Antisolvent precipitation of water-soluble hemicelluloses from TMP process water2014In: Carbohydrate Polymers, ISSN 0144-8617, E-ISSN 1879-1344, Vol. 113, p. 411-419Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the thermomechanical pulping (TMP) of spruce, hemicelluloses (mainly galactoglucomannans, GGMs) are released into the process water at relatively low concentrations that are currently impossible to efficiently recover. This paper examines the recovery of hemicelluloses precipitated from TMP process water via solubility reduction by adding antisolvents such as methanol, ethanol, and acetone. The phase separation was monitored by turbidity measurements. Gravimetric analysis, FTIR, GC–MS, UV spectroscopy, and ICP-OES were used to determine the yield, purity, and composition of the precipitates. Gel permeation chromatography and pulsed field-gradient self-diffusion NMR were used to measure the molecular mass distribution of the precipitates. Acetone was found to be the most efficient antisolvent, giving the highest yield at the lowest addition. The contents of lipophilic extractives and lignin impurities were below 0.5% and 1.6%, respectively, and the metal content was approximately 2% in the precipitates obtained with acetone.

    Abstract [en]

The investigation in this paper consisted of a case study. The focus of our workhas been on implementation, leadership and participation. The aim of this thesis was to study how the implementation of ERP can go to apublic organization and how employee participation and managers' leadershiplooks during implementation. The overall aim has been to identify areas forimprovement and suggest solutions. We have combined a quantitative surveyand qualitative interviews for our case study. The summary of our conclusions were the following: The studied organizationin the public sector is large, complex, and hierarchical and has a specificresponsibility with roles and permissions and that is why a stagedimplementation with sixth insertion step has been applied. Strengths in theimplementation process were: project methodology planning, gradual entry keypersonnel, and advanced users, testing activities and its own managementstructure. Weaknesses in the implementation process were: leadership, changemanagement, empowerment, education, communication, resource planning, unclear purpose, unclear objectives, and vision that are not communicated tothe employees in the organization. Weaknesses and strengths were summarizedin a proprietary model that shares the implementation process in two parts- thetechnical and the organizational. The decisive factor in the implementationprocess proved to be the organizational part, aspects of which involveorganization and management.

Assessing the taxonomic status of Osmoderma cristinae (Coleoptera Scarabaeidae), endemic to Sicily, by genetic, morphological and pheromonal analyses2016In: Journal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary Research, ISSN 0947-5745, E-ISSN 1439-0469, Vol. 54, no 3, p. 206-214Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Resolving complexes of closely related and cryptic insect species can be challenging, especially when dealing with rare and protected taxa that are difficult to collect for genetic and morphological analyses. Until recently, populations of the genus Osmoderma (Scarabaeidae), widespread in Europe, were treated as a single species O.eremita (Scopoli, 1763) in spite of observed geographic variation in morphology. A previous survey using sequence data from the mtDNA cytochrome C oxidase I gene (COI) revealed the occurrence of at least two distinct lineages within this species complex: O.eremita in the west and O.barnabita Motschulsky, 1845, in the east. Interestingly, beetles confined to Sicily have been described as a distinct species, O.cristinae Sparacio, 1994, based on morphological traits. Only few Sicilian specimens were included in the former genetic analysis, and the results led to a still questionable taxonomic rank for these populations. To explore the robustness of the previous taxonomic arrangement for O.cristinae, a combination of genetic, morphological and pheromonal analyses was used. A 617-bp fragment of the COI gene, aligned with O.cristinae and O.eremita sequences already available in GenBank, showed a clear genetic divergence between the two species (interspecific mean distance=6.6%). Moreover, results from AFLP markers sustained the distinction of the two species. In addition, geometric morphometric analyses of the shape of male genitalia revealed a clear differentiation between the two species. Via scent analysis and field trapping, we demonstrated the production of the sex pheromone (R)-(+)--decalactone by males of O.cristinae, the attraction by conspecific individuals (mostly females) to this compound, and a lack of antagonistic effect of (S)-(-)--decalactone. The fact that O.eremita and O.eremita use the same compound for mate finding suggests that this sex pheromone has not undergone a differentiation and probably the allopatry of these two species compensates for the absence of a mechanism to avoid cross-attraction. Our genetic and morphological data support the divergence of the two species and confirm the species status for O.cristinae, while sex pheromones are confirmed to be invariant among different species of the genus Osmoderma.

