriate social context.

The thesis contributes to new knowledge on the relationships and connections between outdoor recreation and environmental sustainability. While the results are of importance with regard to planning for outdoor recreation and development of nature-based tourism, they are of particular interest for environmental organizations, schools and other institutions working for a more sustainable society.

Travelling for nature?: On the paradox of environmental awareness and travel for nature experiences2014In: Tourism, ISSN 1332-7461, Journal Tourism, Vol. 62, no 1, p. 5-18Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Climate change is widely regarded as the major environmental problem facing the world today. Due to this, transportation, including traveling for recreational purposes, is now being thoroughly examined. Still, and despite a growing awareness of the impact of traveling, the demand for nature based tourism holds its position in general and, paradoxically, also among environmentalists. To understand this paradox, a qualitative study was conducted of Nature and Youth Sweden, to explore an organization that combines a profound commitment to the environment with a great outdoor interest. Data were gathered through focus groups with district boards and by a content analysis of the organization 's magazine. Results show that recreational traveling of environmentalists may be explained by the practice of placing nature in remote and "pristine" areas. Preferences for places characterized by biodiversity, natural quiet, an absence of other people as well as human impact reflect a desire among environmentalists to distance themselves from contemporary urban society. This desire outweighs one of their most important environmental concerns: global warming. Even though the members of Nature and Youth Sweden reject traveling by air on environmental grounds, it is concluded that environmentalism appears to be a reason for traveling, rather than a barrier.

Environmentalism and Tourism Preferences. A Study of Outdoor Recreationalists in Sweden2011In: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, ISSN 1502-2250, E-ISSN 1502-2269, Vol. 11, no 2, p. 190-204Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the linkages between nature-based recreation and preferences of individuals classified as “environmentalists”. Following an overview of the literature, this paper reports on an empirical investigation of the nature-based recreation vs. environmentalism nexus using data from a national Swedish survey. Study findings show that environmentalists (environmentally-oriented individuals) behave differently in terms of their recreation-related preferences when compared to non-environmentalists. Environmentalists prefer outdoor activities with little or no impact on the environment as demonstrated, for example, by their avoidance of extractive (e.g. hunting) and motorized activities (e.g. snowmobiling). Despite these differences, the findings were inconsistent in that while environmentalists avoid some extractive and motorized activities, other similar activities were not avoided. Thus, the results question the use of simplistic recreational classification systems for the understanding of activity preferences and the authors call for more in-depth, qualitative research to further understand the nature-based recreation choices of environmentalists. Study findings also show that environmentally-oriented individuals do not hesitate to travel away from residential areas for participation in nature-based recreation. Therefore, this paper helps us to understand which nature-based activities environmentalists demand and can provide a more informed basis for tourism planning and management.

Three Forms of Interpersonal Trust: Evidence from Swedish Municipalities2012In: Scandinavian Political Studies, ISSN 0080-6757, E-ISSN 1467-9477, Vol. 35, no 4, p. 319-346Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Social trust is usually treated as a dichotomy between particularized and generalized trust. In this article it is argued that a third distinct form, community trust, is neither particularized nor generalized and bounded in space rather than persons. Factor analysis of survey data from 33 Swedish municipalities (N=6,453) distinguishes between particularized, generalized and community trust. Furthermore, regression analyses show that the three trust forms have partly distinct antecedents and linked to different types of behaviours. While generalized trust best predicts leaps of faith in relation to strangers, community trust is the only trust form significantly predicting taking part in local problem solving. Finally, multilevel analysis shows that community trust is the trust form most vulnerable to changes with respect to ethnic diversity and socioeconomic equality. © 2012 The Author(s). Socialt kapital och arbetsattityder2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]
