    Abstract [en]

    Industrial Internet-of-things (IIoT) networks have recently gained enormous attention because of the huge advantages they offer. A typical IIoT network consists of a large number of sensor and actuator devices distributed randomly in an industrial area to automate various processes, where a major goal is to collect data from all these devices and to process it centrally at an aggregator. However, for an efficient system operation, a proficient scheduling mechanism is required due to its direct association with performance parameters. Many existing techniques such as time division multiple access (TDMA), do not perform well in industrial environments due to their stringent timeliness requirements. In this paper, we propose a medium access control (MAC) layer protocol for node scheduling in  a scenario where some devices may not be in one-hop range of the aggregator and thus renders a multi-hop mechanism  inevitable. A discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) model is proposed to characterize the transmission of multi-tier nodes and the analytical expressions  of throughput and latency are derived. It has been oberved that the delay scales linearly with the number of nodes which are away not in one-hop distance of the aggregator. Numerical simulations have been performed to validate the theoretical results.

    Abstract [en]

    Predictive decision theory explains how humans should make decisions in practice given that they are not always perfect rational decision makers. Based on the prescriptive decision theory, this study addresses criticism of universal decision making models for supplier selections which have the notion of being used uniquely in all types of supplier choice situations. Issues raised are whether this performance is correct and how a dynamic decision-making model could create a more customized decision-making model which does not add much responsibility to the decision maker's judgment. A case study at Logosol, a small industrial company identifies by process mapping a complex supplier selection process consisting of three steps; prototype creation, null-series and production, based on test manufacturing. The supplier selection process is used as the basis for the creation of a dynamic decision making model. Dynamic decision-making models have the basic principle of learning from a decision and using that information in the next decision, which is considered useful in the business case as they not only use test manufacturing for product testing but also for collecting information about the supplier. Finally, the created dynamic decision model shows that universal decision-making models cannot be used in many complex supplier selection processes involving a plurality of steps. The model must be adapted to the company's individual process, however the identification method or some parts of the model used in this study may be used to create a dynamic decision model for other companies or organizations.

    Abstract [en]

    Artificial intelligence is a concept based on making machines think. The disciplines that study this range from behavioral science to computer science and mathematics. The different approaches have contributed to categorize the field of artificial intelligence into different areas and the definitions of artificial intelligence are many. The aim of this study has been to investigate how IT consulting companies define and position themselves against artificial intelligence. To achieve this goal, literature on the subject has been studied to define artificial intelligence and to categorize the different areas of artificial intelligence. With the help of these areas, a survey has been conducted with IT consultancies as a target group. It turned out that most respondents work with different types of algorithms based on logic computations and big data, which differ from those areas experts believe will be significant for the future of AI. Both experts and the IT-consultancies are convinced that in the future neural networks will be one of the fields with greatest potential.

    This paper presents an ongoing case study within the ISERV research project at Mid Sweden University, examining the process of changes in the records management process when paper-based turns digital and also examining the challenges in the change within the profession of the archival domain. The findings of this study will contribute to an understanding of the creation of sustainable e-services where the information will continue to be usable, with an archival requirement perspective over time.

    Machine learning and Multi-criteria decision analysis in healthcare: A comparison of machine learning algorithms for medical diagnosis2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Medical records consist of a lot of data. Nevertheless, in today’s digitized society it is difficult for humans to convert data into information and recognize hidden patterns. Effective decision support tools can assist medical staff to reveal important information hidden in the vast amount of data and support their medical decisions. The objective of this thesis is to compare five machine learning algorithms for clinical diagnosis. The selected machine learning algorithms are C4.5, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) and Naïve Bayes classifier. First, the machine learning algorithms are applied on three publicly available datasets. Next, the Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to evaluate which algorithms are more suitable than others for medical diagnosis. Evaluation criteria are chosen with respect to typical clinical criteria and were narrowed down to five; sensitivity, specificity, positive predicted value, negative predicted value and interpretability. Given the results, Naïve Bayes and SVM are given the highest AHP-scores indicating they are more suitable than the other tested algorithm as clinical decision support. In most cases kNN performed the worst and also received the lowest AHP-score which makes it the least suitable algorithm as support for medical diagnosis.

    Quantifying Leanness combining Value Stream Mapping with a Data Envelopment Analysis based method: A case study at a Swedish Logistics Company2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    By describing companies through their processes it is possible to get a well-established overall understanding of the company. This case study is based on the daily operations of a small logistics company specialized in international transportation. We perform Value Stream Mapping in order to propose improvements leading to reduced processing time. Afterwards a Data Envelopment Analysis based method is used to calculate the leanness score of the current system and estimate how much the leanness can increase by the proposed improvements. Results show that waste produced by bad workplace layout and over-processing can be eliminated. A suggested solution is to introduce standardized processes and to invest in technical instruments in order to automate production. According to this study the business is 45 percent lean at present and could with simple improvements soon become 61 percent lean and finally reach an ideal state at 100 percent leanness if production is automated.

    Eremit är en grupp bestående utav flera erfarna producenter, regissörer och fotografer som utför jobb i hela Sverige inom film och reklam. Målet med projektet har varit att utveckla en webbplats åt gruppen, på vilken de kan publicera sina färdiga produktioner. Webbplatsen i sig har utvecklats med innehållshanteringssystemet WordPress och ett nytt WordPress tema har för ändamålet skapats från grunden för att uppnå önskat utseende. Funktioner på både webbplats och den administrativa sidan har skapats med hjälp av olika tillägg. Temat och de utvalda tilläggen har efter anpassning resulterat i att gruppen själva kan hantera publikation av nytt material på webbplatsen. Rapporten tar även upp hur begreppet responsiv webbdesign har bemötts i projektet, och hur hela webbplatsen har utvecklats för att vara presentabel i alla olika enheter och skärmstorlekar med hjälp av CSS och Media Queries.

