    We examined if the spatial distribution of epiphytes in a forest stand differs between two sexually and three asexually dispersed species. As study species we have chosen two sexually dispersed species, the lichen Collema curtisporum and the bryophyte Orthotrichum speciosum, and three asexually dispersed species, the lichens C. furfuraceum and Leptogium saturninum and the bryophyte O. obtusifolium. All of these species grow on Populus tremula. In P. tremula stands, individual trees may be regarded as distinct patches for the studied species, while the stand represents a 'landscape" of discrete patches. The study was performed in two relatively homogeneous forest stands. The study revealed that the asexually dispersed species were more common than the sexually dispersed. It was also shown that the sexually dispersed species were more aggregated than P. tremula in both stands. In contrast, the distribution of the asexually dispersed species mirrors, more or less, the distribution of their host, i.e. the spatial pattern shown by P. tremula. It is unlikely that the measured environmental variables strongly influenced the observed spatial distribution. Thus, we suggest that the different dispersal and establishment strategies were important in shaping the local distribution of the species.

    We present a key to the Costa Rican species of Pseudostigmatidae. comprising three genera with the following species: Megaloprepus caerulatus, Mecistogaster linearis, M. modesta, M. ornata and Pseudostigma aberrans. Pseudostigma accedens, which may occur in the region, is also included. For each species we give a brief account of morphology, phenology and life zone preferences, including distributional maps based on more than 270 records. These are not all of the known specimens from the area, but a high enough number to give a relatively good picture of the distribution and status of the species. We found M. caerulatus to be active during the first half of the year in seasonal, tropical semi-dry lowland forest and tropical moist forest at mid-elevation, but like M. linearis, M. caerulatus was active all year round in non-seasonal, tropical wet lowland forest and tropical moist forest at mid-elevation. Mecistogaster modesta also flew year round in non-seasonal, tropical wet lowland forest and tropical moist evergreen forest at mid-elevation, and likewise in seasonal and non-seasonal, tropical premontane moist forest. Only a few findings, however, have been made of M. modesta in seasonal, tropical semi-dry deciduous forest and seasonal, tropical moist evergreen forest. Mecistogaster ornata was missing entirely from non-seasonal, tropical wet lowland forest and non-seasonal, tropical moist forest at mid-elevation, while this species was active year round in seasonal, tropical dry lowland forest and tropical semi-dry forest, as well as in seasonal, tropical moist evergreen forest and tropical premontane moist forest, both at mid-elevation. Pseudostigma aberrans has so far been found too few times in Costa Rica for any indication of flight time preference.

    Abstract [en]

    To be able to understand more in detail what actually happens during chipping, the strain field in a chip during chipping was studied by means of the Digital Speckle Photography (DSP) technique. In addition to recording the strain field, the load on and displacement of the chipping tool was also recorded. The equipment used in this study was a DSP system, an MTS servo hydraulic testing machine and a specially developed chipping device. Displacement controlled testing was performed with a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/s. The results are promising but needs some improvement regarding resolution of the digital images in a vicinity of the knife-edge. The cutting speed in this investigation is low in comparison to normal industrial cutting speeds and since wood in general exhibits a viscoelastic material behaviour this might give a slightly different strain field as compared to an industrial chipping process. However, it is believed that using DSP as a tool for studying the deformations during chipping, even under quite restricted conditions, will increase the understanding of the chipping process. The present study is a part of a larger project aimed at a better understanding of the chip formation and wear mechanisms of wood chipping knifes.

    1 Monitoring studies of pine sawflies with pheromone traps were performed for the first time in Germany. Pheromone traps baited with species-specific pheromone substances were installed in pine forests at different locations in Bavaria, Brandenburg and Lower Saxony during two years. 2 It was possible to track the flight phenology of Diprion pini, Gilpinia pallida and Neodiprion sertifer reliably and to get information about the number of generations of these species in 1997 and 1998. 3 A clear relationship between trap catch and population density could not be detected, but qualitative changes in trap catch caused by different density levels were observed. 4 For D. pini, trap catches were different among endemic populations of different forest types. Furthermore, catches of males reflected the results from the regular cocoon collections by foresters during the previous winter. 5 For N. sertifer, trap catches in endemic populations were well separated from trap catches on sites with higher sawfly densities. However, no significant correlation between trap catch and sawfly density or defoliation level could be found. These results suggest that the efficacy of the pheromone traps probably varied with biological features (sex ratio, density level, immigration) of the particular population.

