    Produktion av biokol i Östersunds kommun2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    För att nå målet i Parisavtalet räcker det inte att enbart minska utsläppen av koldioxid, utan den måste fångas upp och lagras. Ett sätt att göra det är att öka växters och jordas förmåga att lagra kol, där kan biokol spela en viktig roll. Biokol bildas i en pyrolysprocess när organiskt material hettas upp utan tillgång till syre. 

    Studien har undersökt förutsättningarna för att anlägga en produktionsanläggning för biokol i Östersunds kommun. För att se vilka material som finns tillgängliga att producera biokol av har data samlats in från Gräfsåsens avfallsanläggning. Andra projekt har studerats för att få fram ekonomiska förutsättningar och lämpliga platser för anläggningen har jämförts. Resultatet påvisar att tio organiska material finns tillgängliga, varav tre uppfyllde satta kriterier att producera biokol av (trädgårdsavfall, externslam och organiskt hushåll/verksamhetsutfall). Resultatet visar stor spridning kring de ekonomiska förutsättningarna, något som främst grundar sig i en osäker marknad för biokol och varierande bidragsstöd. Tre olika platser i Östersunds kommun, där en biokolsanläggning kan placeras, jämfördes enligt tre olika faktorer. 

    Diskussionen belyser att även negativa sidor måste tas hänsyn till för att välja det mest lämpliga materialet att producera biokol av. Detta på grund av materialens innehåll av olämpliga fraktioner, som tex plast i det organiska materialet och tungmetaller i slam. Vikten av att se helheten lyftes också, där en biokolsanläggning tillsammans med resterande avfalls-, energi- och bränslesystem kan skapa en helhet för ett mer cirkulärt användande av resurser och näringsämnen. För att identifiera dessa interaktionspunkter krävs vidare studier. 

    Slutsatsen av studien är att trädgårdsavfall är det lämpligaste materialet att producera biokol av. Studien påvisar även att många faktorer påverkar de ekonomiska förutsättningarna. För att föreslå en plats för biokolsanläggningen bör en mer djupgående analys göras.

    Eddy-covariance measurements made in the marine atmospheric boundary layer above a high Arctic fjord (Adventfjorden, Svalbard) are analyzed. When conditions are unstable, but close to neutral −0.1 < z/L < 0, where z is the height, and L is the Obukhov length, the exchange coefficient for sensible heat CH is significantly enhanced compared with that expected from classical surface-layer theory. Cospectra of the vertical velocity component (w) and temperature (T) reveal that a high-frequency peak develops at f ≈ 1 Hz for z/L > − 0.15. A quadrant analysis reveals that the contribution from downdrafts to the vertical heat flux increases as conditions become close to neutral. These findings are the signature of the evolving unstable very-close-to-neutral (UVCN) regime previously shown to enhance the magnitude of sensible and latent heat fluxes in the marine surface layer over the Baltic Sea. Our data reveal the significance of the UVCN regime for the vertical flux of the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration (C). The cospectrum of w and C clearly shows how the high-frequency peak grows in magnitude for z/L > − 0.15, while the high-frequency peak dominates for z/L > − 0.02. As found for the heat flux, the quadrant analysis of the CO2 flux shows a connection between the additional small-scale turbulence and downdrafts from above. In contrast to the vertical fluxes of sensible and latent heat, which are primarily enhanced by the very different properties of the air from aloft (colder and drier) during UVCN conditions, the increase in the air–sea transfer of CO2 is possibly a result of the additional small-scale turbulence causing an increase in the water-side turbulence. The data indicate an increase in the gas-transfer velocity for CO2 for z/L > − 0.15 but with a large scatter. During the nearly 2 months of continuous measurements (March–April 2013), as much as 36% of all data are associated with the stability range −0.15 < z/L < 0, suggesting that the UVCN regime is of significance in the wintertime Arctic for the air–sea transfer of heat and possibly also CO2.