Using odour traps for population monitoring and dispersal analysis of the threatened saproxylic beetles Osmoderma eremita and Elater ferrugineus in central Italy2014In: Journal of Insect Conservation, ISSN 1366-638X, E-ISSN 1572-9753, Vol. 18, no 5, p. 801-813Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Pheromone-based monitoring could be a very efficient method to assess the conservation status of rare and elusive insect species, but there are still few studies for which pheromone traps have been used to obtain information on presence, abundance, phenology and movements of such insects. We performed a mark-recapture study of two threatened saproxylic beetles, Osmoderma eremita (Scarabaeidae) and its predator Elater ferrugineus (Elateridae), in two beech forests of central Italy using pheromone baited window traps and unbaited pitfall traps. Two lures were used: (1) the male-produced sex pheromone of O. eremita (racemic γ-decalactone) to attract females of both species, and (2) the female-produced sex pheromone of E. ferrugineus (7-methyloctyl (Z)-4-decenoate), to attract conspecific males. In total, 13 O. eremita and 1,247 E. ferrugineus individuals were trapped. For E. ferrugineus, males were detected earlier than females, and 7-methyloctyl (Z)-4-decenoate was much more efficient lure compared to racemic γ-decalactone in detecting its presence. The population size at the two sites were estimated to 520 and 1,369 individuals, respectively. Our model suggests a sampling effort of ten traps checked for 3 days being sufficient to detect the presence of E. ferrugineus at a given site. The distribution of dispersal distances for the predator was best described by the negative exponential function with 1 % of the individuals dispersing farther than 1,600 m from their natal site. In contrast to studies on these beetles in Northern Europe, the activity pattern of the two beetle species was not influenced by variation in temperature during the season.

Att leva med Reumatoid Artritis: En litteraturöversikt om hur personer med reumatoid artrit upplever och hanterar sjukdomen i det dagliga livet.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Raising creativity and understanding of problems during learning computer visualization applications by using animation and visualization2000In: IWALT 2000: INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON ADVANCED LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES - ADVANCED LEARNING TECHNOLOGY: DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT ISSUES, LOS ALAMITOS: IEEE COMPUTER SOC , 2000, p. 296-297Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Learning visual based application is one of the most difficult problems for all types of students. This is valid for art and technical education, as well. One of the reasons is that education in computer visualization, especially in the area of 3D modeling, 3D animation, computer-generated special effects and programming for Vp applications, is not the same as education for standard computer applications. From technical students it demands mom creativity than usual technical subjects, like programming, or math. From art students it asks mom technical knowledge and technical ability than they am usually required The solution lies in changing the learning paradigm towards a flexible and differential approach. Hem,ve discuss the using of computer generated animation and visualization during the learning process.

NOMA Enhanced Backscatter Communication for Green IoT Networks2019In: 16th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems (ISWCS), 2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Backscatter communication has recently emerged as a promising technology to enable passive sensing-based Internet-of-things (IoT) applications. In a backscatter communication network, uplink transmissions of multiple nodes are usually multiplexed in time- or frequency-domain to avoid collisions, yet it is desirable to improve the uplink capacity further. In this paper, we study a wireless-powered backscatter communication system, where the sensors use a hybrid channel access scheme by combining time division multiplexing access(TDMA) with power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access(PD-NOMA) to enhance the system performance in terms of outage probability and throughput. Our analysis shows that the proposed PD-NOMA increases both the spectrum efficiency and the throughput of the system.

Incidence of suicide in East Azerbaijan Province, Iran2016In: Social Determinants of Health, ISSN 2423-7337, Vol. 2, no 2, p. 61-69Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background:Suicide is a major problem world-wide. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of suicide in East Azerbaijan province, Iran.

Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted from 2010 to 2011. We analysed some characteristics of the cases of suicide based on the health system database. Variables such as demographics, outcomes (fatal/nonfatal), and methods used were recorded. Data were analysed using Chi-square as well as T-test.

Results: A total of 3,768 reported cases of suicide were analysed. More cases were reported by married than single people. The incidence rate of suicide was 101.3 per 100,000. Most of the attempted suicides occurred in younger people. Attempted suicide in women (63.7%) was higher than men (36.3%). The most frequent method of suicide in both sexes was drug overdose. There was a statistically significant relationship between suicide’s outcome and gender, job, marital status and education (p<0.001). The case fatality rate among males was significantly higher than females (OR=3.7, 95% CI: 2.5–5.8). Hanging (72.3%) and drug overdose (0.9%) had the highest and lowest case fatality rate, respectively. Drug overdose was slightly more frequent among women than men (91.3% versus 84.2%). The rate of poisoning increased gradually until the age-group 45-54 years. Drug overdose was more prevalent among single than married people.

Conclusions: Due to the high incidence of completed suicide, it is recommended to establish counselling centres for mental ill-health, especially a suicide hotline with appropriate availability to all population.

    Abstract [en]

FPGA based smart NIR camera2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Road conditions are a critical issue for road users as, if not given sufficient attention, they may threaten users’ lives. The environmental parameters, such as snowy, icy, dry and wet, are important in relation to the condition of roads. This is particularly true in relation to the northern regions and greatest concern should be in relation to snowy and icy situations. In this thesis, a system based on an InGaAs area scan sensor utilizes NIR technology to detect water or ice on the road so as to enable drivers to avoid slippery road conditions. The conditions caused by freezing water on road surface are particularly dangerous and are not easy to observe and it is hope that this project will boost traffic safety. The system is able to assist road maintenance personnel in forecasting and detecting slippery road conditions during winter road maintenance (WRM). The system, which is based on FPGA, has functionalities that display the captured images on an HDMI monitor and send the images to the software on a host PC via the UART protocol. An interface board, which carries the sensor and which connects to the FPGA board, is developed for NIR sensor. VHDL implementation and PC software design are the works included in the project. Besides, this device is exploited utilizing InGaAs image sensor. According to its features, it can be applied in other applications which will also be discussed. Finally, experiments are conducted in order to investigate the system’s operation with the variation of temperature.