    No rock at the Earth’s surface escapes weathering. This process is the primary source of all the essential elements for organisms, except nitrogen and carbon. Since the onset of terrestrial life, weathering has been accelerated under the influence of biota. The study of biological weathering started at the end of the 19th century. Although the role of bacteria (Eubacteria, Archaea) has attracted a lot of interest, until recently the role of fungi has largely been neglected. More recently, however, fungal weathering has become an increasingly important focus of biogeochemical research.

    The Ama have existed for more than 2000 years in Japan and Korea. They have been diving for seaweed and molluscs. Their traditional way of fishing, with goggles or a mask, but without a wetsuit, is still practised as a result of laws against overfishing. We investigated cardiovascular diving responses, expressed as heart rate (HR) reduction, peripheral vasoconstriction indicated by skin blood flow (SkBF) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) during breath-hold face immersion in a group of eight elderly male Ama at Chikura, Japan. Their data were compared to those from three other groups: a) elderly non-divers; b) young divers and c) young non-divers. Our previous studies have shown that young divers show a more pronounced bradycardia than young non-divers. The present study of elderly Ama and elderly non-divers was performed to investigate if this difference persists in old age. We found that, in spite of many years of diving experience, HR reduction of the elderly professional divers observed during face immersion did not differ from that of elderly non-divers, but it was much less pronounced than in the two younger groups. We conclude that even if a well-developed diving response at young age has been reduced to the level of non-divers, the Ama are still able to continue their work of diving in old age. Ama that has been a traditionally female occupation, is mostly practised by men at Chikura today. No young have been recruited for this profession. Therefore, the present Ama are senior and the traditional breath-hold diving will probably cease to exist in the near future. The probable reasons for these changes are discussed

    Siderophores in soil solution of coniferous forest soils have been chemically identified for the first time. We have identified the siderophores ferrichrome and ferricrocin in soil solution of the upper organic layer by High Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The soil solutions were sampled from mor layers of podzolic soils from the south and the north of Sweden and from a mor layer overlying granitic rock and intensively colonised by ectomycorrhizal hyphae. Ferrichrome was found in nanomolar concentrations in all soil solutions investigated and ferricrocin only in the soil solution from the mor layer covering a rock and in the soil solution from the north of Sweden. The findings are discussed in relation to the possible role of fungal hyphae and siderophores in weathering minerals in podzolic soils under coniferous forests. Citric and oxalic acid are able to dissolve minerals via complexation of cations from the mineral. Siderophores should be, kinetically and thermodynamically even more efficient complexing agents for trivalent cations than oxalic and citric acid. The present study provides direct for presence of siderophores in soil solution.

    Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fractions and different low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) were determined in soil solutions from two lime or ash treated Norway spruce sites in the south of Sweden. At Hasslöv, 3.45 t ha-1 or 8.75 t ha-1 dolomite were applied 15 years before sampling. Horröd was treated with 4.28 t ha-1 ash and 3.25 t ha-1 dolomite and sampled four years later. Propionate (7–268 M) and malonate (2–34 M) were the LMWOAsfound in the highest concentrations at Hasslöv. Two other LMWOAs dominated at Horröd, namely citrate (18–64 M)and fumarate (5–31 M). The differences in concentration of most of the determined LMWOAs at Hasslöv were significantly increased due to treatment. The LMWOAs comprised between 1.1–6.3% of the DOC at Hasslöv and 4.5–17.6% at Horröd. At Hasslöv normally 3–10% of the total acidity (TA) was due to LMWOAs and the average specific buffer capacity was 74 ± 22 mmol mol-1C.The total DOC concentration in the mor layer solution was 16 mM for the dolomite treated plots compared to 10 mM at the untreated plot. A major part of the increase in DOC at the treated plots apparently had a hydrophobic character and was of high molecular weight corresponding to 3–10 kDa. The concentration of DOC < 1 kDa in the control and treated plots was similar.

