Musikutbildningen och examination vid Kungl. Musikaliska Akademien under "Pehr Frigel-epoken", 1796-18421994Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this lecentiate disseratation music education and examination at the Royal Academy of Music (KMA) during the period 1796-1842, hear called the Frigel era, is described. The theory of culture provides a general perspective for the disign of the dissertation and the illustration of the issues. A model of analysis, which is a method of investigation rather than a finished model, forms a point ot departure in my attempt to demonstrate that education and examination had a double effect in society. It meant a cultural pluralism rather than a secularization.

Education during the Frigel era starts with an Elementary Singing School, but after 1815 its professional aim becomes gradually more obvious. Subjects during the period in question are the theory of music, singing, piano and organ. The examination for a post at school, at sixth form college or senior high school and in church is extensive. During a twenty-year period 80 music teachers, 90 precentors and 600 organists are examined.

Important issues discussed in this essay concern education content, education quality and examination demands related to school and church activities and also to the improtance of education in the development of society.

    Abstract [en]

The war poetry of Erik Axel Karlfeldt (1864-1931) is a neglected part of the poet's work. The aim of this article is to discuss three poems from Flora och Bellona (1918): "Det röda korset" ("The Red Cross"), "Svart Jul" ("Black Christmas") and "En pesthymn" ("A Hymn of Pestilence"). Attention is paid to the ideological level of the poems, but also to their poetic structure. The poems are related to Peter Hallberg's discussion of Karlfeldt's archaistic imagery, to Esaias Tegnér's "Svea", but also to the contemporary political poetry of outspoken nationalists and socialists. Compared to the explicit political poetry, Karlfeldt's poetry is complex, often ambivalent in its criticism of both belligerents and alternately displaying despair and optimism. "En pesthymn" can be seen as a turning point, mirroring the outbreak in 1918 of the Finnish Civil War. In this poem, the ambivalent moral judgements of the poet's preceding war poetry are replaced by unequivocal political support for the "Whites".

At the end of the day… An ELF perspective on lexical chunks in spoken business English.2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Since Sinclair (1991) identified “the idiom principle”, lexical chunks, i.e. frequently occurring clusters of words, have been recognized as an important part of language learning. This importance has been highlighted as advances in computer software have made it easier to identify patterns in language use, and most published English teaching materials are now informed by the analysis of large corpora of native speaker language. However, given that the most widespread use of English language throughout the world takes the form of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), i.e. English used as a common means of communication among speakers from different first-language backgrounds, there is a strong argument for examining the lexical chunks used in this context when considering students’ needs.

This study uses VOICE (the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English), a corpus of spoken ELF interactions, to examine the occurrence of language chunks in ELF in the professional domain. A subcorpus of VOICE comprising of occurring in the professional domain (business, organizational and research contexts) was created, representing approximately 830,000 tokens of transcribed oral text. Recurring lexical chunks were identified using Wordsmith Tools (Scott 2012), and categorized according to type and function. The types of lexical chunk occurring most frequently proved to be vague expressions, e.g. “and so on” and discourse markers such as “at the end of the day”. The pedagogical implications of these findings are considered, concerning whether and how published materials might be supplemented to better meet the needs of those students who expect to use English in an ELF context.

    Abstract [en]

Early gender archaeology formulated two statements: men are visible, women are invisible, and men work in hard materials, women work in soft materials. We discuss these dichotomies in connection with nineteenth-century folklore and an excavated eighteenth-century cottage at a summer-farm. We conclude that much of the gendered order-of-work tasks broke down in pragmatic day-to-day life, especially by women crossing the gender border. However, social chaos was held at bay by ritual acts and magic objects.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

In the urban regions of Guayaquil and Cartagena, strongly marked by the presence of slavery, the "castas", slaves and freedmen (whether coloured or not), compose the essential of the "plebs" who keep worrying the "decent people". After the Independence, the term "people" imposes itself, with a certain ambiguity. If, on one side, it is exalted as the "sovereign people" in the elites' speeches, on the other side, its manifestations of resistance and revolt turn these same people into the heirs of ancient "plebs".

Una tragedia a la colombiana2009Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This article deals with a case of confrontation between the state and the autonomy of a community that resists the national state and brings forth its judicial demands before international institutions of law. This situation implies important political and judicial problems. Here we deal foremost with the problematic of conflictive relations between state sovereignty and the autonomy of the community. The latter enters into conflict with the aspiration of the state to be the sole source of political power and law. That there in fact exists different locus of power means we need to think in terms of forces in constant struggle that questions the sovereignty of the state.

The community of San José de Apartadó has been able to establish its own foundation, elect its authorities and create a system that rules communal life. The community has also developed the capacity to represent itself in both national and international contexts.

Adult versus peer input: Differences in the language of six-year-olds who have been to day care centres versus those who have been at home with an adult2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to find out if there were any detectable differences in the language and language use between children who had been at home with an adult, versus children who had been at day care regularly before they started school. Eight six-year-olds, four from each group, were interviewed and their answers compared to each other. The results pointed to a slight difference in word choices and sentence structure and also a greater difference in the past tense verb forms. Children with a day care background tended to discuss and interact more with their peers, though with simpler sentences and several incorrect verb forms, while the stay-at-home children used more complex sentences and had a higher rate of correct past tense verb forms. The conclusion from this study suggests that children need both adult and peer input to develop correct language and the necessary skills for interaction.