Examination of the community-specific prevalence of and factors associated with substance use and misuse among Rural and Urban adolescents: a cross-sectional analysis in Bosnia and Herzegovina2015In: BMJ Open, ISSN 2044-6055, E-ISSN 2044-6055, Vol. 5, no 11, article id e009446Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: The community of residence (ie, urban vs rural) is one of the known factors of influence on substance use and misuse (SUM). The aim of this study was to explore the community-specific prevalence of SUM and the associations that exist between scholastic, familial, sports and sociodemographic factors with SUM in adolescents from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, which was completed between November and December 2014, the participants were 957 adolescents (aged 17 to 18 years) from Bosnia and Herzegovina (485; 50.6% females). The independent variables were sociodemographic, academic, sport and familial factors. The dependent variables consisted of questions on cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption. We have calculated differences between groups of participants (gender, community), while the logistic regressions were applied to define associations between the independent and dependent variables. Results: In the urban community, cigarette smoking is more prevalent in girls (OR= 2.05; 95% CI 1.27 to 3.35), while harmful drinking is more prevalent in boys (OR= 2.07; 95% CI 1.59 to 2.73). When data are weighted by gender and community, harmful drinking is more prevalent in urban boys (OR= 1.97; 95% CI 1.31 to 2.95), cigarette smoking is more frequent in rural boys (OR= 1.61; 95% CI 1.04 to 2.39), and urban girls misuse substances to a greater extent than rural girls (OR= 1.70; 95% CI 1.16 to 2.51, OR= 2.85; 95% CI 1.88 to 4.31, OR= 2.78; 95% CI 1.67 to 4.61 for cigarette smoking, harmful drinking and simultaneous smoking-drinking, respectively). Academic failure is strongly associated with a higher likelihood of SUM. The associations between parental factors and SUM are more evident in urban youth. Sports factors are specifically correlated with SUM for urban girls. Conclusions: Living in an urban environment should be considered as a higher risk factor for SUM in girls. Parental variables are more strongly associated with SUM among urban youth, most probably because of the higher parental involvement in children' personal lives in urban communities (ie, college plans, for example). Specific indicators should be monitored in the prevention of SUM.

    Abstract [sv]

Background: The aim of the caregiver is to alleviate or prevent suffering. Children who are hospitalized are often subjected to unnecessary suffering. As a child nurse, one has an important role in the meeting with the child, where the child's perspective should always be in focus. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to highlight the nurses' experiences of assessing pain in children aged two to seven years. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 child nurses’ at a children's clinic in the north of Sweden. The material was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The result showed an increased need for education and clearer routines / guidelines. All child nurses were considered to use the clinical look in the assessment of the child's pain, however, there were few who estimated pain according to the pain estimation scale. Conclusion: More education is required about children and pain, and to what extent pain assessment instruments should be used

Nyckelord: Medialisering, partiledardebatter, kommersialisering, professionalisering, förenkling, medielogik, politisk logik, gestaltningsteorin, spelgestaltning, tolkande journalistik, journalisters synlighet.

Hur andelen kvinnor i styrelsen och medieexponering påverkar kvaliteten i CSR-rapporter2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

CSR reporting (Corporate Social Responsibility) has become an increasingly important factor in the relationship between companies and their stakeholders. It brings an opportunity for companies to show their goodwill by providing information to stakeholders about how they work to create a positive influence on society and the environment beyond what is required bylaw. This study aims to analyze the quality of CSR reports and how it is affected. The purpose of the study is to analyze the relationships between the proportion of women in the board, media exposure and quality and also analyze whether media exposure has a mediating role in the relationship between the proportion of women and quality. The relationships are analyzedby a series of regressions for the individual variable conditions and a mediator analysis for the mediator ratio. The results of the study are based on a selection of 107 American companies and 75 European companies, showing that the proportion of women in the Board has a positive and significant relationship with media exposure and quality. Media exposure has a positive and significant link with quality and also represents a full mediator in the relationship between the proportion of women and quality. There is also a significant difference in theproportion of women in the board between companies operating in a coordinated market economy and a liberal market economy.