    How can Ecosystem Services be implemented in local Climate Adaptation?: A case study of Arjeplog2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Ecosystem services are essential for human climate adaptation. As climate change is a direct driver of change for ecosystem service provisioning, it is of importance to care for our ecosystems to be able to cope with future challenges. Local governance has a central role in climate adaptation due to its responsibility in physical planning. To be able to plan for changes driven by climate change, a flexible, adaptive strategy is necessary. Ecosystem-based Adaptation, EbA, can provide this flexibility to an overall adaptation strategy. In this case study, the potential of EbA to help Nature-based Tourism, NbT, to adapt to a changing climate was spatially mapped to be a useful part of the basis for local physical planning. The mapping includes areas of biodiversity, water infrastructure and features that provide resilience to climate change. The results show that there are areas with potential for EbA that can address adverse effects of climate change for the NbT. These spatial mapped areas provide an instant overview of the key areas to consider when planning for climate adaptation. These mapped areas are also combined with a qualitative assessment of the potential for EbA. By providing decision-makers with information on where and how ecosystem services can assist local climate adaptation, decisions that support both the future of humanity and ecosystems are enabled. However, to reach enforcement of EbA, the knowledge has to be included in binding documents such as detail plans.

    Med bakgrund av de stora miljöproblem världen står inför börjar det bli uppenbart för allt fler att det krävs stora strukturella förändringar för att styra världen i en mer hållbar riktning. Hur vi hanterar vår ekonomi behöver förändras för att på ett bättre sätt integreras med upprätthållandet av jordens system. Flera av de stora internationella organisationerna och ledare för många av världens länder hoppas på att vi genom hållbar tillväxt ska lyckas styra om vår produktion och konsumtion till mer miljövänliga former och på så sätt lösa klimatkrisen samtidigt som vi utvecklar världsekonomin. I denna studie undersöks hur svenska kommuner arbetar med hållbar tillväxt och om deras arbete bidrar till att nå hållbar utveckling. Data från alla 290 kommuner har undersökts och därefter har resultatet kategoriserats genom Swedish Standards Institutes (SIS) ledningssystem för hållbar utveckling. Därefter har resultatet analyserats genom olika teorier kopplade till hållbar utveckling. Av alla Sveriges kommuner är det enbart 27 procent som har en medvetenhet om begreppet. 11 procent har integrerat begreppet och har målsättningar kopplade till det. Genom SIS växer en bild fram där mål som rör miljö och klimatfrågor har en väldigt låg utbredning. Istället blir det tydligt att det är mål kopplade till näringsliv och lokal ekonomi som har både högst spridning och prioritet. De svenska kommunernas arbete med hållbar tillväxt bidrar inte till uppfyllandet av hållbar utveckling och frågan är om hållbar tillväxt som paradigm hjälper eller stjälper. Kanske är det dags att slopa tillväxt som begrepp helt och hållet och istället tala om det samhälle och de värden vi vill se i framtiden bortom ekonomisk tillväxt.

    Society faces the double challenge of addressing negative impacts of current land use, while increasing biomass production to meet the future demands for food, materials and bioenergy. Potential impacts of increasing the biomass supply are subject to debate. In the discourse, land use change (LUC) has often been considered as negative, referring to impacts of deforestation and cropland expansion. At the same time, LUC is considered necessary for mitigating impacts of existing land use. Strategic establishment of suitable crop cultivation systems in agricultural landscapes can mitigate environmental impacts of current crop production, while providing biomass for the bioeconomy. Here, we explore the potential for such “beneficial LUC” in EU28, based on high-resolution land use modeling. First, we map and quantify the degree of accumulated soil organic carbon losses, wind and water erosion, nitrogen emissions to water, and recurring flooding, in ~81.000 individual sub-watersheds in EU28. We then estimate the effectiveness in mitigating these impacts through establishment of perennial plants, in each sub-watershed. Finally, we identify areas where perennialization may be particularly beneficial from an environmental point of view. The results indicate that there is a substantial potential for effective mitigation, regarding all the assessed impacts. Depending on criteria selection, some 10-46% of the land used for annual crop production in EU28 is located in landscapes that could be considered priority areas for beneficial LUC. While some recent policy development is favorable for promoting beneficial LUC, the effectiveness could be increased by seeking synergies between climate change mitigation, energy security, and other societal goals. One way forward can be to identify and promote options for biomass production in the context of SDG implementation.

