Är den ojämlika hälsan nästa samhällsutmaning?: En litteraturstudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Pedagogiskt idrottsledarskap: Med fokus på genus- och jämställdhetsfrågor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Under processens gång utvecklades intresset för just idrott.

Making news funny - differences in news framing between journalism and political comedy2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Classic agenda-setting and news framing research focuses on traditional media actors; journalists, political figures, professional communicators. However, the personalization of politics and journalism, as well as the rise of social media, is creating new spaces for other actors, like comedians. In the separation of vertical media: media who are still aiming for a wide audience with content of general relevance, and horizontal media: more specific media actors building a community around the content they produce, comedians can be considered actors in horizontal media, who help provide community agenda (McCombs et al., 2014; Ninković-Slavnić, 2016). This study compares how professional comedians as actors in horizontal media frame news and current affairs with the journalistic framing of vertical media. The study is performed via a quantitative content analysis of Swedish political comedy and Swedish news media. It shows that the comedic framing is more thematic and more often on a societal level, while journalistic news framing is more episodic and on an individual level. The comedic framing is also more focused on issues of political figures and political processes; more personal, more emotional, more negative and more inclusive of different types of actors and policy plans when compared to the journalistic news reporting of vertical media.

The study is performed via a quantitative content analysis of Swedish political comedy and traditional Swedish news coverage, with a focus on the emerging podcast medium. It shows that the comedic framing is dramatically more personal and emotional. It is also more thematic and more often on a societal level, while the journalistic news framing is more episodic and on an individual level. The comedic framing is also more focused on issues of political figures and processes, more negative, and more inclusive of different types of societal actors when compared to the news reporting of vertical media.

When Small State Comedians Frame the News: The Agenda-Setting of Political Humor2018In: 30th ISHS Conference Humour: Positively (?) Transforming: Book Of Abstracts / [ed] Liisi Laineste and Anastasiya Fiadotava, 2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Classic agenda-setting and news framing research focuses on traditional media producers; journalists, editors, professional communicators. However, the personalization of politics and journalism, as well as the rise of social media, is creating new spaces for other actors (McCombs et al., 2014; Ninković-Slavnić, 2016). When media consumption becomes more fragmented, and news are circulated more than distributed, alternative opinion leaders such as comedians might be more influential. The growing impact of humor in the daily news cycle, especially regarding the younger generations, thus makes comedians an important object of study (Abel and Barthel, 2013; Wohn and Bowe, 2016). Previous studies have established that entertainment media have agenda-setting functions just as news media, that political comedy can have incidental persuasive effects with entertainment seekers and that political humor may increase political awareness among apolitical audiences (Greenwood et al., 2016: 2016; Holbrook and Hill, 2005; Shah et al., 2012). The current paper builds on this development and compares how professional comedians frame news and current affairs with how traditional journalists frame similar news. The study is performed via content analysis of Swedish political satire radio shows and podcasts compared with journalistically framed Swedish news media coverage. It will have a combined quantitative and qualitative approach with the first mapping the topics discussed and types of frames used, and the second more thoroughly looking at how the comedians address international politics in relation to national politics. Preliminary results of the quantitative part show that the comedic framing is more thematic while traditional news framing is more episodic. Journalistic reporting is more often on an individual level while comedic commentary is more often on a societal level. The comedic framing is also more personal and emotional, while the dominant tonality is difficult to decode because of common comedic approaches such as irony and ridicule. The framing is similar between the two occupations when it comes to timeliness; they both mostly handle current events as opposed to historical or future events. When looking at most addressed news topics the comedians tackled politics, entertainment, media and social issues while traditional journalists reported more on culture and crime.

Skapande verksamhet i socialt arbete En översiktsanalys2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

According to everyday experience, fear seems to be part of ideosyncratic contexts, and to take such diverse forms as to defy simple classification. Torgerson (1979) asked subjects to rate their fear of many types of situations, and subjected the ratings to factor analysis. In this way, he isolated five clusters of feared situations: separation fears, social fears, animal fears, mutilation fears, and nature fears. Similar, albeit not identical, factors have been identified in many investigations (see Ohman, Dimberg, & Ost, 1985, for a review).

    Abstract [en]

Participants searched for discrepant fear-relevant pictures (snakes or spiders) in grid-pattern arrays of fear-irrelevant pictures belonging to the same category (flowers or mushrooms) and vice versa. Fear-relevant pictures were found more quickly than fear-irrelevant ones. Fear-relevant, but not fear-irrelevant, search was unaffected by the location of the target in the display and by the number of distractors, which suggests parallel search for fear-relevant targets and serial search for fear-irrelevant targets. Participants specifically fearful of snakes but not spiders (or vice versa) showed facilitated search for the feared objects but did not differ from controls in search for nonfeared fear-relevant or fear-irrelevant, targets. Thus, evolutionary relevant threatening stimuli were effective in capturing attention, and this effect was further facilitated if the stimulus was emotionally provocative.