    Abstract [sv]

Determinants of Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents: The Role of Sexual Harassment and Implications for Preventive Interventions2016Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Depression is considered the worldwide leading cause of illness and disability in young people and an urgent public health issue. Within the field of public health it is of interest to deepen the understanding of determinants of depressive symptoms (DS) that are possible to address on a political or an organizational level. Also, it is of great importance to find methods to prevent depression in adolescents. To address these issues, the present thesis had two Aims: I) To study determinants of DS in adolescents, and II) to, by means of a non-randomized pragmatic trial evaluation, investigate the effectiveness a cognitive-behavioral intervention (DISA) in a real-world setting in relation to determinants of DS in adolescent girls. This was addressed by asking a) Which determinants on individual, psychosocial and structural levels are associated with DS in adolescents? (Paper I); b) What are the directional pathways between sexual harassment (SH) and DS? (Paper II); c) Which features characterize students who were assigned to a cognitive-behavioral intervention regarding levels of DS, psychosocial aspects and socioeconomic status of the respondents as well as of schools? (Paper III); d) Does DISA have an effect on DS in girls aged 14-16? (Paper IV); and e) Are there differences between the DISA participants and non-participants in the effects of psychosocial and structural determinants on DS? (Paper IV). Method: Data was collected in January 2010, 2011, and 2012, by means of a self-administered, electronic questionnaire in school. Students aged 14-16 in all nine public and one independent high school in a municipality in northern Sweden participated in the study (~1,000-1,200 students depending on the wave). All studies had DS as the single outcome variable. Individual level determinants were self-esteem and self-efficacy. Psychosocial determinants were parental/peer/teacher support; school demands; sexual harassment; and bullying. Structural determinants were family material affluence; parental foreign background, parental employment status; disrupted family, and personal relative affluence. Logistic regression was employed for research question a) (Paper I). Structural equation (SEM) cross-lag models were modeled for research question b) (Paper II). The Mann-Whitney U statistic was employed for research question c) (Paper III). SEM was used for research questions d-e) (Paper IV). Results: Determinants on individual, psychosocial and structural levels were independently associated with depressive symptoms in both genders. Self-efficacy, low teacher support, bullying victimization, and low personal relative affluence was associated with elevated levels of DS in both genders (Paper I). In girls, low parental support, high school demands, and sexual harassment victimization (SH) were also associated with elevated levels of DS. Among boys, parental migrant background was also associated with DS. Among girls, both the targeting of girls with elevated DS, and the consequence of SH explained the relationship between DS and SH victimization over time. In boys, only the predating of DS explained the association between DS and SH (Paper II). Only girls were assigned to DISA during 2011 and DISA participants reported higher levels of DS and lower levels of self-esteem than the non-participants at pre-intervention, which indicates that DISA was used as a targeted intervention for girls with elevated symptoms. Also, DISA participants reported higher levels of SH victimization, less peer support, and lower personal relative affluence (Paper III). In contrast to the non-participants, DISA participants did not increase their mean scoring on DS at an eight months follow-up. However, SEM analyses showed that the effect of DISA participation on DS at follow-up was negligible (Paper IV). Conclusions: This study showed that SH victimization was an important determinant for DS in girls followed by personal relative affluence. Among boys, personal relative affluence and parental migrant background were the most important factors. SH victimization had mental health consequences in girls only. DISA was implemented as a targeted intervention rather than as selective or universal one, and did not have an effect on DS in this group of girls. Implications for further research and health promotion practice in the school setting are discussed.

Dimensions of peer sexual harassment victimization and depressive symptoms in adolescence: a longitudinal cross-lagged study in a Swedish sample2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sexual harassment is commonly considered unwanted sexual attention and a form of gender-based violence that can take physical, verbal and visual forms and it is assumed to cause later depression in adolescents. There is a dearth of research explicitly testing this assumption and the directional pathway remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to use a feminist theoretical framework to test competing models in respect of the direction of the relationships between dimensions of peer sexual harassment victimization and dimensions of depressive symptoms from ages14 to 16 in adolescents. The study also aimed to investigate gender differences inthese pathways. Cross-lagged models were conducted using a three-wave (2010, 2011 and 2012) longitudinal study of 2330 students (51 % females) from Sweden, adjusted for social background. Girls subjected to sexual harassment in grade seven continued to experience sexual harassment the following2 years. There was weaker evidence of repeated experience of sexual harassment among boys. Depressive symptoms were stable over time in both genders. Sexual name-calling was the dimension that had the strongest associations to all dimensions of depressive symptoms irrespective of gender. In girls, name-calling was associated with later somatic symptoms and negative affect, while anhedonia (reduced ability to experience pleasure) preceded later name-calling. Physical sexual harassment had a reciprocal relationship to somatic symptoms in girls. In boys, name-calling was preceded by all dimensions of depressive symptoms. It is an urgent matter to prevent sexual harassment victimization, as it is most likely to both cause depressive symptoms or a reciprocal cycle of victimization and depression symptoms in girls as well as boys.

Online Sexual Victimisation in Youth: Predictors and Cross-Sectional Associations with Depressive Symptoms2018In: European Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1101-1262, E-ISSN 1464-360X, Vol. 28, no 6, p. 1018-1023Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The aim was to analyze (i) the prevalence of online unwanted sexual solicitation (USS) victimization, (ii) predictors of online USS and (iii) the associations between online USS and depressive symptoms in Swedish pupils in grades 7–9.

    Methods

An electronic questionnaire was disseminated in 2011 in schools in a municipality in the northern part of Sweden. Total n = 1193 (boys n = 566; girls n= 627). Logistic regression models were fitted to test the cross-sectional associations between predictors of online USS and depressive symptoms, respectively.

