    Towards New Levels of Creating/Improving and Understanding Value in Swedish Municipalities: A Review of Research on Understanding and Creating Value in Municipal Quality Development by Qualitative Approaches (and Co-Creation)2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    Quality management and Lean initiatives are currently widespread in the Swedish municipal sector. It is also made clear that all Lean initiatives should be initiated to benefit the customer and not for internal organizational reasons. However, the practices currently used for understanding value creation in the municipalities tend to focus heavily on the use of numerical, quantitative approaches. In sharp contrast, the growing field of, for example, design thinking argue that qualitative approaches are key when it comes to getting closer to the citizens, establishing new levels of understanding and thereby inspiring new and better solutions. In sum, it seems likely that municipalities are struggling with developing quality due to relying, in too one-sided on the use of quantitative rather than qualitative approaches to understand and spark new levels of value creation. The purpose of this paper is to contribute with a review of research concerning qualitative approaches for understanding and co-creating value in municipal quality development.

     

    Methodology/Approach The paper is based on a literature review.

     

    Findings The paper provides an overview of previous research concerning practices for evaluating and understanding value creation in the context of a municipal quality development.

    This overview is of value for practitioners within the context, as well as researchers that wants to contribute within this area.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine what happens with the internal view an organisation has on information management when a holistic view is diminished into a blinkered view and the consequences it conveys for the customer. The customer consequences are divided into two parts – creation of external customers’ values and creation of value for the internal customer explored in terms of efficiency.

    Methodology/approach – Interviews with both outsourced co-workers and project leaders still in the organization.

    Findings – The organisations lack of listening to the external customer affects all three areas lifted in the analysis. The studied organisations have great opportunities for developing their process for producing TI, both regarding their mutual relationship as well as in regards to the external customer with the help of Lean and by applying a more holistic view on the production of Technical Information.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of classical style roller skis' grip (static friction coefficients, μ S) on cross-country skiers' oxygen consumption and leg forces during treadmill roller skiing, when using the diagonal stride and kick double poling techniques. The study used ratcheted wheel roller skis from the open market and a uniquely designed roller ski with an adjustable camber and grip function. The results showed significantly (P≤0.05) higher oxygen consumption (∼14%), heart rate (∼7%), and lower propulsive forces from the legs during submaximal exercise and a shorter time to exhaustion (∼30%) in incremental maximal tests when using roller skis with a μ S similar to on-snow skiing, while there was no difference between tests when using different pairs of roller skis with a similar, higher μ S. Thus, we concluded that oxygen consumption (skiing economy), propulsive leg forces, and performance time are highly changed for the worse when using roller skis with a lower μ S, such as for on-snow skiing with grip-waxed cross-country skis, in comparison to ratcheted wheel roller skis with several times higher μ S.

    Abstract [en]

    Roller skis are used by cross-country skiers, biathletes and ski-orienteers for their snow-free training and in roller ski competitions. Additionally, much of the current sports research into the physiology and biomechanics of crosscountry skiing is conducted indoors on treadmills using roller skis. For elite athletes, the differences in performance are quite small, thus emphasising the importance of knowing the roller skis' rolling resistance coefficient, especially in connection to research and roller ski competitions. The purpose of this study was to develop a roller ski rolling resistance measurement system (P-RRMS) that is portable and therefore useful in different contexts and locations. The P-RRMS was designed as a small treadmill, equipped with roller ski stabilizing lateral supports and a screwed bar for applying different vertical loads on the roller ski. The design uses only one force sensor, with possible measurements of three directions of force and torque around three axes. The weight of the P-RRMS is 100 kg and it is equipped with wheels to facilitate transportation.