The face in the crowd revisited: A threat advantage with schematic stimuli2001In: Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, ISSN 0022-3514, E-ISSN 1939-1315, Vol. 80, p. 381-396Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Schematic threatening, friendly, and neutral faces were used to test the hypothesis that humans preferentially orient their attention toward threat. Using a visual search paradigm, participants searched for discrepant faces in matrices of otherwise identical faces. Across 5 experiments, results consistently showed faster and more accurate detection of threatening than friendly targets. The threat advantage was obvious regardless of whether the conditions favored parallel or serial search (i.e., involved neutral or emotional distractors), and it was valid for inverted faces. Threatening angry faces were more quickly and accurately detected than were other negative faces (sad or "scheming"), which suggests that the threat advantage can be attributed to threat rather than to the negative valence or the uniqueness of the target display.

Evolutionary derived modulations of attention to two common fear stimuli: Serpents and hostile humans2012In: Journal of Cognitive Psychology, ISSN 2044-5911, E-ISSN 2044-592X, Vol. 24, p. 17-32Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we present an evolutionary analysis of attention to stimuli that are threatening from an evolutionary perspective, such as angry faces and snakes. We review data showing that angry, photographically depicted angry faces are more rapidly detected than happy faces in a visual search setting provided that they are male and that distractors are redundant in the sense that they are drawn from a small set of faces. Following Isbell's (2009) novel Snake Detection Theory, we predicted that snakes, as the prototypical predators, should be more rapidly detected than spiders, given that spiders have provided less of a predatory threat for primates. We review a series of experiments from our laboratory showing that snakes indeed are more rapidly detected than spiders provided that the target stimuli are presented in a demanding visual context, such as many distractor stimuli, or in peripheral vision. Furthermore, they are more distracting than spiders on the performance of a primary attention task. Because snakes were not affected by perceptual load, whereas spiders followed the usual rule of better detection with low perceptual load, we concluded that attending to snakes might constitute an evolutionary adaptation.

Gymnasiestudenters uppfattningar om allvarlighetsgraden i partnervåld2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Auditing is an important activity in today’s society and is characterised by several dilemmas. The assumption underlying this thesis is that auditing is influenced in prac-tice by the thought patterns of auditors. These patterns are shaped in an environment that is both regulated and self-regulated. The purpose of the thesis is to describe, analyse and compare the thought patterns of Swedish auditors and important stake-holders with regard to the way in which auditors audit information provided by listed companies and how they make statements about this information. The purpose is also to make some suggestions about how the auditing activity can be modified in order to reduce conflicting interests. The methodological approach combines the use of the repertory grid technique and open-ended interview questions. Interviews were carried out with 82 auditors and 73 stakeholders. To validate the findings, four focus groups, consisting of auditors, investors and creditors, were consulted.

The findings indicate that auditors devote a relatively large amount of time and considerable effort to objects that can be verified satisfactorily, but not to objects that they perceive as being of primary importance to investors and creditors. A similar gap is found in the thought patterns of investors and creditors. Moreover, several expec-tation gaps are found, in particular regarding auditors’ statements. On the one hand, the auditors studied were reluctant to make statements about any other information than information obtained according to current practice; on the other hand, the inves-tors and creditors expressed a need for additional information about the outcome of the audit and the choice of auditing objects.

The concluding suggestions concern measures that can reduce the discrepancies identi-fied, including (i) the introduction of a mandatory primary audit and a market-oriented secondary audit, (ii) extended information about the outcome of the audit and the choice of auditing objects that will benefit the stakeholders, (iii) a somewhat less expo-sed position of the auditors, and (iv) the importance of a changed balance of power in the auditing arena and the need for an integrated and dynamic approach to auditing.

    Abstract [sv]

Rapporten sammanfattar de resultat som tidigare publicerats i akademirapporten "Riksrevisionen – effektivitetens, rättssäkerhetens och demokratins väktare" (Skærbæk, Öhman, Montgomery, Svärdsten och Grönlund, 2008) och i den internationella tidskriftsartikeln "Value for money and the rule of law: The (new) performance audit in Sweden" (Grönlund, Svärdsten och Öhman, 2011).

Swedish auditors' view of auditing: Doing things right versus doing the right things2006In: European Accounting Review, ISSN 0963-8180, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 89-114Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to describe and analyse the thought patterns of Swedish auditors with regard to the way in which they audit information provided by listed companies, and possible changes in their duties. Eighty-two auditors were interviewed using the repertory grid technique and open-ended interview questions. To check the stability in the thought patterns of the respondents, six retests were made and, to validate the findings, an expert panel and two reference groups consisting of auditors and other representatives of the accounting and auditing professions were consulted. Distinct patterns emerged in the mean grid of the thought patterns of all the respondents. One dimension was related to the time perspective, past versus future, and another to auditing practice. Auditors devote a relatively long time and considerable effort to objects that can be satisfactorily verified, but not to objects that they perceive as being of primary importance to investors and other stakeholders. This inconsistency in the thought patterns of the auditors is similar to the gap between auditing in practice and stakeholders' expectations of auditing, which is a phenomenon frequently found in previous research. Moreover, the auditors were very reluctant to make statements about any information except that elicited according to current practice. In addition to this traditional view, the auditors appear to be more concerned about their own situation than that of the parties they are meant to be protecting. Doing things right seems to be more important than doing the right things. That the auditors spend much time on objects that they themselves do not consider to be of primary importance for the investors and other stakeholders, and their unwillingness to change current practice is of great concern in Sweden, where there is a strong belief in self-regulation of the auditing profession.