    Results

One third of girls and every fifth boy reported online USS victimization. In boys, predictors associated with online USS were offline bullying and sexual harassment victimization. Only offline sexual harassment victimization was associated with online USS in girls. Girls victimized by online USS had about twice the likelihood to report depressive symptoms compared to non-victimized girls. There were no associations between online USS and depressive symptoms in boys. While offline bullying was associated with depressive symptoms in both genders, offline sexual harassment victimization increased the likelihood to report depressive symptoms in girls only.

    Conclusions

Online USS was common among Swedish youth, particularly among girls. Schools, parents and internet safety educators should look at co-occurrence of different forms of victimization as offline victimization was a predictor of online USS. Online USS was associated with depressive symptoms in girls and may hence be a factor driving gender inequity in mental health in youth.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the DISA-programme in preventing depressive symptoms (DS) in adolescent girls, as implemented in a real-world school setting, accounting for baseline socioeconomic and psychosocial factors, and to investigate whether the effects of these baseline variables on DS differed between intervention participants and non-participants. In this non-randomised pragmatic trial, an electronic questionnaire was disseminated in 2011 (baseline) and 2012 (follow-up) in schools in one municipality in northern Sweden. Pupils (total n=275; intervention participants identified in the questionnaire: n=53; non-partici-pants: n=222) were 14–15 years old at baseline. The groups were compared by means of SEM. DISA could not predict differences in DS at follow-up in this real-life setting. In the overall sample, sexual harassment victimisation (SH) at baseline was associated with DS at follow-up and the estimate for SH increased in the DISA-participants compared to the overall sample.

A Latent Class Analysis of Violence Poly-victimization in Youth2018In: European Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1101-1262, E-ISSN 1464-360X, Vol. 28, p. 483-484Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Violence among youth is common and has been linked to poor mental health outcomes. There is some evidence that there are groups of youth who are victims of more than one form of violence but more knowledge is needed in terms of patterning of subgroups of multiple violence victimization. Aim: To explore if there are distinct subgroups of youth with particular patterns of violence victimization. Method: Survey data from a Swedish sample (n = 1,569) of youth 14-16 years old were used (females 48.4%). Using a broad definition of violence, respondents indicated if they had experienced physical violence, threat of physical violence, bullying, sexual harassment, cyber bullying, online sexual victimization, and other adverse sexual experience in the past six months as well as lifetime physical violence victimization. Distinct subgroups of youth within the data set with particular patterns of violence victimization were identified using Latent Class Analysis (LCA). Model fit was assessed using the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC), with smaller values indicating better model fit. Results: Preliminary results show three distinct subgroups: 1. Sexualized violence off- and online (girls 66.6%), 2. Bullying only (girls 47.5%) and 3. Multi-victimization including threat of physical violence, violence in the past six months and lifetime, sexual harassment on- and offline, bullying on- and offline as well as other adverse sexual experience (girls 47.6%). Conclusions: Three distinct subgroups of violence victimization in a sample of 14-16 year old youth was evident in the data. There was a greater representation of girls in the sexualized violence sub-group. Further research as well as preventive programs should acknowledge that many young people are victims of several types of violence. Future research should also investigate the implications of multi-victimization on mental health outcomes.

Depressive symptoms and the associations with individual, psychosocial, and structural determinants in Swedish adolescents2012In: Health, ISSN 1949-5005, Vol. 4, no 10, p. 881-889Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Depressive symptoms in adolescents are an in-creasing public health issue in Sweden and in most Western countries. Aim: To explore how individual, psychosocial, and structural deter-minants are associated with depressive symp-toms in Swedish adolescents. Methods: A web- based questionnaire was answered by 1193 13- to 16-year-old boys (n = 566) and girls (n = 627). Stepwise logistic regressions were employed to analyse the association between depressive sym- ptoms and various determinants at the individ-ual level (self-efficacy), the psychosocial level (parental, peer, and teacher support, school de-mands, sexual harassment, and bullying) and the structural level (family affluence, having less money than friends, and parental foreign back-ground). Results: Determinants at the individual, psychosocial, and structural levels were inde-pendently associated with high levels of depres-sive symptoms in both boys and girls. The full model explained a high proportion of the vari-ance in depressive symptoms in both genders; 34.1% in boys and 36.8% in girls. The psycho-social level contributed the most to explaining the variance in depressive symptoms in boys. In girls, when harassment variables were separated from psychosocial variables, the harassment var- iables contributed as much to the full model as the rest of the psychosocial variables combined. Conclusions: Addressing psychosocial determi-nants provides the greatest benefits for prevent-ing depressive symptoms in adolescents. Ac-knowledging the association between sexual harassment and depressive symptoms for girls and having less money than their friends for boys and girls are particularly important.

What students do schools allocate to a cognitive-behavioural intervention?: Characteristics of adolescent participants in Northern Sweden2015In: International Journal of Circumpolar Health, ISSN 2242-3982, E-ISSN 2242-3982, Vol. 74, p. 29805-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background. Adolescents are a vulnerable group when it comes to the risk of developing depression. Preventing the onset of depressive episodes in this group is therefore a major public health priority. In the last decades, school-based cognitive-behavioural interventions have been a common primary prevention approach. However, evidence on what girls actually are allocated to such interventions when no researchers are involved is scarce.