    Abstract [en]

    Cross-country skiers use roller skis for their snow-free training with the aim of imitating skiing on snow. Also, exercise laboratories evaluate the biomechanics and physiology of cross-country skiing using roller skis on a treadmill. The roller skis on the market that are constructed for use in the classical style are equipped with a front and a back wheel, one of which has a ratchet to enable it to grip the surface when diagonal striding and kick double poling (static friction). The aim of this study was to investigate static friction coefficients (μS) of ratcheted wheel roller skis, and compare the results to the μS reported from skiing on snow with grip-waxed cross-country skis. Also, a new type of roller ski with a camber and adjustable grip function was evaluated. The results showed that ratcheted wheel roller skis, on a treadmill rubber mat and on dry and wet asphalt surfaces, reached μS values that were five to eight times greater than the values reported from on-snow skiing with grip-waxed cross-country skis. For the roller skis with a camber and adjustable grip function, the μs could be varied from no grip at all up to the level of the tested ratcheted wheel roller skis.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare skiing economy and gross efficiency in cross-country skiers of different performance levels, ages and genders; male recreational skiers and elite senior and junior cross-country skiers of both genders. The skiers performed tests involving roller skiing on a treadmill using the gear 3 and diagonal stride techniques. The elite crosscountry skiers were found to have better skiing economy and higher gross efficiency (5-18%) compared with the recreational skiers (p < 0.05) and the senior elite had better economy and higher efficiency (4-5%) than their junior counterparts (p < 0.05), whereas no differences could be found between the genders. Also, large ranges in economy and gross efficiency were found in all groups. It was concluded that, in addition to v̇O2peak, skiing economy and gross efficiency have a great influence on the differences in performance times between recreational and junior and senior elite cross-country skiers, as well as between individual skiers within the different categories. Thus, we recommend crosscountry skiers at all performance levels to test not only v̇O2peak, but also skiing economy and efficiency.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the resistance (RES) to breathing in metabolic systems used for the distribution and measurement of pulmonary gas exchange. A mechanical lung simulator was used to standardize selected air flow rates ( , L/s). The delta pressure (∆p, Pa) between ambient air and the air inside the equipment was measured in the breathing valve’s mouthpiece adapter for four metabolic systems and four types of breathing valves. RES for the inspiratory and expiratory sides was calculated as RES = ∆p / , Pa/L/s. The results for RES showed significant (p < 0.05) between-group variance among the tested metabolic systems, as well as the breathing valves and between most of the completed . The lowest RES among the metabolic systems was found for a Douglas Bag system, with approximately half of the RES compared to the automated metabolic systems. The automated systems were found to have higher RES already at low  in comparison to previous recommendations. For the hardware components, the highest RES was found for the breathing valves while the lowest RES was found for the hoses. Conclusion: The results showed that RES in metabolic systems can be minimized through conscious choices of system design and hardware components.

    Aktuell forskning visar att svenska skolresultat är nedåtgående, där bristande systematiskt kvalitetsarbete pekas ut som en möjlig anledning till att eleverna inte når de grundläggande målen. Flens kommun var en av de kommuner som uppmanats av Skolverket att utveckla sitt systematiska kvalitetsarbete och vidare initierade kommunen uppbyggnaden av ett kvalitetsledningssystem. Studiens syfte var att erhålla en djupare förståelse för medarbetarna i Flens kommuns upplevelser av uppbyggnaden. Studien sökte genom ett kvalitativt perspektiv, svar på frågor kring vad ett kvalitetsledningssystem kan definieras som, vilka moment som är betydelsefulla samt vilka deltagare som upplevs betydelsefulla vid uppbyggandet. Resultaten från de båda sammanställdes i fyra kategorier: Anpassning till kontext, Stabil process, Management och Allas delaktighet. I slutsatsen framkom att ett kvalitetsledningssystem ska vara ett stöd i det dagliga arbetet, ett system som leder mot kvalitet, där alla görs delaktiga. Som stöd i kvalitetsarbetet föreslogs befintliga modeller och teorier.

    Abstract [en]

    Participation is an important aspect when it comes to continuous improvements. Participation increases quality and creates support among employees and is a tool for achieving successful quality work. Companies need prerequisites for creating participation, and in successful companies this success is characterized by the creation of participation and motivation among employees. The aim of the study was to describe how production supervisors create opportunities for participation in improvement processes. The method used was a qualitative inductive approach from a life-world perspective. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight production supervisors and qualitative content analysis was used to examine texts to find sentence entetities and categories. Fishbone diagrams were created as a complement to the interviews. The results and the analysis indicated two categories, prerequisites and limitations to create participation in improvement work. This showed that there are difficulties when it comes to interpreting the term participation and even more difficult to specify the tools inuse. In the future it is of great importance to ensure that the research around the creation of participation is in focus.

