Visible men and elusive women2011In: International Journal of Historical Archaeology, ISSN 1092-7697, E-ISSN 1573-7748, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 10-29Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Early gender archaeology formulated two statements: men are visible, women are invisible, and men work in hard materials, women work in soft materials. We discuss these dichotomies in connection with nineteenth-century folklore and an excavated eighteenth-century cottage at a summer-farm. We conclude that much of the gendered order-of-work tasks broke down in pragmatic day-to-day life, especially by women crossing the gender border. However, social chaos was held at bay by ritual acts and magic objects.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Ethnicity is a conspicious and controversial concept. In the present series of papers read at a Nordic workshop in June 1997 the concept of ethnicity is discussed in contexts ranging from Viking Age trade in Russia to the Late Mesolithic Finnish Comb Ceramic culture. There seems to be a tendency among the authors to avoid the term "ethnicity", instead favouring terms like "identity" and the old-fashioned "Culture".

In addition parpers on feminist archaeology and the view of female roles in the public use of archaeology are presented

Humanister föreläser om Wales, Irland och Jämtland1998Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The series of articles is an edited selection of seminar papers in archaeology, English literature, ethnology, French literature, German literature, history, history of art, Nordic languages, and Swedish literature. They stress the analysis of texts: written text, prictures and exhibitions. The common perspective is postmodern, or poststructuralist, and it is that of young students of the Arts - female and male.

    Abstract [en]

Charcoal production sites have been excavated within contract archaeology in Sweden since the 1990s. The excavations have been of poor quality, and the sites are notoriously difficult to date. However, the number of dated charcoal stacks from the Middle Ages is increasing, including types that were once thought to have been introduced as Walloon industrial know-how only in the 17th century. If the sites are excavated thoroughly, they hold the potential for discussing the life-patterns of the charcoal burners from material culture and anthropological theory

    Abstract [en]

The content of the main daily newspaper in Sweden, Dagens Nyheter, in 1994 is compared with that of 1985. The obvious differences concern the view of archaeologyas subject to ordinances designed to preserve Sweden's cultural heritage and a less manifest emphasis on field work and the Viking Age.Dagens Ny heter seems to regard its task as concerns archaeology as educationalvis-ä-vis its readers, not as critically observing, analysing, and commenting on variousarchaeological activities. Archaeology is news and entertainment, and onlyrarely a subject for public debate. Generally, the same is true of Forskning och Framsteg, the leading populär scientific journal in Sweden. As compared with Dagens Nyheter the archaeology of this journal is more international, and more marginal in relation to the mainstreamof archaeological research in Sweden. The latter is due to the dependence of Forskning och Framsteg on its financiers.