However, strategic establishment of suitable perennial production systems in agricultural landscapes can mitigate environmental impacts of current crop production, while providing biomass for the bioeconomy. Here, we explore the potential for such “beneficial LUC” in EU28. First, we map and quantify the degree of accumulated soil organic carbon losses, soil loss by wind and water erosion, nitrogen emissions to water, and recurring floods, in ∼81.000 individual landscapes in EU28. We then estimate the effectiveness in mitigating these impacts through establishment of perennial plants, in each landscape. The results indicate that there is a substantial potential for effective impact mitigation. Depending on criteria selection, 10–46% of the land used for annual crop production in EU28 is located in landscapes that could be considered priority areas for beneficial LUC. These areas are scattered all over Europe, but there are notable “hot-spots” where priority areas are concentrated, e.g., large parts of Denmark, western UK, The Po valley in Italy, and the Danube basin. While some policy developments support beneficial LUC, implementation could benefit from attempts to realize synergies between different Sustainable Development Goals, e.g., “Zero hunger”, “Clean water and sanitation”, “Affordable and Clean Energy”, “Climate Action”, and “Life on Land”.

    The Brazilian Amazon rainforest is protected largely by command and control regulation of public and private land. The Brazilian Forest Act requires private landholders within the Amazon to set aside 80% of their land as legal reserves for nature protection, but this requirement can be reduced to 50% if more than 65% of a state’s territory is protected public land (for example, public conservation units and indigenous reserves). In the ongoing land designation process in Brazil, some Amazonian states may cross this 65% threshold. We assess the potential reduction in the legal reserve requirement from 80% to 50%, through spatially explicit modelling of scenarios concerning land tenure consolidation, employing up-to-date databases on land ownership. Depending on the outcome of land designation processes and political priorities, some 6.5–15.4 million hectares of private land previously protected as legal reserves may become available for legal deforestation. While protection of public land is crucial for safeguarding the Amazon, revisions of federal and state legislation may be needed to avoid the further extension of protected public land triggering increased legal deforestation on private lands. Zero-deforestation commitments and other initiatives may mitigate impacts in the absence of such revision.

    Abstract [en]

    Emergy analysis (emergy synthesis) is one of the methods in the sustainability assessment toolbox. In the way it is using stocks and flows of energy and matter it is similar to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Substance Flow Analysis (SFA). However, Emergy accounting also includes stocks and flows of money and information. In its mechanism of relating to a global baseline of renewable flows Emergy accounting is similar to Ecological footprints in that it is not just revealing which of two alternatives is using more or less of different stocks or flows but also comparing the use to available renewable flows on a global annual basis.

    This paper address the contribution of four different aspects of Emergy analysis, to the overarching goal of sustainability from a modelling perspective.

    The four different approaches of assessing sustainability identified are: 1) the Emergy Sustainability Index (ESI), 2) emergy as a normalizing measure, 3) emergy as a network measure, and 4) the pulsing paradigm.

    What to include in carbon budget models in Swedish forests?2019Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The Swedish legislation regarding forestry, the Forestry Act from 1994, states that forestry should promote forests’ production and environmental values equally. Simultaneously extracting biomass resources for renewable materials and products while preserving and enhancing forest environments and biodiversity is a challenging task.

    In this paper, the balancing question is problematized with focus on what items and relationships to include in forest models with a special focus on carbon budgets.

    The results show that the biodiversity aspect is more difficult to capture in the models than the production data.

    This paper, inspired by Sven Erik Jørgensen's academic life, takes a systems ecology perspective on sustainability in wastewater sludge management. First, an overview identifies the indicators and methods currently used to assess sustainability and sustainable development in the area of wastewater sludge. Second, two systems ecology conceptual models are presented. Third, the indicators and methods are discussed in the perspective of these systems ecology models. Four methods were found common in assessing wastewater sludge sustainability: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Exergy Analysis (ExA), Emergy Analysis (EmA), and Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA). Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) was added since it was found to be used in the larger wastewater treatment context, and complements the other four methods. When comparing the indicators and methods with the systems ecology models it was found that no method covered every aspect of the models. ExA, EmA and ERA covered the full extent of the models but not from every aspect interesting from a sustainability point of view. LCA and CBA had a lower reach at the ecosystem side of the models, but produced deeper knowledge regarding environmental impacts for LCA, and economic flows and storages for CBA. The investigation concludes that a complementary approach of methods and indicators is needed to assess sustainability, and they are suggested to be used in an integrated way, in the spirit of Sven Erik Jørgensen's findings.

