The Unexpected Shape of Partner Violence: What is expected is not necessarily what is2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During winter 2014 Mid Sweden University Sundsvall started a research project that aims to gain a deeper understanding around factors that lead up to how survivors of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) break away from the abuse and aspire to create a new life for themselves, which this study is a part of. Intimate partner violence exists, this much is well known, and the concept of domestic violence continues to be examined with emphasis on different aspects and issues regarding the alarming numbers. However, few studies have examined how society treats the abused when the traditional image of the abuser and the abused differs from what is expected, such as when men are violated by women, or when the abuser holds a respected position in society, both factors that this paper wish to highlight. Semi-structured in-depth interviews have been conducted with three men and four women who have been living in violent heterosexual relationships. Findings reveal that intersections between gender norms and social power highly determine the survivor's access to assistance and support from society and authorities.

Lived biographies of changing integration regimes: Migrant narratives ofinstitutional support and labor market in/exclusion in Sweden2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore the interconnection between lived biographies and changing integration policies through migrant narratives on institutional support and labor market experiences. The approach applied in this study allows us to pay particular attention to the dynamic character of integration and to make links between personal, organizational and policy domains, analyzing the shifted integration regimes from the standpoint of migrants. The Swedish politics of integration has during the last year’s undergone vast changes and in 2010, the largest change in the Swedish history of integration policies was performed (etableringsreformen) which meant an increasingly emphasized focus on employment and workfare before welfare and the responsibility for new migrants was transferred from the municipalities to the employment service. As a consequence the rhetoric of integration in Sweden also changed, from what was in municipalities talked about as introduction, to what is now talked about as reception and establishment. By combining immigrants’ subjective views and evaluations with the trajectories of their work biographies, we will discuss changing integration regimes as ‘lived experiences’ of individuals who are subjected to and employed in different occupations that the different integration regimes produces.

Lived Experiences of Changing Integration Policies:: Immigrant Narratives of Institutional Support and Labour Market Inclusion/Exclusion in Sweden2018In: Nordic Journal of Migration Research, ISSN 1799-649X, E-ISSN 1799-649X, Vol. 8, no 1, p. 25-34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to map, locate and make visible the everyday experiences of newly arrived immigrants in government-sponsored integration activities and to trace how these experiences are linked to changes in policy. The study pays particular attention to the dynamic nature of integration and draws links between personal, organisational and policy domains while analysing shifting integration policies from the standpoint of immigrants. Swedish integration policy has undergone vast changes during recent years as the government implements one of the largest changes in Swedish history, beginning in 2010. With this came an emphasis on employment and workfare over welfare. Consequently, the rhetoric of integration in Sweden also changed from what in municipalities was called an introduction to a sense of establishment. By examining the subjective views of immigrants, we discuss the lived experiences of individuals who are subjected to and employed in different occupations due to various integration regimes.

Risk factors of violence during a 4-week period in a psychiatric outpatient population2013In: Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, ISSN 0022-3018, E-ISSN 1539-736X, Vol. 201, no 12, p. 1021-1026Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The clinical impact of structured risk assessment instruments has been limited by a lack of information regarding a) their short-term accuracy and b) the relationship between change as measured by the instrument and a change in the risk for harm. Data were collected every 4 weeks on a) variables designed to resemble the items of a structured risk assessment instrument, b) substance use, c) social circumstances and mental state, and d) violent behavior. Scores on the variables designed to resemble the items of a risk assessment instrument were associated with violence during the ensuing 4 weeks. However, an increase in a subject's score on these variables was not associated with violence. Instead, increasing cocaine use and increasing social conflict as described by the subject at interview were associated with violence during those weeks. "Att vara lite kamelont": Chefers upplevelser av att leda olika generationer2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this study, I search to explore whether the effect of Protestantism on the level of corruption(understood as the misuse of public power for private gain) withstand when controlled forsecularism. This is done via a series of multiple regression analysis which conclude that theeffect of Protestantism on the perceived level of corruption persists when controlling forsecularism. Though the effect is greatly diminished, even when controlling for classicaleconomic factors. The level of secularization remains statistically significant when predictingthe perceived corruption.

Riskfaktorer för våld i stalkningssituationer: - en systematisk litteraturstudie2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Upplevelsen av Återintegrering till Samhället hos Tidigare Dömda: En Interpretativ Fenomenologisk Analys2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Electrophysiology of blunted emotional bias in psychopathic personality2014In: Psychophysiology, ISSN 0048-5772, E-ISSN 1469-8986, Vol. 51, no 1, p. 36-41Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Diminished emotional capacity is a core characteristic of psychopathic personality. We examined behavioral and electrophysiological differences in attentional bias to emotional material in 34 healthy individuals rated high or low in psychopathic traits using the short form of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised (18 high-trait, 16 low-trait). While performing an emotional Stroop task, high-trait participants displayed reduced emotional modulation of the late positive potential (LPP, 400-600ms), and early anterior positivity (EAP, 200-300ms) amplitudes. Results suggest blunted bias to affective content in psychopathic personality, characterized by diminished early capture to emotional salience (EAP) and dampened cognitive emotional processing (LPP).