Objective. To explore how a selective cognitive-behavioural program (Depression In Swedish Adolescents) developed to prevent depression in adolescents, was implemented in a naturalistic setting in schools in northern part of Sweden. The focus was on characteristics of participants allocated to the intervention.

Design. Cross-sectional baseline data on depressive symptoms, school environment and socio-economic factors were collected in 2011 by means of questionnaires in schools in a municipality in the northern part of Sweden. Intervention participants were identified in a follow-up questionnaire in 2012. Students (n=288) included in the analyses were in the ages of 14–15.

Results. Sixty-six girls and no boys were identified as intervention participants. They reported higher levels of depressive symptoms, lower personal relative affluence, more sexual harassment victimization and less peer support compared to female non-participants (n=222). Intervention participants were more likely to attend schools with a higher proportion of low parental education levels and a lower proportion of students graduating with a diploma.

Conclusions. The developers of the intervention originally intended the program to be universal or selective, but it was implemented as targeted in these schools. It is important for school administrations to adhere to program fidelity when it comes to what students it is aimed for. Implications for effectivenss trials of cognitive-behavioural interventions in the school setting is discussed.

Dimensions of Peer Sexual Harassment Victimization and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescence: A Longitudinal Cross-Lagged Study in a Swedish Sample2016In: Journal of Youth and Adolescence, ISSN 0047-2891, E-ISSN 1573-6601, Vol. 45, no 5, p. 858-873Article in journal (Refereed)

The purpose of this study was to use a feminist theoretical framework to test competing models in respect of the direction of the relationships between dimensions of peer sexual harassment victimization and dimensions of depressive symptoms from ages 14 to 16 in adolescents. The study also aimed to investigate gender differences in these pathways. Cross-lagged models were conducted using a three-wave (2010, 2011 and 2012) longitudinal study of 2330 students (51 % females) from Sweden, adjusted for social background. Girls subjected to sexual harassment in grade seven continued to experience sexual harassment the following 2 years.

A Distributed Range Query Framework for Internet of Things2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the rapid development of information technology, applications referring to the Internet of things are booming. Applications that gather information from sensors and affect the context environment with actuators can provide customized and intelligent behaviour to users. These applications have become widely used nowadays in daily life and have initiated the multi-dimensional range query demand referring to the Internet of things. As the data information is fully distributed and the devices like sensors, mobile phones, etc., has limited resources and finite energy, supporting efficient range query is a tough challenge. In this paper, we have proposed a distributed range query framework for Internet of things. In order to save energy costs and reduce the network traffic, we suggest a reporting data range mechanism in the sensing peers, which choose to report a data range and report again only when the peer senses an abnormal data instead of the common moving data method. In addition, we selected some strong peers to be used as the super peers to create a data index by collecting the reporting data range, which will be used for performing range queries. The study has shown that our proposal framework could reduce resource costs in the less strong peers like sensors and mobile phones, and reduce network traffic among all the peers within the network, as well as support a range query function. According the evaluation results, the reporting data range method could greatly reduce the data migration times and save energy costs, and the data index could significantly reduce accessing unnecessary peers and diminish the network traffic.

A distributed range query framework for the internet of things2015In: 2015 18th International Conference on Intelligence in Next Generation Networks, ICIN 2015, IEEE conference proceedings, 2015, p. 83-88Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The range query referring to the Internet of Things is a tough challenge since the data information is fully distributed. In order to support efficient range query, most existing approaches focused on designing the data management mechanism, which ensures that the similar data are stored nearby within the network. However, it will introduce large extra overhead to each peer in the Internet of Things especially when the peers generate data frequently. In this paper, a distributed range query framework is proposed, which consists of three core modules, reporting and indexing module, along with a query executor. The reporting module learns the sensed data and predicts a data range in which the coming future data is likely to be. Only the abnormal data that exceeds the data range will be detected, which greatly reduces the frequency and quantity of data migration in these data management mechanism. The indexing module is responsible for collecting reported data information and establishing data index used for responding to query request. Based on the above two modules, the range query is processed by the query executor. The experimental results show that this proposal could support range query effectively and efficiently, with load balance among the peers at the same time. © 2015 IEEE.

    Recent developments in palladium-catalyzed oxidative cascade carbocyclization2017In: ACS Catalysis, ISSN 2155-5435, E-ISSN 2155-5435, Vol. 7, no 10, p. 7051-7063Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this Perspective, we describe recent advances on Pd-catalyzed oxidative cascade carbocyclizations. These cascade processes enable efficient construction of the molecular complexity and structural diversity of carbocyclic compounds via introducing diverse functionalities concomitant with multiple C-C bond-formations in one-pot operations. In many cases, these processes are facilitated by Pd-catalysts alone, while cocatalysis by combination of Pd catalyst and other catalysts are also discussed, since they represent a new entry to address the preparation of functionalized cyclic compounds with high efficiency and selectivity.