    Abstract [en]

    Environmental governance is a challenge for many developing countries, and soil pollution is typically overlooked by authorities in the Global South. Soil governance should protect people and environment from the hazards of pollution and promote sustainable remediation of polluted sites through legislation and soil policies that facilitate the use of appropriate technology. Today, however, the soil governance landscape is highly fragmented and often fails to adequately address these concerns. Combining soil remediation with profitable activities (alone or in combination) such as food and fiber production, biomass energy production, erosion control, carbon sequestration, favoring biodiversity, etc. is potentially an appropriate strategy to promote the decontamination of polluted agriculture soil in low-income countries. Many potential pitfalls follow such a strategy but decision support tools may provide insights from the latest scientific remediation findings to stakeholders in their exploration of policy options. This chapter explores challenges and opportunities for sustainable soil governance in developing countries.

    The first/last mile (FM/LM) problem is directly connected to the accessibility of public transport, which in turn is linked to a reduction of problems such as greenhouse gas emissions, traffic congestion, and related health and environmental problems. Despite a growing interest of FM/LM studies, there is a lack of a common definition and framework. This study aims to define and develop a framework of the FM/LM problem and then evaluate the extent of FM/LM problems of public transport in a case study of Stockholm County. Thresholds are established using willingness to walk studies. A GIS service area model was built and used for case study relevant for the years 2019 and 2035.The first and last mile is defined as the distances between public transport and destination or residence, with problem areas defined as buildings outside of willingness to walk thresholds. Literature study shows a wide spread of thresholds, with individuals willing to walk further to faster services and a high willingness to walk in Stockholm compared to other cities. Almost all buildings currently lacking access to public transport are smaller houses in rural areas, with about a third being in holiday home areas. Future scenarios show that areas prioritized for development have access to public transport, with one exception; Arlanda/Märsta.The proposed method for evaluating FM/LM problems is less time-consuming and requires less data collection than some other methods, while still providing insight into areas lacking access to public transport. Most buildings in Stockholm currently have access to public transport, especially apartments and commercial buildings. Future development shows promise of improved public transport. However, if future development plans fail to account for population growth, the perceived accessibility of public transport will likely be negatively affected.

    Samråden i samband med slutförvaret för använt kärnbränsle i Östhammars kommun2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave

    Detta är en fallstudie där SKBs genomförda samråd i Östhammars kommun under åren 2002-2011 har studerats. Inför den ansökan som SKB lämnade till mark- och miljödomstolen 2011 behövde bolaget upprätta en miljökonsekvensbeskrivning (MKB). För att kunna göra detta behövde samråd genomföras. Det planerade slutförvaret är en komplex verksamhet och kan upplevas besvärlig att samråda kring, både av verksamhetsutövaren och av deltagare.

    Syftet med samrådet är att få in synpunkter och frågor kring den tänkta verksamheten som sedan kan användas till att utveckla och förbättra miljökonsekvensbeskrivningen. Vanliga sätt att bedriva samråd är att hålla informationsmöten, vilket också var det sätt som SKB valde. Det material som finns från dessa samråd är sammanställningar som SKB själva har gjort.

    När SKB lämnade in sin ansökan lämnades det också in en samrådsredogörelse där de genomförda samråden beskrivs.

    SKB har genomfört sina samråd på ett ganska förutsägbart sätt. Då det bara finns skriftligt material från samråden så är det svårt att avgöra om de har återgivits på ett rättvisande sätt. Det är med tveksamhet som syftet med samråd kan ses som uppfyllt.