    Är nöjda kunder automatisk lojala kunder? Det krävs mer än bara en positiv upplevelse av servicekvalitet för att nå hög lojalitet bland sina kunder. Trots att kunderna upplever servicen lika, kan deras bedömning av tillfredsställelse variera p.g.a. olika förväntningar och prioriteringar. Upplevd servicekvalitet och tillfredsställelse är de första faktorer som påverkar lojalitet. Men det krävs också förtroende för såväl företaget som också på individnivån till företagets representanter, innan kunderna vågar binda sig till en relation med en leverantör. Allt detta påverkar relationen, som med tiden kan utvecklas och fördjupas. Det är alltså servicekvalitet, tillfredsställelse, förtroende samt beredskap att binda sig till en relation och relationskvalitet som påverkar lojalitet i olika utsträckning inom olika branscher.

    Den empiriska undersökningen som genomfördes i form av en webbenkät bland kunder hos ett mindre Business-to-Business (B2B) företag visar att segmentering baserad på lojalitet är ett effektivt sätt att skapa förståelse för hur lojala och icke-lojala kunder ser på företaget och deras servicekvalitet. Segmentering baserar på några extra frågor som mäter lojalitet. Trots låg antal svar (17 svar) är resultat enhetlig för varje segment och visar därmed vilka brister som bör åtgärdas.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study, with it ́s base in Total Quality Managment, was to contribute with knowledge about the minuicipal leadership and the proactive crisismanagment. The method that has been used has been hermenetuic, inductive and qulitative method. A multiple casestudy has been made through three interviews with crisis coordinators in the municipal sector. The questions in the study have been semistructurated. The questionnaire was made with the influence of Appreciative Inquiry. The conclusion was that the municipal leadership have strengths and opportunities to development in the proactive crisimanagment. There was strengths and opportunities in all six principels in Total Quality Management. These strenghts and opportunities in the municipal leadership could contribute to a positive developmen of the crisismanagment and create a safer community. Exampels of perceived strenghts was municipal leaders that alowed participation in risk- and vulnerabillity assessments and educations. Exampels of development areas of municipal leaders was that leaders schould contribute to openness, responsiveness, participation and discussions regarding crisis management.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the study is partly to understand how systematic quality management can be implemented at the classroom level and partly what it means to apply it from a student perspective, and to compare student progression with that of a control group. As a result of this, this study contributes with a method on how quality management can be implemented at the classroom level. This working method is named Co-Creative Learning - using IT to Visualise Progression.

    This is an action research study that encompassed questionnaires, focus groups and a time series. Three assignments from 65 students were assessed in the study, out of which two were compared to those from the control group.

    To enhance reliability and validity the selected control group were from the same catchment area, had qualified teacher with corresponding number of working years who also worked with formative assessment and visualising criteria. Two assignments were identical for both groups, and thus, the two groups' results could be compared.

    To minimise the effects of the presence of a teacher during evaluation, the students were not brought together to form focus groups, until after the grades were communicated. They then reflected on continuous improvement efforts, quality, inclusion, understanding objectives, perceived progression and the use of IT.

    Before the concluding discussion the collected data sets were analysed separately. The results showed the difference in both student experience and progression. The main differences lay in the student experience: where change primarily affected the students’ involvement; the extent to which the students were satisfied students with their own development.

    In the time series, the differences were not as high as in the student experience. The studied group started at a slightly lower grade, and completed at a slightly higher grade, than the control group. It was mainly the boys who accounted for the progression. One reason for could be that the girls

    already held high average grades (leaving little room for progression). Compared to the control group, the differences with the boys in the studied group remains.

    The conclusions drawn are thus that the method enhances progression, but that the main benefits are harvested from the enhanced educational experience of the students.