Short Paper: 'A peer to peer security protocol for the internet of things': Secure communication for the sensiblethings platform2015In: 2015 18th International Conference on Intelligence in Next Generation Networks, ICIN 2015, 2015, p. 154-156Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, the Internet of Things is able to provide more advanced services to people, which connects a variety of devices, systems and applications. However, it covers a variety of devices, protocols and applications, which makes it much more complex. In the main application areas, wireless sensor networks with a frequent but short communication character, it requires an efficient and flexible protocol to protect the information. To protect the traffic of the Internet of Things is the focal point of this research work. Although many protocols for the Internet have been put forward, it is still not enough to meet the increasingly complex requirements from applications. Many of them are not efficient enough to adapt the device diversity and timely communication environment. This paper is trying to address this problem, by proposing a peer-to-peer security protocol to satisfy this varied environment. Secure communication is implemented on an open sourced platform for the Internet of Things. Its less handshake in future sessions and dynamic security level adjustment feature satisfies the realistic demand on this platform. Finally, with a comparison test, the result shows that the proposed protocol is efficient to meet the specific goals and applicable for the Internet of Things applications. © 2015 IEEE.

    Abstract [en]

With the rapid development of the Internet connected technologies and applications, people are keen on embracing the convenience and practi-‐‑ calities they brings. As all kinds of technologies improve, the Internet of Things matures and is able to provide more advanced services to people, which connects a variety of devices, systems and applications beyond traditional machine-‐‑to-‐‑machine. However, it covers a variety of devices, protocols and applications, which makes it much more complex than a normal network. Nevertheless, equipped with appropriate security solutions, the Internet of Things is promising to bring us more conven-‐‑ iences and be widely applied in our daily life. And like the main appli-‐‑ cation areas, wireless sensor networks with a frequent but short com-‐‑ munication character, it requires an efficient and flexible protocol to protect the information. To protect the traffic of the Internet of Things is the focal point of this research work. Although many protocols for the Internet have been put forward, it is still not enough to meet the increas-‐‑ ingly complex requirements from applications. This research work is trying to address this problem, by proposing a peer-‐‑to-‐‑peer security protocol to satisfy this varied environment. Secure communication is implemented on an open sourced platform for the Internet of Things. The philosophy of the platform it implemented on is also inherited to this protocol and the implementation. It avoids unnecessary handshakes between entities, which makes it more efficient in a wireless sensor network. Modulariza-‐‑ tion and unit test are adapted in implementation to enhance the robust of the system. Its dynamic security level adjustment feature satisfies the realistic demand on one platform this protocol is implemented on. Finally, with a comparison test and an analysis using the BAN logic, the result shows that the proposed protocol is efficient to meet the specific goals and applicable for the platform.

Efficient database management based on complex association rules2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The large amount of data accumulated by applications is stored in a database. Because of the large amount, name conflicts or missing values sometimes occur. This prevents certain types of analysis. In this work, we solve the name conflict problem by comparing the similarity of the data, and changing the test data into the form of a given template dataset. Studies on data use many methods to discover knowledge from a given dataset. One popular method is association rules mining, which can find associations between items. This study unifies the incomplete data based on association rules. However, most rules based on traditional association rules mining are item-to-item rules, which is a less than perfect solution to the problem. The data recovery system is based on complex association rules able to find two more types of association rules, prefix pattern-to-item, and suffix pattern-to-item rules. Using complex association rules, several missing values are filled in. In order to find the frequent prefixes and frequent suffixes, this system used FP-tree to reduce the time, cost and redundancy. The segment phrases method can also be used for this system, which is a method based on the viscosity of two words to split a sentence into several phrases. Additionally, methods like data compression and hash map were used to speed up the search.

The effect of molecular weight on the performance of paper strength-enhancing polymers2001In: Journal of Pulp and Paper Science (JPPS), ISSN 0826-6220, Vol. 27, no 5, p. 145-151Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The influence of dextran molecular weight (77 000 to 2 000 000) on the strength of fibre-fibre bonds was investigated. A series of cationic dextrans with different molecular weights, from 77 000 to 2 000 000, was prepared and the adsorption behaviour on fibre was characterized. The maximum amount of adsorbed dextran increased with decreasing molecular weight, while the adsorbed layer thickness on colloidal silica increased with increasing molecular weight. At saturation coverage, the molecular weight of dextran did nor affect the tensile strength of handsheets made from unbeaten bleached kraft pulp. The strength improvement with polymer addition did not correspond to increased optical bonded area (opacity). The external surface of fibre accessible to dextran of molecular weight 2 000 000 was estimated as 35 m(2)/g.

The effect of charge density and hydrophobic modification on dextran-based paper strength enhancing polymers2000In: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal, ISSN 0283-2631, E-ISSN 2000-0669, Vol. 15, no 5, p. 440-445Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The dry tensile strengths of bleached kraft pulp handsheets were measured as functions of the cationic charge density and hydrophobic substituents on 2 million Dalton dextran adsorbed onto the fibers before sheet making. The charge density controlled the maximum amount of dextran that could be adsorbed by the fibers which, in turn, influenced tensile strength. The lower the charge density, the higher were both the dextran adsorption capacity of fibers and the tensile strength of the resulting paper. Butanoic and hexanoic acid when condensed onto dextran gave hydrophobic domains which lowered paper strength linearly with hydrophobic content. An extension to the Page equation gave a semi-empirical model which predicted the major effects of hydrophobic substitution on paper strength.