    Today at various locations and factories we have a lot of sensors and actuators that interact with each other and a control-unit. The control-unit is in most cases a cloud-based solution. This is in most cases a good solution. However, there is a rise in expected devices and sensors which will most likely be too much data for the existing network to handle. This paper researches if a fog-unit might be the solution to this problem. The setup of the fog-unit in the network is a unit between the cloud and the sensors and actuators. In this paper the fog-unit and sensors/actuators have been emulated on Raspberry Pi’s. The sensors are emulated using python-threads and communicate with the fog-unit using the UDP-based protocol CoAP and the fog communicates to the cloud using the TCP- based protocol MQTT. After a prototype was built it using said Raspberry Pi’s it was sent through a few measurements in the fields of bandwidth, cloud-utilization and response times. This was later compared to another setup without the fog-unit as the control setup. The result with this kind of setup was that a fog-unit lowers the cloud-utilization and use of bandwidth, however it increases the round trip time of a request from the cloud by a large amount. Which leads to the conclusion that a fog-unit in this kind of setup might be a good network solution if the response time to the cloud isn’t important.

    When a crisis occurs many people have to act and help to solve the situation in the best way possible. The importance of the help of volunteers has grown considerably lately and volunteers as a support in situations of crisis has become a more common phenomenon. The change is due to the fact that there has been a shifting in responsibilities and some of the work that earlier were a part of the government controlled businesses is now partially under the responsibility of private businesses.

    For the authorities there are laws that regulates what documentation needs to be preserved to cater for the demands the requirements for keep public documents. When parts of the government controlled business makes a shift and instead are partially handled by private businesses, does that mean that there are no longer any legal requirements regarding the documentation? And how does this affect the public’s ability to gain insight into work done in a crisis situation?

    The purpose of this study is to describe volunteer work in FRG looks in a crisis and how their work is documented and then examine how the documentation that is being done today stands in relation to the legal demands and future needs and desires.

    In the work with this essay, much of the work has been done i literature studies. The information collected has been supplemented by interview material. The interviews has been conducted with a FRG representative and a representative from the municipality to gain insight into how their work and routines look like in practice In the study potential deficiencies in handling documentation was found. This has not formed a problem in the FRG that was interviewed, but the knowledge in the field suggests that the deficiencies could form a problem when the work is put into practice.

    Abstract [en]

    In today´s society large quantities of goods are shipped both domestic in Sweden as well as across borders. The increasing flow of goods require higher demands on the capacity of the infrastructure and at the same time think and act for a sustainable environment. The overall aim of the study is to highlight development areas for cargo freight by railway. The more specific goals of the study is to identify what enablers that is needed when to establish an intermodal terminal that will handle break-bulk cargo directly from railway, and what barriers that might be. To achieve the aim and goal a qualitative study was conducted with interviews as primal data. Studying the market prerequisites and conducting a competitive intelligence and a benchmark conducted the result. In the result, the interviews and the examined documents has ben compiled, these data has been the basis for the analysis and conclusion. Large parts of the collected data indicated that break bulk cargo handling in intermodal terminals is currently something that is not offered and it is not considered to be economically viable. However, the study also revealed that break bulk cargo handling is a desired service from the business sector as it is regarded as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, something that the business sector appreciate. To cope with this kind of cargo handling and transportation more research is needed, better cooperation between the private- and the public sector as well as infrastructure changes.

    Expansion is a challenge that many companies end up in, and an important factor in an expansion is the customers and how the company will do to increase the customer base. This study focuses on the company and to help companies identify new customers. The study uses multi criteria decision analysis to identify potential customers to companies. The purpose of this study is to show that multi criteria decision analysis can be effectively used by companies in identifying new customers and also used as a basis for expansion. By using a case study at Stort AB, a small logistics company, the TOPSIS multi criteria decision method can be tested as a method for identifying new customers. With the help from the employees of the company, participating in the study in the form of decision makers, criteria’s and weights relevant to the company can be determined. Data, criteria and requirements are taken from Stort AB and the Statistiska centralbyrån in order to implement TOPSIS and further information is collected from Stort AB in order to answer questions such as: how much resources are required by the company to cope with expansion and how many new customers do the company need to achieve the desired expansion. The study shows that TOPSIS is a good method of ranking, especially when the problem contains many options. From TOPSIS, a ranking of all potential customers is obtained based on the company's weighting, and it can be read which customer that will suit the company's criteria best. However, the data available for this study were inadequate to provide some accurate answers to the company, but the study provides a good picture for the company how it will look and what will be required of them in an expansion.

    The handling and utilization of products is an important factor in organization that strive towards and optimal operation, where different methods in the handling of products have a direct effect on the organizations results. This is a case study where a sawmill with a process that is repeated for each new order in the sorting- and packaging of timber. For each scenario, an operator is faced with a decision, where the result of the organization is directly affected by the decision that is made. The decision in question consist of an amount of trays of timber that must be combined in order to meet a constraint in the height of each delivered package. The purpose with this study is to investigate how optimization combined with process mapping can help the organization in maximizing its utilization of products. The study was performed with a mixed methods approach, where a process map was developed to gain understanding of the process. An optimization model was developed and run given collected data. In the process mapping it became clear that for each combination of trays, there is a downgrading in length and/or quality, which affects the total value of the combination. A comparison of the results between the optimization models’ and operators’ solutions showed a theoretical saving of 3 655 435 kr annually, and an increase in product utilization of 3,81 percentage in this process. The results of the study shows that optimization combined with process mapping is effective in the terms of minimizing costs dependent on a decision maker.

    Abstract [en]

    Systems analysis allows quantitative empirical testing of models that exist in the study of public policy. Simulation and visualisation techniques can help policy makers to reduce uncertainties on the possible impacts of policies. This paper presents a new tool for systems modelling and simulation of policy problems to support the problem analysis, the design of policy options and impact assessment activities. The tool facilitates the cognitive activity of representing complex mental models using system dynamics simulation modelling by defining standards and a procedure for policy modelling. We propose a new policy-oriented problem structuring method (PSM), the 'labelled causal mapping'. The method supports scenario-based dynamic simulation and provides graphical representations of the involved actors, key variables, control flows and causal dependencies in a policy decision situation. A web-based tool prototype has been implemented in a Node.js environment. Two real policy problems are presented for demonstration of the use of the prototype.