    Abstract [en]

    On behalf of the companies, AIM Sweden and NewSoTech have the possibility to adapt a product to the additive manufacturing ben investigated. With AIM Sweden's expertise in additive manufacturing of titanium parts and NewSoTechs method for surface hardening of titanium, TiSurf ®, an opportunity for cooperation were identified. NewSoTech presented a piston to a motocross rear damper as a possible product to adapt to the manufacturing method. This formed the basis of the completed thesis. The aim of the work has been to explore the process of additive manufacturing of a damper piston and partly to generate a basis for further cooperation. This determined the objectives; to develop prototypes and test and analyze these, provide suggestions to design variations and develop a methodology for implementation of design variations. The work began with investigating the pistons function; this were done through a theoretical study and by modeling the piston with CAD software. Thereafter, the project were carried out by examining and thereby develop a process to adjust the piston to additive manufacturing. The opening process was divided into five stages, defining the problem, generating concepts, designing, manufacturing and analysis. These steps were repeated in whole or in part and could iteratively be improved. The first phase was to define the pistons design-related limitations and freedoms. In the concept generation were six different concepts developed that were considered interesting for the adaptation. These concepts were not intended to optimize the function of the piston, but only to show the potential of the manufacturing method. In the design process a methodology to easily implement design changes was developed. In the fabrication phase pistons were prepared and manufactured additively and then the necessary post-processing were performed. A full analysis of the pistons could not be carried out within the project. The result was a process of adjustment of the damper piston to the additive manufacturing method with the overlying process described above with added sub-steps identified as necessary for the process. The conclusions were that more work needs to be to perform on a complete analysis of the pistons, refine and develop the preparations for production and to evaluate and refine post processing methods.

    En genomförd Nöjd kund-index (NKI) undersökning av samtliga landets kommuner visar stora skillnader mellan kommunerna inom myndighetsområdet miljö- och hälsa. Syftet med examensarbetet var att få en djupare förståelse för hur miljö- och hälsoskydd kan bedriva ett kvalitetsarbete med fokus på hög extern kundnöjdhet.

    I examensarbetet jämförs tre kommuner som placerat sig på olika nivåer i NKI-undersökningen. De tre kommunerna som ingick i studien var Kalmar, Kristianstad och Växjö. Frågeställningar som studien utgick ifrån var likheter och skillnader samt framgångsfaktorer i kommunernas kvalitetsarbete. Metod som användes för datainsamling var kvalitativ intervju med chef och fokusgrupp med medarbetarna vid respektive kommun.Resultatet från intervjun och fokusgruppen sammanfördes till teman för respektive kommun. Det visade delvis lika delvis olika teman för kommunernas kvalitetsarbete med fokus på kundnöjdhet. Kalmar fick teman: kvalitetssystem & struktur, förebyggande arbete & processer, samarbete & involvering, öppenhet, motiverade medarbetare & eget ansvar. Kristianstad: kvalitetssäkring och struktur, ständiga förbättringar, tydlighet & bemötande samt delaktighet & engagemang. Växjö avslutningsvis hade: förändrings- och förbättringsarbete, process & struktur, bemötande & tillgänglighet samt ansvar & delaktighet.I slutsatserna framkom att kommunernas kvalitetsarbete inte skiljde sig i så stor utsträckning. Framgångsfaktorer var att involvera kunderna genom branschorganisationer, att arbetssätt för att nå likabehandling är viktigt liksom att använda sig av olika verktyg och arbetssätt.     The aim of this study has been to contribute with knowledge regarding in what way a processorientation can improve the way public sector manage contracts. As a method a qualitative multicasestudy was used. Three municipalities, and the way they manage contracts with residential carehomes for children and young persons (HVB) was studied. The study showed a complex situation surrounding the carecontract management in public sector. As a way of handling this complex situation the municipalities would gain from using a systems thinking, with the values, tools and workmethods that characterizes Total Quality Management. With an increased processorientation using processmanagement as a tool, the municipalities could improve the quality in their process for managing contracts.

    Detta examensarbete är skrivet för WSP Sverige AB och syftar till att undersöka om införande av ledningssystem på företag innebär ökad upplevd kvalitet för de interna processerna. Detta genom att försöka få svar på om upplevda kvalitetsförbättringar för interna kunder kan mätas samt om enkätundersökningar är ett bra sätt att mäta upplevda kvalitetsförbättringar för de interna kunderna.