    Abstract [en]

    Soil solutions were taken from untreated and lime treated Norway spruce sites in the south of Sweden. At the limed sites 3.45 t ha−1 (L) or 8.75 t ha−1 (H) dolomite were applied 15 years before sampling. The mean concentration of inorganic Al (AlQR) in the untreated control plots (C) was 37 μM and the concentration of AlQR decreased when the dosages of dolomite treatments increased. For the H plots, with high doses of dolomite treatment the mean concentration of AlQR was 17 μM. The total Al (Altot) also decreased by dolomite treatment, from 72 μM to 56 μM. Propionate (7–268 μM) and malonate (2–34 μM) were the low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) found in the highest concentrations at Hasslöv. The differences in concentration of most of the determined LMWOAs were significantly increased due to treatment. The citrate average concentration for the different plots varied between 2.8 μM and 5.1 μM and the concentration of oxalate had concentrations between 1.7 μM and 2.6 μM. The experimental concentration of Al bound to LMWOAs obtained by ultrafiltration (<1000 Da) of the soil solution was in the mor layer on average 12% for the C plot and the L plots and 4% in the H plots. In the AE horizon the figures were 15% for the C plot and about 7% for the treated L and H plots, and in the Bhs horizon 9% for both the C, L and H plots. Two chemical equilibrium models were evaluated: Winderemere Humic Aqueous Model (WHAM) and a model treating the high molecular weight organic acids as monoprotic. The concentrations of inorganic Al, Al bound to identified LMWOAs and high molecular weights acids in soil solution (mor, AE and Bhs) from untreated and lime treated soil were calculated. The modelled inorganic Al values of the control plot were similar to the concentrations found in the soil solution (AlQR). For the dolomite treated plots the concentration of AlQR (0–40 μM) was higher in soil solution than that modelled by WHAM and the monoprotic model. The experimental concentration of Al bound to LMWOAs obtained by ultrafiltration (<1000 Da) of the soil solution was comparable but always higher than the modelled values. The modelling confirms that an appreciable part of the Al is strongly complexed with LMWOAs in the organic and eluvial horizons of the podzolized soil, suggesting that LMWOAs are efficient weathering agents and important for the formation of the eluvial horizon in podzols. Saturation indices (SI) for two solid Al phases were also calculated, including crystalline gibbsite and proto-imogolite (PI). The SIs for both the C and the treated plots (L and H) showed very broad ranges for the different horizons investigated, indicating undersaturation as well as oversaturation with respect to gibbsite and proto-imogolite.

    Abstract [en]

    Striping is the most common print non-uniformity on corrugated board. It is defined as periodic print density and/or print gloss variations parallel to the flutes. Corrugated boards are mainly printed with flexography, making striping a major concern for the flexographic post-printing industry. In spite of its long history, the basic mechanisms of striping have not been fully understood, and no concrete solution has been provided. The objective of this thesis is to obtain an understanding of the fundamental mechanisms behind and a solution to striping. Both experimental and numerical approaches have been taken in thiswork. Nonlinear finite element models have been constructed in both corrugated board and halftone dot scales to determine the pressure distributions in the printing nip. Ink transfer experiments have been performed to determine the print density vs. pressure relations. Parametric studies have been done for the effects of printing system variables and deformations. The results showed that striping is predominantly print density variations caused by pressure variations in the printing nip. The pressure variations are inherent to the corrugated board structure. Washboarding was shown to play a minor part in causing print density variations, but might contribute to gloss striping. A new printing plate design has been proposed to eliminate the pressure variations and hence the print density striping.