    Abstract [en]

    Multilateral Environmental Agreements-MEAs-are indispensable legal frameworks for environmental sustainability and also define the operating rules of their implementation bodies ("Secretariats"). The contribution assesses in how far the norms defining Secretariats' functions differ and also reflect on actual functions for three MEAs, namely (1) the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora-CITES (1973), (2) the Convention on Biological Diversity-CBD (1992), and (3) the Convention on Migratory Species-CMS (1979). It does so by comparative legal interpretation of the main norms of these MEAs laying down the functions of its respective Secretariats as well as an in-depth review of academic literature about these functions. The results for these three conventions divide into nine functional areas and show an unexpectedly wide range of different functions laid down in the conventions as well as extensive variety in the discretion for many of these functional areas. Some potential explanations of these formal differences are provided. The paper further finds that actually executed functions may not be fully covered by the underlying legal norms but rather by "flexible" highest governing bodies of MEAs and concludes that occasionally an unusual legislative style was chosen, and shows potential solutions and future research directions.

    Abstract [en]

    The aims of this Special Issue (SI) are to provide a broad and structured overview on literature published related to Law and Ecological Economics (EE) as well as to offer latest insights into this wide and further emerging combined field of research by means of contributed papers. Thus, this introduction into the SI firstly implements a systematic database term search and further analyses 129 papers identified. It was found that the majority refers to the “laws” of thermodynamics. Only 33 publications could be related to EE and Law, latter in the sense of the Rule of Law, with quite even allocation among the three streams identified, namely theoretical and philosophical considerations, strategic transition and transformation studies, and practical case studies. The literature overview also chronologically indicates that the vast majority of those 33 papers have been written during the past 15 years. The second part of this introduction describes the content of the seven contributions to this SI more in detail. Afterwards it shows that these contributions tend similarly more into the directions of providing strategic transition and transformation studies as well as practical case studies, indicating an overall shift from theory towards practical implementation of EE within Law.

    Pulp and paper bio-sludge (PPBS) has low economic value and is therefore often composted or incinerated. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of using PPBS to breed black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae (BSFL), so improving resource efficiency and supplying protein and fat to the animal feed market. BSFL were reared on PPBS in a climate chamber on a laboratory scale in order to assess nutrient deficiency, inhibition and whether the BSFL recycle the PPBS well or not. The PPBS used came from a chemi-thermomechanical pulp/groundwood pulp mill. The effect of supplementing nutrient solution added either into the PPBS or as a free liquid surface were studied. Prepupae dry weight, survival rate until prepupae stage and residual dry PPBS were measured. The addition of reference diet leachate into the PPBS did not have a significant impact on the weight of the prepupae (2.0 mg) but the survival rate was significantly higher (16.0 %). On the other hand, the addition of reference diet leachate as a free liquid surface had a significant impact on both the weight of the prepupae (4.8 mg) and the survival rate (25.7 %). The bio – conversion and PPBS – reduction was as best 0.4 % and 3.2 % respectively. This study has proven that the nutrients in PPBS are not readily available to the larvae. Addition of reference diet leachate increase the survival rate which opens up for possibilities of co-digestion. However, it is clear that under the tested conditions, BSFL is not recycling PPBS well and BSFL as a method for recycling of PPBS need further research.

    Cyprus Sustainability Assessment: Can models help?2019Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)

    Cypriot development is highly dependent on fossil fuel imports for supporting country production levels to meet the local demand.  With the island’s entry in the European Union, a long term strategy for converging the unsustainable development with sustainable development is necessary.  In our attempt to assess Cyprus sustainability, several factors that affect the system have been observed.  The most significant environmental impacts are drought, water pollution, erosion and wildlife preservation. The uneven precipitation levels and absence of natural reservoir catchments have striking effects on soil quality and life. The purity of the water supply is threatened by industrial pollutants, the lack of adequate sewage treatment and pesticides used in agricultural areas. The environmental load becomes a debt in the national liabilities.  Adding to the complexity, the effect of tourism poses more risks on the local communities. Resource availability and resource scarcity are a global concern. How, then, can models help in the assessment of Cyprus sustainability? Integrated assessment models – integrating e.g. geographic information, populations statistics, and environmental load – illustrate the interconnected relationships and limits of the socio-natural system and the biosphere.  For example, the albedo effect in the future under different assumptions can be estimated. Assumptions can be made regarding e.g. Cyprus future population, economic growth and indigenous resource availability.  The general ecologic view on global resource availability is that the Earth is finite.  Models like the “The Limits to Growth”, by Meadows et al. (1972) and “The Pulsing Paradigm” by Odum et al. (1995) represent the striking events of fossil fuel-based societies. Models can also be manipulatied in the quest for a high output/input ratio than in reality.  The ability to use modeling knowledge and facilitate decisions before the implementation stage helps avoiding crisis and system collapse.