Catalytic Enantioselective Synthesis of Bicyclic Lactam N,S-Acetals in One Pot by Cascade Transformations2019In: European Journal of Organic Chemistry, ISSN 1434-193X, E-ISSN 1099-0690, Vol. 2019, no 29, p. 4649-4657Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A versatile strategy for the enantioselective synthesis of bicyclic lactam N,S-acetals by one-pot cascade transformations is disclosed. The transformation of readily available substrates is promoted by chiral amines and creates bicyclic or tricyclic lactam N,S-acetals with high chemo- and stereoselectivity (up to > 99.5:0.5 dr and > 99 % ee) in one-pot operations.

Acellular vaccines for preventing whooping cough in children2012In: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ISSN 1469-493X, E-ISSN 1469-493X, no 3, article id CD001478Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    A B S T R A C T

    Background

Routine use of whole-cell pertussis (wP) vaccines was suspended in some countries in the 1970s and 1980s because of concerns about adverse effects. Following such action, there was a resurgence of whooping cough. Acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines, containing purified or recombinant Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis) antigens, were developed in the hope that they would be as effective, but less reactogenic than the whole-cell vaccines.

    Objectives

To assess the efficacy and safety of acellular pertussis vaccines in children.

    Search methods

We searched theCochrane Register ofControlledTrials (CENTRAL) (TheCochrane Library 2011, Issue 4)which contains theCochrane Acute Respiratory Infections Group’s Specialised Register, MEDLINE (1950 to December week 4, 2011), EMBASE (1974 to January 2012), Biosis Previews (2009 to January 2012), and CINAHL (2009 to January 2012).

    Selection criteria

We selected double-blind randomised efficacy and safety trials of aP vaccines in children up to six years old, with active follow-up of participants and laboratory verification of pertussis cases.

    Data collection and analysis

Two review authors independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias in the studies. Differences in trial design precluded a meta-analysis of the efficacy data. We pooled the safety data from individual trials using a random-effects meta-analysis model.

    Main results

We included six efficacy trials with a total of 46,283 participants and 52 safety trials with a total of 136,541 participants. Most of the safety trials did not report the methods for random sequence generation, allocation concealment and blinding, which made it difficult to assess the risk of bias in the studies. The efficacy of multi-component (three) vaccines varied from 84% to 85% in preventing typical whooping cough (characterised by 21 or more consecutive days of paroxysmal cough with confirmation of B. pertussis infection by culture, appropriate serology or contact with a household member who has culture-confirmed pertussis), and from 71% to 78% in Acellular vaccines for preventing whooping cough in children (Review) preventing mild pertussis disease (characterised by seven or more consecutive days of cough with confirmation of B. pertussis infection by culture or appropriate serology). In contrast, the efficacy of one- and two-component vaccines varied from 59% to 75% against typical whooping cough and from 13% to 54% against mild pertussis disease. Multi-component acellular vaccines are more effective than low-efficacy whole-cell vaccines, but may be less effective than the highest-efficacy whole-cell vaccines. Most systemic and local adverse events were significantly less common with aP vaccines than with wP vaccines for the primary series as well as for the booster dose.

    Authors’ conclusions

Multi-component (three) aP vaccines are effective and show less adverse effects than wP vaccines for the primary series as well as for booster doses.

Acellular vaccines for preventing whooping cough in children

Whooping cough (pertussis) can be a serious respiratory infection. Vaccines made from killed whole Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis) were developed but they could cause severe neurologic disorders such as convulsions, encephalopathy and hypotonic-hyporesponsive episodes, as well as minor adverse events, such as anorexia, drowsiness, fever, irritability and fretfulness, prolonged crying, vomiting, and injection site pain/redness/swelling/induration. This led to a fall in immunisation rates, which resulted in an increase in the incidence of whooping cough. Acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines (containing purified or recombinant B. pertussis antigens) were developed in the hope that they would be as effective but less reactogenic than the whole-cell pertussis (wP) vaccines.

This updated review included six efficacy trials with a total of 46,283 participants and 52 safety trials with a total of 136,541 participants. The efficacy of multi-component (three) acellular vaccines varied from 84% to 85% in preventing typical whooping cough (characterised by 21 or more consecutive days of paroxysmal cough with confirmation of B. pertussis infection by culture, appropriate serology or contact with a household member who has culture-confirmed pertussis) and from 71% to 78% in preventing mild pertussis disease (characterised by seven or more consecutive days of cough with confirmation of B. pertussis infection by culture or appropriate serology). One- and two-component acellular vaccines were less effective. Most systemic and local adverse events were significantly less common with aP than with wP vaccines for the primary series as well as for the booster dose. This review found that multi-component vaccines which contain three or more aP components are effective, with less adverse effects than wP vaccines.