    Abstract [en]

    Big data is a term used to describe large amounts of data. The aim of the work has been to develop an efcient system that analyzes large quantities of data. Which in this case is the transport of wood between forest and industry. By man- aging this amount of data, the user can quickly receive information about the lo- cation of the timber and compare historical data regarding it. This report de- scribes the work of implementing a dashboard that compiles "Big data" in real time and in a comprehensible way. The project uses scrum as a project tool. This means an iterative development where you work towards smaller sub-goals. The report also includes evaluations conducted with a focus on usability and also a compilation of research within the subject of data visualization and BI. The evalu- ation indicated that by using the developed dashboard, it took a standard com- puter user an average of 3.4 seconds to fnd the requested information. Before, programming skills would be required and it would take much longer to obtain corresponding information.

    Abstract [en]

    Detecting and capturing 3D human structures from the intensity-based image sequences is an inherently arguable problem, which attracted attention of several researchers especially in real-time activity recognition (Real-AR). These Real-AR systems have been significantly enhanced by using depth intensity sensors that gives maximum information, in spite of the fact that conventional Real-AR systems are using RGB video sensors. This study proposed a depth-based routine-logging Real-AR system to identify the daily human activity routines and to make these surroundings an intelligent living space. Our real-time routine-logging Real-AR system is categorized into two categories. The data collection with the use of a depth camera, feature extraction based on joint information and training/recognition of each activity. In-addition, the recognition mechanism locates, and pinpoints the learned activities and induces routine-logs. The evaluation applied on the depth datasets (self-annotated and MSRAction3D datasets) demonstrated that proposed system can achieve better recognition rates and robust as compare to state-of-the-art methods. Our Real-AR should be feasibly accessible and permanently used in behavior monitoring applications, humanoid-robot systems and e-medical therapy systems.

    To fully utilize multicore processors in Node.js applications, the applications must be programmed as multiple processes. Parallel execution can increase the throughput of data and hence lower data buffering for inter-process communica- tion. Node.js’s asynchronous programming model and interface to the operating system make for convenient tools that are well suited for multiprocess program- ming. However, the run-time behavior of asynchronous processes results in non-deterministic processor load and data flow. That means the performance gain from increasing concurrency depends on both the application’s run-time state and the hardware’s capacity for parallel execution. The objective of this thesis work is to explore the effects of increasing parallel- ism in Node.js applications by measuring the differences in the amount of data buffering when distributed processes run of a varying number of cores with a fixed rate of asynchronously arriving data. The goal is to simulate and examine the run-time behavior of three basic multiprocess Node.js application architec- tures in order to discuss and evaluate software parallelism techniques. The three architectures are: pipelined nodes for temporally dependent processing, a vector of nodes for data parallel processing, and a grid of nodes for one-to-many branched processing. To simulate and visualize the run-time behavior, a simulation environment us- ing multiple Node.js processes is created. The simulation is agent-based, where the agent is an abstraction for a specific data flow within the application. The simulation models and visualizes all of the data flows within a distributed appli- cation where processes communicate asynchronously via messages through sockets. The results show that performance can increase when distributing Node.js ap- plications across multiple processes running in parallel on multicore hardware. There are however diminishing returns as the number of active processes equal or exceed the number of cores. A good rule of thumb seem to be to distribute the decoupled logic across as many processes as there are cores. The interaction between asynchronous processes is on the whole made very simple with Node.js. Although running multiple instances of Node.js requires more memory, the distributed architecture has the potential to increase performance by nearly as many times as the number of cores in the processor.

    Abstract [en]

    This report discusses a fictitious Internet Service Provider (ISP) that wants to evaluate whether the Netconf protocol can be used to configure VPN services. Netconf is used in conjunction with Yang, a data modeling language that is used to describe the features that can be configured on a particular network device. Netconf/Yang is evaluated by developing a solution focused on the configuration of MPLS Layer 3 VPNs. Traditional methods for network device configuration are using the CLI and expect based scripts. One purpose of the evaluation is to determine if Netconf/Yang can be used instead. To increase the credibility of the results, a network architect with industry experience has been involved by setting requirements for the Netconf/Yang solution. The ISP in question uses routers from both Juniper and Cisco, something that the proposed solution takes into account. Development has been done against the virtual routers Juniper vMX 17.1R1.8 and Cisco IOS XRv 6.1.2. The proposed solution involves creating script input data that describes a L3VPN in a vendor neutral way. The input data is validated against a custom yang model to ensure that it follows the expected format. The data is then used as an argument to three different scripts that either tests, adds or deletes a L3VPN based on the input data. The main conclusion is that Netconf/Yang can replace configuration using the CLI, given that the desired features have been implemented in the yang models of the network devices.

    Abstract [en]

    Decisions and decision-making are a major part of any organization   today. New technology and less cultural boundaries have grown new competence and knowledge into organizations. As a direct consequence of knowledge and technology, new opportunities to establish new operations in other markets and countries have become more realistic than before.   

    It has previously been researched how different cultures and backgrounds may affect an organisation's decision process. The researchers have studied the difference in culture, history and environment and how that affects decision-making.  The purpose of this report is to provide an analysis of an organisation's decision-making process between two countries that are very close in culture, heritage and social behaviour. The research is done within five categories within decision theory; Clear Objectives, Procedural Rationality, Communication, Management Inclusion and how an organizational makes decisions and assign resources. The study has been conducted at Knowit in Sundsvall, Sweden, and with the same organisation in Oslo, Norway.

    Data has been collected through interviews, surveys and observations. The outcome of the survey shows that there are both similarities and differences between the organisations in Sweden and Norway in all decision categories. Sweden has clear targets and defined purpose from the beginning of the decision-making process. In Norway, management includes employees in more of the decision-making processes than what Sweden's leaders do. Both countries use communication channels that work for both co-workers and managers. It has been stated by Knowit Sweden and Norway that the organization takes democratic decisions, but this is reflected more in Norway than what it is in Sweden.