    Människans beteende orsakar växthusgasutsläpp som leder till klimatförändringar. En minskad klimatpåverkan kan skapas genom beteendeförändringar på individnivå. Åre kommun försöker att främja denna förändring genom projektet Klimatsmarta familjer. Projektet bygger på sju teman kring klimat och går ut på att sex familjer i kommunen får delta i tema-träffar, kommunicera via en offentlig och en privat kommunikationsplattform, kalkylera sitt klimatkonto samt sätta upp mål för hur de kan ändra sitt beteende för att minska klimatpåverkan.

    Syftet med studien är att bidra med kunskap kring hur klimatprojekt med fokus på beteendeförändringar kan utformas genom att en fallstudie görs av projektet Klimatsmarta familjer. Metoden är utformad för att undersöka hur projektet utgjort stöd för familjerna, vilken effekt som skapats, vilka lärdomar som kan dras och vilka svårigheter familjerna upplevt kring att minska sin klimatpåverkan. Intervjuer med Åre kommun samt representanter ur fyra av familjerna har utförts, en matris över aktiviteten på kommunikationsplattformarna skapats samt analys utförts utifrån teori kring Stoknes 5D och 5S, Påverka beteende genom systematisk återkoppling och SMARTa mål.

    Studien visar att delar som tema-träffarna och klimatkontot kan ses ha verkat som stöd för familjerna. Till viss del har även kommunikationsplattformarna, Åre kommun och att vara del av gruppen utgjort stöd för familjernas minskade klimatpåverkan. Resultatet visar också att projektet gett effekter såsom avsatt tid till att fokusera på klimatområdet och förändrade beteenden och tankesätt, samt att det spridits till andra. De lärdomar som kan dras av projektet är att det är viktigt att skapa grupptillhörighet, delaktighet och tid för samtal, men även tydlighet kring upplägget och målen och återkoppla/följa upp för att bibehålla motivationen. De svårigheter som identifierats genom resultatet rör brist på motivation och återkoppling, men även delar som tid, pengar, tillgänglighet och att stå emot samhället, våga vara obekväm.

    Studiens resultat är inte generaliserbart för alla klimatprojekt. Åre kommun påvisade goda intentioner med projektet från start, men brister i upplägget gjorde att projektet inte uppfyllde dess mål. Positiva effekter skapades dock och lärdomar kan dras. Samtliga teorier kan kopplas till och stärka resultatet vad gäller vikten av återkoppling, tydlighet, målformulerande och förändrat tankesätt och attityd.

    An analysis of energy and material flows has been elaborated for the Swedish region Jämtland with the aim of monitoring and comparing regional sustainability by following the work energy flow method developed in a study of the Danish island of Samsø (Nielsen & Jørgensen, 2011). In the region of Jämtland about 46,000 TJ of energy flows into society, of which 88% is renewable. From this an amount corresponding to 30,800 TJ is exported as electricity from the region, while another 410 TJ is exported as waste to be incinerated. The remaining part, about 15,200 TJ (63% renewable), drives Jämtland. From an energy flow perspective, the most important production from the region, apart from electricity production, is biomass from the forest: 49,000 TJ estimated as energy content in the biomass harvested. Another 55,000 TJ is added to the standing biomass every year as forest growth (only productive forest land area has been calculated). Some suggested indices of sustainability have been calculated and Jämtland shows high values. However, it will be a challenge to transform the quite large transport sector of Jämtland, and therefore the potential to become fully sustainable (ref to indexes used for the Samsø study) might not be quite as high. In order to reduce the use of non-renewable energy, a major conversion of the transport fleet is needed, and this should be given high priority. The private sector is the largest single user of non-renewable energy (2,200 TJ). One successful transition is the Swedish diesel mix with 19% FAME/HVO derived from vegetable or animal sources and regarded as renewable. The consumption of FAME/HVO is predicted to increase significantly, increasing the importance of the forest as a source. A sustainability analysis based at work energy flows shows for both Samsø and Jämtland that large natural resources producing a high work energy output combined with low work energy use due to low population density, gives high sustainability indicators. This indicates that regions with high population density and the absence of natural resources (high import), as in most regions in the world, will show low sustainability indicators.