    Abstract [en]

The number of young people who choose to study at college or university rises, and if the education is held at a programme at the upper secondary school which prepares the students for higher education at college or university, more than eight out of ten students choose to go on to higher education. In this study we discuss, out of a sociological perspective, with upper secondary school students attending the Natural Science programme and the Technological programme about their choices for the future. Our purpose is to find out what factors the upper secondary school students believe influence their choices of further education after they have graduated from the upper secondary school. In this study we examine in what way people around them and socioeconomic factors influence their future choices. We also examine what possible influence factors could differ between the sexes. To find out in what way the students behave about this field we carried out some focus group interviews in order to reach the answers more closely. The parents´ educational background, regardless of if it concerned boys or girls, was the influence factor that the students regarded as the most contributory one prior to their choices for the future.

Children as witnesses to homicidal violence: What they remember and report.2013In: Psychiatry, Psychology and Law, ISSN 1321-8719, E-ISSN 1934-1687, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 366-383Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present study investigated how 96 children who have witnessed homicidal violence remember and report their experiences. The aims of the study were to describe the children’s reporting pattern and to investigate background factors that could affectthe children’s reporting. Police interviews with the children were analysed regarding theamount and type of information reported, as well as frequency of denial, withholding and claims of memory loss. Results showed that the majority of children provided detailed reports about the homicidal violence they had witnessed, including critical details about the abuse. Results also revealed that the child’s relationship to theperpetrator or the victim did not affect the children’s reporting pattern, indicating thatthe children’s willingness to report exceeds strong impact factors such as loyaltyconflicts. These findings are applicable in different legal contexts dealing with child witnesses and can be used as guidance when interviewing children and evaluating theirtestimony.

Människors rädsla att utsättas för en terrorattack i Sverige2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Fear is one of human basic feelings. Before the terrorist attack against the World TradeCenter on September 9, 2001, people felt relatively little fear of terrorist attacks. Skogans andMaxfields theory Coping with crime was used to see if the study results could be explained bytheir theory. The purpose was to describe and account for people's fear of being subjected toa terrorist attack in Sweden. A quantitative method was conducted using a survey sent out viathe social forum Facebook. The survey was sent out on 22 March. After a terrorist attack tookplace in Stockholm, the survey was sent out again on April 10 to investigate whether the fearof being subjected to a terrorist attack changed in connection with an attack. Spearman's rankcorrelation was used to see if there was a correlation between factors in the theory and fearof being subjected to terrorist attacks. A Mann-Whitney U test was conducted to see if the fearof exposure was changed in connection with an attack. The result showed three significantresults. There were two significant results from Spearman's rank correlation, one between sexand fear and one between perceived crime in neighbourhood and fear. The third significantresult was shown in the Mann-Whitney U test which showed that the fear was changed in thecontext of a terrorist attack. The result could to some extent be explained by Skogans andMaxfields theory coping with crime.

Using the Psychopathic Personality Inventory to identify subtypes of antisocial personality disorder2013In: Journal of criminal justice, ISSN 0047-2352, E-ISSN 1873-6203, Vol. 41, no 2, p. 125-134Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Poythress, Edens, et al. (2010) recently used cluster analysis to identify subtypes of antisocial and psychopathic offenders using a diverse collection of theoretically important clustering variables. Two predicted subtypes, primary and secondary psychopathy, were identified, in addition to non-psychopathic and (unexpectedly) "fearful" psychopathic offenders. The purpose of the present research was to determine whether these clusters could be replicated using a single self-report measure, the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI; Lilienfeld & Andrews, 1996). Method: Study 1: We used discriminant function analysis (DFA) to predict cluster membership for the Poythress et al. subtypes based solely on the eight subscales of the PPI. Results: Study 1: Though overall classification accuracy with the original clusters was poor, PPI-derived subtypes differed from each other in theoretically consistent ways on several criterion measures. Method: Study 2: We used the PPI-based DFA to classify a separate sample of prison inmates from a prior PPI study (Edens et al., 2008). Results: Study 2: As predicted, inmates classified into the secondary psychopathy subgroup demonstrated the highest rates of aggressive misconduct whereas non-psychopathic were the least prone to engage in misconduct. Conclusion: The PPI may serve as a relatively simple method of identifying theoretically meaningful subtypes of psychopathic offenders.