    I detta dokument gestaltas arbetet med att utveckla ett internt administrationssystem

    till e-handelsföretaget Ehandelssupport. Detta är ett uppdrag i skarpt

    läge och grundas i företagets behov av att få bättre och mer användaranpassade

    webbapplikationer som syftar till att underlätta, förenkla och effektivisera vissa

    frekvent återkommande arbetsuppgifter. Detta innefattar exempelvis en applikation

    som kan generera prislappar baserat på produktinformation som lagras i

    webbshoppen Alfahobbys databas. Det inkluderar också en användarvänlig och

    effektiv lösning för att kunna skapa och skicka ut digitala nyhetsbrev till företagets

    kunder. Den färdiga applikationen för prislapparna uppfyller de grundönskemål

    om funktionalitet som företaget hade på denna samtidigt som den nya

    lösningen medför en rejäl tidseffektivisering i handhavandet med att skapa prislapparna

    eftersom datat hämtas direkt från databasen via ett nyimplementerat

    API. Applikationen använder också ramverket jQuery Mobile vilket stödjer responsiv

    webbdesign. Arbetet med lösningen för de digitala nyhetsbreven resulterade

    i ett förslag till företaget som innebär att börja använda verktyget Mailigen,

    detta skulle både förenkla det redaktionella arbetet och förbättra användbarheten

    för kunderna exempelvis genom att nyhetsbreven får en responsiv

    webbdesign. Några områden för eventuell framtida vidareutveckling är exempelvis

    att för applikationen för prislappar lägga till ytterligare kontroller som

    förhindrar att användaren skriver in fel värden i vissa funktioner. När det gäller

    nyhetsbreven skulle fortsatt forskning rörande möjligheten att kunna infoga

    produktinformation direkt från webbshoppens databas vara aktuellt.

    Abstract [en]

    Bin packing problem has gained a wide interest in academia and in practice since the problems quickly becomes intractable as the problem grows. In this paper two models are compared: one model that generates exact solutions for bin packing problem and one that uses the same fundamental approach on the problem but extended with a heuristic combination of next-fit and a combinational best-fit. The results proves that the heuristic approach has competitive features of linearity as the problem grows, but still with satisfying optimums in the evaluated instances.

    Abstract [en]

    The range of value added decking and cladding products currently available on the Swedish market is probably greater than ever. Although, there are also both opportunities and threats for further development in this industry sector, the extant research has not addressed this topic. The present paper fills this gap through conducting a qualitative exploratory case study undertaken to describe the structure and macro factors influencing the industry. The study integrates PESTEL (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal) framework with Porter’s Five Forces of Competitive Position. Data for the PESTEL analysis were collected from industry experts and triangulated through secondary sources. Data for the Five Forces analysis were collected through qualitative interviews. The findings indicate that PESTEL factors have neutral or positive influences on the industry, while the Five Forces analysis indicates that the strength of buyers’ power and threats from substitutes may pose future challenges. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the industry has potential for further growth and warrants attention from various players that are not yet involved.

    Abstract [en]

    The work described in this thesis is aimed at comparing Raspberry Pi model 3 B and Arduino Uno with an ESP8266 wifi module to see which one is most suitable to use in a Internet of Things project where data collecting from an sensor, processed and then presented. The method for this comparison is to divide the work. First, price and power consumption will be evaluated. Then, the stability of communication over wifi will be tested. Finally, the time it takes to design a program on the platforms will be measured. The result from the comparison show that the Raspberry Pi is the best choice for this type of Internet of Things projet. However, which platform to choose depends on the specific goals of the project since the platforms are good at different things. A server written in Python communicates with the Raspberry Pi by using socket to socket communication, the Raspberry Pi collects the data from the sensor and then sends it to the server. The server then saves the data in a database by the unit identification number. Then a webpage was designed that presented the data to the user. A usabiity test was done on the webpage and the result from the usability test showed that the test users was satisfied with the usability with the page, exept the choice of colors, which was fiexd.

    Abstract [en]

    Bollnäs Energi is currently in a state where they are evaluating the internal network security within the business. They have come to conclusion that they need to enhance the security of the login process for 380 network devices. The purpose of this project was to retrieve solutions after security requirements set by the company and then to practically implement them in the existing system to verify functionality. The approach for this work has been to gather information about possible solutions and then put them against each other in an evaluation and then implement the solutions that are considered best suited for the business based on the business approach, security and other advantages and disadvantages. In order to finally verify functionality with the business network structure, a practical experiment has been performed. The experiment contains the model types and systems that will be affected by the security implementations. Some configuration documentation has also been created to facilitate the implementation of the existing network in the future. After the evaluations carried out, the RADIUS protocol has been chosen as a solution as it attained the requirements set by the business, there was also individual configuration directly on the network devices that has been made to fulfill some of the requirements. Finally, an anonymous questionnaire has been developed that concerns how personal data will be handled by the new system in order to get statistics about how employees view the implementation from an ethical perspective.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study has been to compare the accuracy of prognosis tools and how well they do with regards to seasonal variation and known deviations in order to decide which method is more suitable for companies with the goal of optimizing their staffing. The study has used Systembolaget as a case to compare two methods of prognosis. Data has been retrieved from Systembolaget and includes the company's sales. The methods that have been compared are Holt-Winters method and regression analysis. This has been done by applying the methods in order to generate a forecast and then evaluating the result through MAPE. Application of these methods was done with Excel and SPSS. The study showed that, under the present circumstances, both methods on average gave equally accurate forecasts. Holt-Winter's method however, forecasted more accurately week by week, while the regression analysis projection on average yielded almost equal percentage error. The conclusion that was generated by the study was that Holt-Winter's method is preferable for companies with this type of sale if the purpose is to generate a weekly accurate forecast. On the other hand, the conclusion may vary if methods are optimized and more data is available.

