    Abstract [en]

The premise of this chapter is that the potential of poetry as a means of cross-disciplinary learning can only be fully realized if the specific sustainability of the poetic texts is taken into consideration. Using Theodor W. Adorno’s often misinterpreted statement about poetry after Auschwitz as a starting point, this chapter elaborates on poetry as a certain subjective way of reaching the objective. This relation between the subjective and the objective also indicates that there can be different ways of reading a poem in a cross-disciplinary context—concentrating either on the message of the content or on the message of the form. As an example of these different kinds of reading the author uses the popular and often anthologized poem “Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti. The argument here is that the truth of poetry is never fixed and that the ability to produce different readings can function as a “messenger” between the subjective and the objective realms, and thus between different epistemologies and subject contents.

The Ore, the Forest, and the Hydroelectric Power: Material Strategies in Contemporary Northern Swedish Poetry2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The paper focuses on the ways in which contemporary poetry of northern Sweden may voice issues of materiality in a postcolonial context. The study aims to explore the unstable boundaries between human and nonhuman, between garbage and commodity, and between the local and the global. The poetry is read in the historical light of a specific literary tradition emanating from the northern part of Sweden, where the landscape is configured by the two predominant depictions of it in 20th century literature: the exotic wilderness and the early industrial exploitation of this wilderness; the former being conceived as a utopian image and the latter as a dystopian vision. The paper thus addresses questions concerning the possibilities of reading young contemporary poetry in the context of the traditional literature of northern Sweden in a postcolonial perspective.

The Word and the World: The Material Ecopoetics of David Vikgren2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on two collections of poetry by the Swedish poet David Vikgren, Folkmun and Skogen, malmen, vattenkraften, reading for the ways in which the poems voice the issues of materiality and how they may shape ‘narratives of matter’ – reflecting the world in the word and the word in the world. Conceptualizing language as matter in the poetry of David Vikgren the study aims to explore the unstable boundaries between human and nonhuman, between garbage and commodity, and between the local and the global. The concept takes its departure in the two predominant depictions of the landscape of Northern Sweden in 20th century literature: the exotic wilderness and the early industrial exploitation of this wilderness. The material impact of these literary texts can be examined in social, economic, and ecological terms, shaping the landscape as well as being shaped by it. In relation to these traditional texts the poetry of David Vikgren is perceived as part of the discursive practices shaping society’s physical and cultural transformations. The paper thus addresses questions concerning the possibilities of reading young contemporary poetry in the context of the traditional literature of northern Sweden, as well as examining the ways that environmental issues are present in this kind of poetry. Is it possible to detect a specific ‘choreography of matter’ in the contemporary poetry using the northern landscape as a trope?

Människan i skogen, skogen i människan: Miun Research Exhibition2021Artistic output (Unrefereed)