    This study presents a regional model showing the balance of carbon dioxide and methane fluxes in the Swedish county Jämtland, applying a Global Warming Potential 20-year time horizon (GWP20) to meet the Paris agreement horizon and regional policy goals. The results clearly show the necessity to take both anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic emissions into consideration in analyses to be able to make proper priorities in future action strategies. The total annual impact from Jämtland calculated as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq) is an uptake of 2.4 Mton (19 ton per capita). Jämtland shows large annual uptakes in forests (12.7 Mton CO2), but also large emissions of methane (80 kton corresponding to 6.7 Mton CO2eq), mainly from lakes, mires and ruminants. Anthropogenic carbon Greenhous gas emissions are dominated by transportation, working machines and consumption (mainly imported indirect emissions).

    As a complement to GWP also the Absolute Global Temperature Change Potential (AGTP) as degree K response, is presented per sector and total for Jämtland County, for yearly emissions (as a pulse) and continuous emissions over 200 years. A yearly pulse from Jämtland gives a temperature response of about 0 K after 10 years and about −4 μK (cooling effect) after about 50 years). Using both GWP and AGTP as indicators improves the possibilities to find ways how to optimize regional climate policies to reduce global warming until a specific year.

    Strategies and action plans should be developed focusing on the following:

    - Reduced regional transportation and consumption activity.

    - Increased (prioritized) use of renewable fuels for working machines in forestry and agriculture, as well as for heavy trucks.

    - Evaluate the potential to reduce emissions of methane from wetlands and mires.

    - Increase/optimize carbon dioxide assimilation in forests.

    Carbon Dioxide (CO2), as one of the major anthropogenic greenhouse gases, is widely acknowledged to contribute to global warming and climate change. Historically, the major focus on the role of the aquatic environment in the carbon cycle has been on the atmosphere-ocean exchange. More recent findings suggest the importance of freshwater (lakes, rivers and streams) as a source for atmospheric CO2. The freshwater contribution is, however, poorly understood, mainly due to a paucity of data, especially from running waters.

    To address this issue, Eddy Covariance (EC) measurements in a large boreal river in Northern Sweden (Indalsälven), are being made as part of a two-year long continual study of the carbon dioxide exchange between the air and water. This is one of the first known studies of its kind where EC measurements are conducted in a river setting. Continual data acquisition began in April 2018, monitoring a variety of general meteorological parameters, turbulent emissions of carbon dioxide, latent, and sensible heat, together with water-side measurements of CO2. The aim of the study is to investigate the temporal control on river carbon dioxide emissions covering timescales from hours to seasons.

    This thesis focuses on the influence of the wind on the air-water CO2 exchange during the first quarter of 2019. The data indicates a positive influence of wind speed on the gas transfer velocity, k, with a threshold between a low dependency and high dependency state occurring around 5 ms-1. A further influence of wind stress, decreased by the alignment of current flow with wind direction is also demonstrated, indicating that higher wind speeds are required when flow is aligned with the wind direction to attain similar levels of k600 than for stationary water. The average value of k600 for over-water wind directions for the four month period considered was 11.7 cm.h-1, which is towards the upper end of the range of values expected for such a river from the existing literature.

    These findings help to provide clarity on the processes controlling the CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and boreal rivers, which can be used to improve the accuracy of carbon flux predictions on a global scale.

    Environmental Science aims to study the relationships between human beings influence on and dependence of nature, the interaction and integration of ecological, social and technical systems as well as the strategies for sustainable use of natural resources. The linking of social, ecological and economical aspects in Environmental Science can provide useful tools for the study, management and conservation of freshwater crayfish from a broad social perspective. Therefore, it is of interest to explore the relationships between Environmental Science and Astacology. By analysing the aims of the International Association of Astacology and the content of some volumes of Freshwater Crayfish from an Environmental Science perspective we found that Astacology is operating within the field of Environmental Science. The focus is mainly on identifying underlying mechanisms of environmental issues. We will point out unexplored scientific perspectives and propose some advice of how to study freshwater crayfish from a broad systems perspective.