    Abstract [en]

    In many fields, there is a need for quick analysis of data. As the number of devices connected to the Internet grows, so does the amounts of data generated. The traditional way of analyzing large amounts of data has been by using batch processing, where the already collected data is pro-cessed. This process is time consuming, resulting in another trend emerg-ing: stream processing. Stream processing is when data is processed and stored as it arrives. Because of the velocity, volume and variations in data. Stream processing is best carried out in the main memory, and means processing and storing data as it arrives, which makes it a big challenge. This thesis focuses on developing a framework for the processing and storing of streaming temporal data enabling the data to be analyzed in real time. For this purpose, a server application was created consisting of approximate in-memory data synopsizes, called sketches, to process and store the input data. Furthermore, a client web application was created to query and analyze the data. The results show that the framework can sup-port simple aggregate queries with constant query time regardless to the volume of data. Also, it can process data 6.8 times faster than a traditional database system. All this implies that the system is scalable, at the same time it with a query error vs. memory trade-off. For a distribution of ~3000000 unique items it was concluded that the framework can provide very accurate answers, with an error rate less than 1.1%, for the trendiest data using about 100 times less space than the actual size of the data set.

    Denna rapport handlar om hur författaren, Jessica Karlsson, gick tillväga när

    hon planerade, utförde och färdigställde sitt arbete med gamification-systemet

    For the Win.

    For the Win är ett system som utvecklats av företaget Sverok Admin och som tidigare

    har använts relativt flitigt av företagets kunder, men som enligt de själva

    var i stort behov av upprustning. Därmed blev målet med detta projekt att besvara

    frågan: ”Vad behövs för att gamification-systemet For the Win ska bli mer

    effektivt och mer attraktivt som produkt mot slutkund?”

    För att få fram bra och informativa svar, genomfördes en enkätundersökning

    bland erfarna användare av For the Win och utöver detta utförde författaren

    själv en analys av originalsystemet. Med hjälp av sina handledare hos Sverok

    Admin skapade sedan författaren ett teoretiskt underlag för vidareutvecklingen

    av For the Win. Detta underlag innehöll bland annat summeringar av enkätundersökningen

    och analysen, designskisser, ER- och UML-diagram, samt en väl

    tilltagen kravspecifikation menad att förklara i detalj vad författaren ansåg att

    systemet behövde rustas upp med.

    Systemet ansågs vara såpass illa däran att ett beslut togs om att det var bäst att

    börja om från början. Med det teoretiska underlaget som grund påbörjade författaren

    det enorma arbetet som skulle komma att krävas med att skapa ett helt

    nytt For the Win åt Sverok Admin.

    Dessvärre blev resultatet inte alls som önskat och en hel del avgränsningar fick

    göras innan projektet slutligen avslutades.

    Abstract [en]

    Sogeti is an IT consulting company that’s active in large parts of the world. One of their biggest clients in Sundsvall is SCA Skog. In case of fire risk, SCA parti- cipates in consultation meetings with contractors to determine fire prevention measures. SMHI’s fire forecasts and warnings are a few of the bases that deter- mine when a consultation meeting is to begin. The problem is that the contractor today does not receive an automatic indication of fire risk. The purpose of the project was therefore to investigate SMHI’s services and find a solution to the problem and to find a limit for when a consultation meeting should be initia- ted based on the risk within an area. The solution presented is illustrated by a proof-of-concept model. The work has been carried agile in sprinting. Data has been taken from SMHI for a more detailed documentation over warnings and against MSB for the raw data that is behind fire forecasts so that those can be included in the solution. The project has resulted in an application that supports indication of risk based on a list of coordinates as well as automatic indication to the user’s position. An implementation guide was also created to facilitate a possible further development of the solution. The investigation shows that fire forecasts give a more precise indication of danger, but warnings should not be overlooked, as they indicate a risk of other warnings than fire risk. The solution is only intended to give the contractor an additional tool when making a deci- sion. The responsibility remains with the contractor, but the tool will hopefully allow the right decision to be made.

    Increased complexity and the risk of fragmentized business processes and data in many-to-many relationships is hindering development of interoperability. This study aims at clarify what are the success factors for overcoming issues of business process and data fragmentation in the development of enterprise interoperability in multi relation collaborations. A case study allowed for in-depth understanding of experiences and conditions. Seven deep interviews with actors in the Danish electricity market provided empirical data. A literature study formed the base for the analytical framework. Success factors fell into the categories of general project and change management, business process and information and data.

    Closer Together or Further Apart?: Public administration and archives in the digital age2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The research presented in this thesis is about recordkeeping in the public sector, focusing especially on the relationship between the public administration and its archives, and selected aspects affecting the way this relationship is developing in the digital era. Two research questions are addressed: RQ1: What are ‘archives’ and ‘recordkeeping’ in the digital context and the developing e-government? RQ2: What are the indications of current and future challenges regarding the cooperation between public administration and archives? Six studies resulting in six papers form the basis of the thesis. Each study explores a unique aspect of how current developments, discussions, and decisions affect contemporary understanding and practices regarding archives and recordkeeping. Public records are authoritative information resources, crucial in the everyday lives of citizens. Public recordkeeping develops continuously alongside administrative practices, technological achievements, and political goals. Examples include the development of shared services within the public sector and the involvement of the private sector in public infrastructure projects through outsourcing. These processes are currently affected both by digital technologies, which offer new possibilities to create, use, and preserve records, and by e-government, characterized by the combination of information and communication technologies with organizational change to improve public services and democratic participation. In these processes, existing practices are reviewed and revised, and the concepts of ‘archives’ and ‘recordkeeping’ redefined. The research was pursued using an interpretive approach. The research methods used were concept analysis; discourse analysis; literary warrant analysis; phenomenography; critical theory; and the records continuum model as a theoretical structure. The results shows that common usage of the terms ‘archive’ and ‘recordkeeping’ is fluid and changing, which can make decision-making challenging and affect the relationship between archives and administration. Efforts to develop recordkeeping strategies may be hampered by factors related to the different ways in which the nature and role of archives and recordkeeping are perceived, including differing understandings of related concepts; varying discourses on what an archive (or e-archive) is or should be, and different ways of interpreting legal frameworks and their significance.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implications of an outsourcing policy for public recordkeeping. The research question addressed is: What are the current impediments to create, capture, organize, and pluralize records produced by contractors to whom work has been outsourced?