    Print non-uniformity problems are a major concern for flexo post-printers. Many of these non-uniformities are suspected to be caused by the corrugated board structure itself. Striping is the most obvious one, but also other print quality problems might be structure-related. This work focuses on how deformations of the board might lead to print non-uniformities, and if the deformation of halftone dots is the mechanism behind striping in halftone flexo post-printing. The problems were analysed by using finite element models to simulate deformed board and halftone dot compression in the printing nip. Distortions of the board due to non-uniform hygro-thermal strains were shown to be a potential cause of print non-uniformities. Striping in halftone prints was found to be caused by differences in dot gain between ridge and valley areas above the flute structure.

    A fintie element model has been used to simulate how halftone dots deform during printing. Another finite element model has also been used for simulating how the pressure distribution in the nip changes when the corrugated board is deformed before printing by e.g. moisture induced warp. The simulations showed that striping in halftone prints can be explained by the deformation of halftone dots leading to more "dot gain" above flute ridges than between. When the corrugated board is deformed over a few flutes, the pressure distribution is affected which might cause print non-uniformities.

    Leaves lying on the forest floor are a major source of dissolved organic substances in soil and surface waters, and these substances have important effects in those environments. We used zero-tension lysimeters to study the chemical characteristics of water percolating through litter from various species of forest trees. The leaching rates were greatest in the autumn and declined rapidly thereafter, especially for deciduous litter. During an annual cycle, 2.5-17% of the initial contents of the carbon in the litter was recovered as dissolved organic carbon in percolates. Humus-like substances, hydrophilic acids and hydrophilic neutral compounds constituted the major fractions of dissolved C. Leachates from deciduous leaf litter were only partly biodegradable, and those from spruce needles were scarcely biodegradable. Low molecular weight organic acids constituted 0-12% of the dissolved organic carbon in the percolates of the first autumn sampling and decreased over time. Acetic and formic acids were present at the largest concentrations, up to 30 μmol 1-1 per g litter, and gluconic, pyruvic, fumaric, oxalic and citric acids were also frequent in significant concentrations. Among the aromatic acids, ρ-hydroxybenzoic acid was identified in four out of five autumn samples. The organic components in litter leachates are important for the microbial activity in soil and surface waters. The organic acids enhance weathering and translocation of metals by their ability to form complexes. Litter is also a source of inorganic ions in soil solutions. The dominant cations in the percolates were K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+, and spruce litter also yielded large quantities of Al and Fe.

    We investigated the short-term effects of forest clearcutting on land snails (terrestrial gastropods) in 15 forest stands along small streams in Sweden. Two different silvicultural treatments were applied at each site: clearcutting across the stream channel and buffer strips 10 m wide on each side of the stream. Additionally, we studied 10 reference sites in unlogged riparian forests along similar-sized streams. All sites were studied before logging and then 2.5 years after logging. After clearcutting the number of individuals in a 0.5-m(2) sample from each site decreased on average from 107 to 87, and the mean number of species per sample decreased from 9.9 to 7.7. Most species were negatively affected, but there were also clear differences in sensitivity. There were correlations between species survival and ground moisture. At the wettest clearcut sites with an almost intact bryophyte cover, the land snails were unaffected by clearcutting. This result suggests that wet or moist forest floors can serve as refugia even at very small spatial scales (e.g., shallow hollows, crevices). If this is an important mechanism, the spatial distribution of small habitats could be important for the long-term survival of the snail fauna or other small, dispersal-limited organisms at clearcut sites. In the buffer strips, the number of individuals decreased but not the number of species, indicating that buffer-strip retention is a good practice for protecting land snails in riparian forests. The varying effectiveness of the buffer strip could partly be explained by the proportion of the remaining basal area, emphasizing that buffer strips could be even more effective if efforts are made to avoid heavy damage by windthrows.