The roles of followers: an exploratory study of follower roles in a Swedish context2013In: Leadership & Organization Development Journal, ISSN 0143-7739, E-ISSN 1472-5347, Vol. 34, no 8, p. 708-723Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to draw a more nuanced picture of what characterizes followership in an organization. Design/methodology/approach - This exploratory study including seven depth interviews conducted with Swedish armed forces personnel at various levels - both officers and civilians on what characterizes followers. Additional two group discussions were conducted with employees; one representing followers and one representing middle management. Findings - The paper provides empirical insights about three follower roles - workmate, colleague, and co-worker and how they correspond to individual-related and organization-related categories. The most prominent feature of the role of workmate is work solidarity. The characteristic of the colleague is professional loyalty. Finally, the co-worker is looked upon as exercising leadership by extension. Research limitations/implications - Because of the chosen research approach, the research results may lack generalizability. Researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further, and to further investigate the relationships between other followers' roles - such as temporary agency worker, flexible worker, and expert. Practical implications - The paper includes implications for the leader-follower relations, first, how management should lead subordinates in an organization. Second, there are ramifications for how followers' work is best organized. Finally, the paper verifies the importance of individual-related categories, not only between leaders and followers, but also between followers. Originality/value - The paper argues that followers should not only be seen in terms of traits or labels, but as the product of relations within organizations. Followers' actions are restrained by the frame of their positions. This has an impact on the development of the followers' roles.

From common operating picture to situational awareness2014In: International Journal of Emergency Management, ISSN 1471-4825, E-ISSN 1741-5071, Vol. 10, no 1, p. 28-47Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate what influences the formation of a common operating picture and situational awareness during collaborative efforts to deal with complex disasters. Particular focus is given to the relationship between the operating picture and situational awareness. The study was conducted using qualitative interviews and a grounded theory approach, and is based on interview data from three crisis events. The results show that the operating picture is influenced by information coming together from different sources and forming a snapshot of the event, a portrait which changes and is updated over time, while organisational belonging, role and occupationally specific knowledge provide a framework for and influence situational awareness. The results also show that the operating picture forms the basis for an occupationally specific and role-based situational awareness and its subsequent decision-making. Further studies on the relation between common operating picture, sense making and situational awareness are discussed. Copyright © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Risk Communication: A Comparative Study of Eight EU Countries2018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

How do EU member states communicate risks to their citizens? In this study, we define risk communication as the information provided by different levels of government to citizens regarding possible future crises. The questions serving as departure points for this study are as follows: How is the administrative system for risk communication set up in the countries studied? How the different risk communication campaigns are (provided that they exist) embedded in the larger administrative context? How is risk communication strategy formulated in each country and what kind of threats are emphasized? In order to tackle these questions, we examine the risk communication strategy of eight countries: Sweden, Finland, Germany, England, France, Estonia, Greece and Cyprus. Our data consist of governmental web sites, publications, campaigns, as well as other modes of communication, such as videos posted on YouTube, with questions centering on institutional actors, methods of delivery, content, and effectiveness. We acknowledge that risk communication aims at supporting vulnerable populations and evening out imbalances, but at the same time we flesh out the power dimension of risk. In our analysis, we search for reproduction of norms and social inequality in risk communication practices. The results show that some patterns emerge regarding the way different EU countries convey information to the public, but they do not hold strictly to geography or administrative system. Digital media are the foremost vehicle of risk communication and the message generally conveyed is geared towards traditional, middle class households with the main language of the country as their first language. Volunteer organizations are present in all the countries in question, though not at the same degree. The conveyance of “self-protection” guidelines implicitly places the responsibility of protection to the individual. The results also show that in some countries, materiality has become more prevalent than the social dimension of risk in the message the public sector conveys, and that there is a move from focusing on risk to focusing on security.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine how personnel from different organizations create meaning and intend to act in a potential dangerous situation. Design/methodology: The article rests upon an experiment, showing a movie with a bomb at the entrance of a retirement center. The task of the participants was to describe the situation and decide how to act in different situations. The participants involve was personnel from different kinds of organizations. Findings: Our findings show that there are different kinds of understanding of the situation and how to act, that could be explained by the logic of the organizational field, professional knowledge and the person's earlier experience. Originality/value: While most studies have been focusing on the interaction between emergency organizations alone, this study has investigated the sense making and acting of emergency organizations and other non-emergency organization. Most studies are also conducted either as retrospective interviews after a crisis or during training exercise. This study rest upon an experiment, were the subjects had to interpret the situation and decide how to act in real time.

Sektorsövergripande samverkan vid kriser2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]