    Design/methodology/approach

    The paper uses the four dimensions of the Records Continuum Model (RCM) as a sructure for understanding what important aspects of recordkeeping that can be affected by an outsourcing policy, and discuss the consequences for the creation of public archives. An investment project at a Swedish public agency with a far-reaching outsourcing policy in the form of a client-contractor model is used as a case to exemplify the problem.

    Findings

    The findings indicate that the legal framework for recordkeeping needs further development, or clarification as to how it should be interpreted in the outsourcing context. More case studies are needed to provide richer data about recordkeeping challenges arising from outsourcing and further opportunities for theoretical analysis using the Records Continuum Model.

    Originality/value

    The RCM has been used in a first attempt to understand various aspects of records management practices and what principles need to be taken into account when making such significant organizational structural and cultural changes.

    Abstract [en]

    Culture and discourses affect our understanding of the archive in the digital environment: preconceptions, norms and practices developed in a paper-based administration color and limit perceptions of digital archives. It can be difficult to re-imagine the archive in the context of e-Government, and the networked environment, which increases the complexity of archival issues. This is a global problem, because digital records require other measures than paper records. This takes a foundational approach, focusing on openings and closures of concepts surrounding the idea of archives. Critical theory is used as a lens to study illustrations and descriptions of what an ‘e-archive’ is, and how it should be managed.

     

    The analysis is made after three basic principles that the public administration should work towards: (i) a holistic concept of the archive, (ii) a proactive approach to records management, and (iii) striving to integrate the archiving process with the goals and opportunities of e-government.

     

    The result indicates that the lack of ‘closings’: commonly understood principles and a shared definition of an e-archive, may restrict the understanding of archives in digital contexts and constrain the development of their full potential. At the same time, the lack of ‘openings’ toward new ways of thinking about and designing e-archives may narrow the scope of possibilities that the digital formats can offer. ‘Paper minds’ may presuppose a ‘stepwise progression’ of records from ‘active’ to ‘archival’ that is unnecessary in the digital context.

    Det här projektet äger rum på it-konsultföretaget Digitalist. Digitalist skapar och underhåller webbplatser i innehållshanteringssystemet Drupal. Syftet är att implementera ny design på delar av webbplatsen netnod.se. Uppgifterna, även kallade biljetter, utgörs av fem deluppgifter: 1. Att presentera Netnod i siffror i ett block med animationer och där de själva kan fylla i siffror. 2. Att göra så att huvudmenyn återkommer när man skrollar upp. 3. Att styla en sida som presenterar talare med text och bild. 4. Att skapa möjlighet för administratör att välja länk-knappfärg som svart eller vit. 5. Att skapa möjlighet för administratör att välja textfärg som vit eller gul. Först görs teoretiska studier i Drupal och utvecklingsmiljön sätts upp. Biljetterna implementeras sedan i PhpStorm och versionssparas i Git, med en gren för varje uppgift. Innan de publiceras live testas de av först mig och en kollega i en testmiljö, för att slutligen godkännas av kund. I resultatdelen redovisas hur syftet har uppnåtts för respektive biljett. I den slutliga diskussionen lyfts hinder på vägen, och reflektioner kring arbetet. Där behandlas även etiska aspekter inom IT såsom betydelsen av att dela med sig av sin kunskap kollegor emellan, och användbarhet kontra säkerhet i gränssnitt för sajtadministratörer.

    Records appraisal in the digital environment becomes a multi-professional enterprise, undertaken in the line of business, in which non-archivists play a vital role, but appraisal practices are not adjusted to this electronic reality. One aspect of this problem is the use and understanding of terminology. This paper presents a study on the usage of records-related terms in steering documents that affect records appraisal in Sweden. It uses a structured model for the analysis of steering documents. Used data sources are authoritative term databases and terminology report and steering documents from the three levels of regulations, i.e. Legislation and Regulations, Policy decisions and Instructions and Retention decisions steering documents from the Swedish National Archives and Stockholm City Archives, both archival authorities within their jurisdictions. The steering documents represents levels of hierarchical impact and are the foundations upon which appraisal is done and effectuated. Analysis of term frequency show change in vocabulary at level of hierarchy as well as development in time. Analysis of focus, characteristics and common features in definitions of terms show a variety of possible interpretations of the included terms, a result that affects appraisal and underpins a need for common corporate understanding in areas with multi-professional influences. The paper concludes that legal terms have impact on term use at regulation level, which lessens at lower levels, where vocabulary broadens. Difference is found between the two archival institutions studied, especially at decision level. Analysis of focus, characteristics and common features in definitions of terms show a variety of possible interpretations of the included terms, a result that affects appraisal and underpins a need for common corporate understanding in areas with multi-professional influences. An action suggested to mitigate risk is to form Communities of Practice for the task of records appraisal. One part of the task for these communities should be to agree upon shared concepts on used terminology that support electronic records appraisal. This would be a step where everyone involved develop a solid ground for the setting of the scope of appraisal. The idea of introducing Communities of Practice for the records and archives appraisal task is wider than the subject of this article, and should be further developed.

    Abstract [en]

    IPv4 has a limited amount of unique IP addresses and these addresses has at the time of today already run out. This is a major problem which the new protocol, IPv6, with its almost 340 undecillion unique addresses offers a solution to. The purpose of the study is to increase knowledge about IPv6 and to inform the reader about different migration techniques. Among other things it involves detecting differences, pros and cons as well as other valuable information. The questions that is supposed to be answered in the study concerns what the possible obstacles and challenges could be when migrating from IPv4 to IPv6; as well as investigating possible performance differences between the internet protocols with focus on throughput and jitter. The tests will be conducted in two different topologies where the only difference is that different routers will be used, which is a Cisco 1811 and OPNsense. The results from the tests shows that IPv4 has a higher throughput rate on both topologies and that IPv4 suffers from less jitter. The conclusions that has been drawn are that IPv6 packages are routed more efficiently compared to IPv6 with regard to prefixes that reduce routing tables in size. The differences that occurs during the test of jitter are also not significant, and the jitter is probably random jitter. An automated script was developed to ease for the user and save time during configuration. The conclusions that has been drawn are that the script shows to be useful when it comes to saving time when configuring new devices or when migrating to IPv6 where configuration of multi-interface IP address needs to be implemented.