    A conference entitled 'Conservation Ecology of Cryptogams' was held in Bispgården, Sweden in November, 2005 to increase awareness about the amount of ecological research on cryptogams and the inclusion of these organisms in practical conservation. The conference brought together researchers in the field and helped in collecting findings on the ecology of cryptogams. The topics discussed at the event covered theoretical developments in ecology and the links between these areas of research and their application in applied conservation. It was also helpful in reducing the gap between leading researchers and conservation professionals and covered a wide range of topics on significant ecological research on cryptogams. Participants at the conference also revealed that many general ecological theories can be applied to cryptogams and specific theories, models, and applications need to be developed for conservation of cryptogams.

    Studies on the effectiveness of forest buffer strips left along streams after logging have long overlooked the biota of the buffers themselves, despite their high species richness. We investigated mosses and liverworts (bryophytes), abundant and species-rich groups in boreal forests, before and 2.5 years after logging along 15 small streams. In each Site, two 1000-m(2) (20 X 50 m) plots along the stream were inventoried; one plot in an area subjected to clear-cutting, and another in a buffer strip (10 m wide on each side of the stream). Ten plots along small streams in forest reserves in the same region were used as references. We found that less than half as many bryophyte species per plot disappeared after logging in the buffer strips compared to the clearcuts. The changes in bryophyte cover and in species composition were smaller in the buffer strips, and the species that were negatively affected in the clearcuts were less affected in the buffer strips. However, there was a significant change in species composition in the buffer strips compared to the references. Substrate form. and taxonomic group were important factors in understanding this turnover. Many species growing on substrates with a convex form (e.g., logs, tree bases, and mesic ground) decreased or disappeared, while species on concave substrates were rather unaffected. This held for both mosses and liverworts, although liverworts were generally more sensitive than mosses. The difference in response of assemblages on convex vs. concave substrates makes changes in microclimate due to logging a likely explanation. The species in most need of protection (i.e., the red-listed species) were among the ones with strongest declines in the 20 m wide buffer strips. In order to function optimally for bryophyte conservation, forests along small streams need to be protected from high wind-throw frequency and strong edge effects. Increasing the width of buffer strips at sites with known or potential values (e.g., large amounts of woody debris or boulders) should be considered a better strategy than using narrow buffer strips with a fixed width.

    We set up two alternative hypotheses on how environmental variables could foster nestedness; one of "nested habitats" and another of "nested habitat quality". The former hypothesis refers to situations where the nestedness of species depends on a nestedness of discrete habitats. The latter considers situations where all species in an assemblage increase in abundance along the same environmental gradient, but differ in specialisation or tolerance. We tested whether litter-dwelling land snails (terrestrial gastropods) in boreal riparian forest exhibited a nested community structure, whether such a pattern was related to differences in environmental variables among sites, and which of the two hypotheses that best could account for the found pattern. We sampled litter from 100 m(2) plots in 29 mature riparian forest sites along small streams in the boreal zone of Sweden. The number of snail species varied between 3 and 14 per site. Ranking the species-by-site matrix by PCA scores of the first ordination axis revealed a similarly significant nested pattern as when the matrix was sorted by number of species, showing that the species composition in this meta-community can be properly described as nested. Several environmental variables, most notably pH index, were correlated with the first PCA axis. All but two species had positive eigenvectors in the PCA ordination and the abundance increased considerably along the gradient for most of the species implying that the hypothesis of "nested habitats" was rejected in favour of the "nested habitat quality" hypothesis. Analyses of nestedness have seldom been performed on equal sized plots, and our study shows the importance of understanding that variation in environmental variables among sites can result in nested communities. The conservation implications are different depending on which of our two hypotheses is supported; a conservation focus on species "hotspots" is more appropriate if the communities are nested because of "nested habitat quality".

    Nanoparticles coated with single stranded DNA have been shown to efficiently hybridize to targets of complementary DNA. This property might be used to implement programmable (or algorithmic) self-assembly to build nanoparticle structures. However, we argue that a DNA coated nanoparticle by itself cannot be used as a programmable self-assembly building block since it does not have directed bonds. A general scheme for assembling and purifying nanoparticle eight-mers with eight geometrically well-directed bonds is presented together with some preliminary experimental work.