    Abstract [en]

    This study exposed subjects (N=108) to 50 Hz sinusoidal magnetic field at 4 μT. The test was done under blind test conditions, consisting of five stages, including control and exposure stages, each lasting for two minutes. The exposure took place in two stages. The results show, the average heart rate increased due course of the test (p=0.003). In addition, the total power of the heart rate variability (HRV) was statistically significantly lower during exposure stages than control stages. High frequency component of HRV decreases due course of the entire test (p = 0.014).

    Denna studie handlar om en implementering av standardisering och automatisering i mindre organisationer. Jag skapade ett skript i Python som upptäcker uppladdade kalkylblad i en mapp som i sin tur var kopplad till en molnbaserad lösning. När skriptet upptäcker kalkylbladen samlar den nödvändig information och importerar en mall av en faktura. Skriptet fyller efterhand mallen med tidigare samlad information och sparar det i en separat mapp. Det originella kalkylbladet arkiveras för framtida referenser. Resultatet av en bättre, standardiserad arbetsrutin och automatiserat fakturasystem resulterade i en tidsbesparing på över 60% och i samband med det nya systemet vi såg en minskning på 75% av incidenter orsakade av dokumentslarv och miss kommunikation.

    Companies are constantly challenged to maintain but also to expand their market position. According to a study it’s problematic to carry out successful IT-projects. Dependencies, coordination and long term planning are three factors which has shown are difficult to master in bigger projects. The aim with the study is to in- vestigate how these aspects work in one case, through a case study on an IT com- pany. The goal is to contribute with research to the subject of long term planning in IT-projects where agile methods usually is used today. Previous research and theories as project management, agile project management, planning methods, scaling methods, coordination methods and change management are used as a base for the study. An exploratory qualitative study has been performed at the case company, the generated result composes of interviews with personnel from the company. The result showed how the methods and theories where used in the case company mainly focusing on long-term planning and workflows. Generally, the same thoughts where shared among the personnel, but because of the open questions the responder got encouraged to elaborate and explain their opinion leading to new information and aspects even when they agreed on the topic. When analyzing the result, I show that a clear framework, implementing of sim- ple work methods and the project management were all important to be able to conduct long-term planning and handle dependencies in projects. The conclusion was to implement the scaling method SAFe but also to use coordination methods. An important aspect is to include change management processes and theories when implementing or changing something. Further studies suggest that research in this article should be carried out on more companies and studies if the imple- mentation of the agila scaling method SAFe has a positive effect in a company.

    Waiting lines is something people experience every day but many  people still hate them especially at grocery stores. For many years, the manual barcode reader has been optimal solution to deal with waiting lines at grocery stores. But, recently, Amazon and Hypercity have  shown that it could be more effective to use mobile self – checkout services to remove waiting lines. In Sweden, the idea of having a mobile self – checkout service has not yet reached out to the larger part of the market. There is, therefore, possible to benefit from introducing a mobile self – checkout service before the competitions start to move. The purpose of this study has, therefore, been to design a mobile  self – checkout service for grocery stores which fulfills the user  experiences better than available self - checkout services. The research has been conducted through a case study, this has been done to  understand the depth of the customers’ user experiences. The result has shown that people don’t like to spend too much time learning a new system and want to be competent at carrying out tasks without too much effort. The result concludes that users have high requirements for efficiency, this is because they want to perform their intended tasks without having to waste much time. The users desire to carry out their tasks with as few steps as possible. If possible, the users want tasks to be completed similar to Amazons 1 – Click technique which allows  customers to make online purchases with a single click.

    The purpose with this study is to show how the subjective uncertainty analysis can be applied to the cost estimates and examine how the attitudes towards risk budgeting of construction projects works. Biogas Mellannorrland is based on a case study and focuses on four location options for the biogas plant. For each option, a cost estimate in form of a fixed cost and variable cost elements, where the latter are uncertain. Pearson-Tukey method have been applied as a method to estimating subjective probabilities. An assumption is made so that the uncertain costs are normally distributed, where the parameters’ mean and standard deviation collected from respondents indicating percentiles at 5% and 95% for doubtful cost elements. In order to identify the project managers risk attitude, the risk premium method will be used to calculate where the expected value is produced by Pearson-Tukey method. The expected value is subtracted with certainty equivalent, which consist of the budgeted amount. The study was conducted through interviews in order to obtain the costs and the subjective probabilities. The study results show that it is difficult to determine which option is the best, or the worst, by just looking at the expected value. The risk premium shows that each option is a risk averse choice for the project managers, since the risk premium was greater than zero.

    The municipality of Hultsfred is just about to bring over its access points to a new system that will handle these. In associate with this, they have had the desire to set up an open network that staff and students can use for their private devices instead of taking from their own mobile surf. Here has a survey been done at Albäcksskolan, where i have looked at how this affects access points, when more wireless devices join them. A spectrum analysis have also been done to optimize which channels that the access points use. The open network has been limited to 3Mb/s per user and this speed have been evaluated if it is enough for the daily tasks. A map over the wireless coverage area have been developed to see if this can be improved. There was a very small increase in the number of units and the impact on the access points was therefore not particularly high. It is estimated that the access points are not affected to the point so that they need to strengthen with more or better access points. The spectrum analysis shows constant interference on three channels in one place in the school, and as a solution, these channels will not be used there. The speed limitation on the open network is judged to be sufficient for the daily tasks such as e-mail and surfing the net. The wireless coverage  in Albäcksskolan is good, but some improvements can be made, for example remove some of the access points that are overkill and move them to places that need some extra coverage, as well as move some of the access points to optimize coverage further.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper reports upon the deliverables and learnings from a project within decision analysis for participatory planning and policy analysis on the municipal level. The project aimed to develop and utilize an online multicriteria decision analysis tool for evaluations of policy alternatives with respect to municipal commercial development policies, acknowledging the objectives and preferences from various local and national stakeholders. The tool itself relied solely on that the users supplied cardinal ranking statements in the appraisal of alternatives and in the ranking of criteria and the surrounding method has been used in three cases. In each case, several significant insights obtained in the decision-modelling workshops were emphasized by the participants. The better understanding of the general decision situation, preference structures, and possible strategies was highly appreciated. The perception was also that this enabled a better understanding of conflicting issues, even when these were not entirely resolved.

    Agent Based Simulation of a Payment System for Resilience Assessments2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    We provide an agent based simulation model of the Swedish payment system. The simulation model is to be used to analyze the consequences of loss of functionality, or disruptions of the payment system for the food and fuel supply chains as well as the bank sector. We propose a gaming simulation approach, using a computer based role playing game, to explore the collaborative responses from the key actors, in order to evoke and facilitate collective resilience.

    Rapporten beskriver ett projekt som har gjorts för att undersöka hur en webbplats kan göras mer användbar och tillgänglig utifrån en målgrupps behov och förutsättningar. Projektet stödjer sig på forskning och riktlinjer från PTS (Post och Telestyrelsen) och W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). Det har genomförts hos företaget Skäggbyrån där en befintlig intern webbplats har spelat en stor roll. Arbetssättet har varit användarcentrerat då användare har varit delaktiga i processen. Mål har formulerats som handlar om att kartlägga målgrupp, utvärdera befintlig webbplats, få förslag till hur en ny webbplats kan utformas samt om hur etiska principer kan beaktas. För att uppnå målen har en egen undersökning genomförts av den befintliga webbplatsen, användare har deltagit genom enkät och företaget har bidragit med information i intervju. Resultat har visat på brister i struktur och navigering. En målgruppsbeskrivning har tagits fram, syfte har formulerats och specifika krav har skapats för en ny webbplats. Utifrån detta har lösningsförslag konstruerats i form av beskrivningar, schema och skisser. En förhoppning finns nu om att detta kan utgöra ett stabilt underlag för att skapa en ny webbplats med hög användbarhet och tillgänglighet för den tänkta målgruppen.

    bygger på en komponentbaserad arbetsmetod där det i Spacecraft som utvecklingsmiljö

    är möjligt att strukturera sin kod baserat på komponenter med dess

    tillhörande HTML, JavaScript, CSS, konfiguration, bilder etc. Metoden ska

    göra komponenter enklare att flytta och återanvända, tanken är att detta bland

    annat ska bidra till en både mer effektiv- och kvalitetssäkrad produktion. Främst

    kommer mitt arbetet att fokusera på distribution och arkitektur för komponenter

    samt anpassning av funktionalitet i Spacecraft.

    The aim of this study has been to determine whether Microsoft Azure Service Bus has been able to match the needs and demands of Sogeti and its clients during a transition to a distributed and service-oriented system, as well as investi- gate possible gains that can be attained from such a transition. The study has also critically examined the potential problems and difficulties that may arise in such a scenario. The study has been accomplished using a literature study as well as the development of a Proof-of-Concept model to simulate such a system and to make calculations and surveys of and within one. The survey has shown that the Azure Service Bus does match the pre-defined requirements and requisites, as well as demonstrated how safe communication can be guaranteed using this particular service bus. The study concludes with an analysis of the study as a whole and the results thereof in particular, as well as proposes measures for further research on the subject. Finally, recommendations are made on how the client should proceed based on what is found in the study.

    Reliable Information Exchange in IIoT: Investigation into the Role of Data and Data-Driven Modelling2018Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The concept of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the tangible building block for the realisation of the fourth industrial revolution. It should improve productivity, efficiency and reliability of industrial automation systems, leading to revenue growth in industrial scenarios. IIoT needs to encompass various disciplines and technologies to constitute an operable and harmonious system. One essential requirement for a system to exhibit such behaviour is reliable exchange of information. In industrial automation, the information life-cycle starts at the field level, with data collected by sensors, and ends at the enterprise level, where that data is processed into knowledge for business decision making. In IIoT, the process of knowledge discovery is expected to start in the lower layers of the automation hierarchy, and to cover the data exchange between the connected smart objects to perform collaborative tasks.

    This thesis aims to assist the comprehension of the processes for information exchange in IIoT-enabled industrial automation- in particular, how reliable exchange of information can be performed by communication systems at field level given an underlying wireless sensor technology, and how data analytics can complement the processes of various levels of the automation hierarchy. Furthermore, this work explores how an IIoT monitoring system can be designed and developed.

    The communication reliability is addressed by proposing a redundancy-based medium access control protocol for mission-critical applications, and analysing its performance regarding real-time and deterministic delivery. The importance of the data and the benefits of data analytics for various levels of the automation hierarchy are examined by suggesting data-driven methods for visualisation, centralised system modelling and distributed data streams modelling. The design and development of an IIoT monitoring system are addressed by proposing a novel three-layer framework that incorporates wireless sensor, fog, and cloud technologies. Moreover, an IIoT testbed system is developed to realise the proposed framework.

    The outcome of this study suggests that redundancy-based mechanisms improve communication reliability. However, they can also introduce drawbacks, such as poor link utilisation and limited scalability, in the context of IIoT. Data-driven methods result in enhanced readability of visualisation, and reduced necessity of the ground truth in system modelling. The results illustrate that distributed modelling can lower the negative effect of the redundancy-based mechanisms on link utilisation, by reducing the up-link traffic. Mathematical analysis reveals that introducing fog layer in the IIoT framework removes the single point of failure and enhances scalability, while meeting the latency requirements of the monitoring application. Finally, the experiment results show that the IIoT testbed works adequately and can serve for the future development and deployment of IIoT applications.