    Studien utgår ifrån kvalitetsutveckling och dess hörnstenar samt kvalitetsdimensioner för tjänstekvalitet. Den leder sedan vidare in på de interna kunderna i organisationer och hur arbete med processbaserad verksamhetsutveckling kan bedrivas. Ledningssystem och införande av desamma beskrivs för att sedan följas upp av det förändrings- och förbättringsarbete som erfordras för att lyckas. Därefter redogörs det för mätning, styrning och kundtillfredsställelse.

    Forskningsdesign för studien är en både kvalitativ och kvantitativ tvärsnittsdesign. Den kvalitativa undersökningen utfördes i ett första steg genom två stycken semistrukturerade intervjuer för att få information om bakgrund, uppbyggnad, syfte samt tillvägagångssättet vid införandet av WSPs ledningssystem. Denna följdes av en kvantitativ undersökning utförd i form av en enkät som är tyngdpunkten för studien. Enkätundersökningen ämnar till att mäta kundupplevd kvalitet som skillnaden mellan hur arbetet i studerad verksamhet utfördes innan införandet av ett ledningssystem och hur arbetet utförs efter att systemet är infört.

    Studien visar på att respondenter med en positiv ingående inställning till systemet vid besvarade av enkätundersökningen är benägna att svara positivt på de frågor som ställs. Att tolka av resultatet kan upplevda kvalitetsförbättringar för interna kunder mätas och den höga svarsfrekvensen tyder på att en enkätundersökning med kategorifrågor är ett bra sätt att mäta upplevda kvalitetsförbättringar för de interna kunderna vid införandet av ett ledningssystem.

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide a review of the impact on culture (attitudes, values and assumptions) among both healthcare professionals, as well as users, when involving users for improving quality in healthcare.

    Methodology/Approach: The paper is based on an extensive, narrative literature review considering studies that included professional’s and users experiences of user involvement in quality improvement. The included articles were analyzed using an interpretive, along with a deductive, approach according to a theoretical framework.

    Findings: The results indicate that there is currently limited research focusing on the impact of user involvement in quality improvement processes regarding professionals’ and users’ attitudes, values and/or assumptions. The articles identified during the study provides situations and statements, during the process of development, which can be interpreted as change in the culture. Although few articles specifically draw conclusions on user involvement as a “tool” for cultural change, the authors interpret several findings which strengthens that theory.

    Research Limitation/implication: Research published in other databases could have been missed. The authors have tried to avoid this by using a snowball method reading references in identified articles.

    Originality/Value of paper: The review provides a platform for both future research and the development of current practice within the area. There have been literature reviews showing obstacles and enablers when using patients, users and relatives in quality improvement work, but few which investigates cultural change.

    This study aimed to identify what a suitable model for Information Governance should contain. In order to find out, I analyzed which models people commonly used, which challenges people expressed and to what extent Quality Management supported dealing with these challenges.

    The study mostly relied on literature studies. The presence of values, key temes and challenges have been noted and analyzed. A questionnaire was sent out to 80 IG-professionals and interwievs were held with four people with in-depth experience from working with information Governance. In order to define the scope for this study ” Quality Management has been delimited to values and key themes used in Excellence Models and the corner stones of TQM.

    The analyzes indicates that the expressed challenges to a great extent could be met with values and key themes present in Quality Management. Models dealing with Information Governance and BPM, Business Process Management, could also support dealing with the challenges, esp. dealing with stakeholders.

    Purpose - The purpose was to examine the relationship between Lean values, Lean leadership and perceived co-worker health.Methodology/approach – A questionnaire used at a Swedish municipality that has been working with quality improvements for 20 years and with Lean for seven years was analyzed. More than 800 co-workers were asked to fill in the questionnaire which had been designed and earlier tested to measure the presence of a number of Lean values and Lean leadership as well as self-reported perceived health.Findings – The results show a medium positive relationship between Lean values, Lean leadership and the co-workers’ perception of their health. Customer focus presents the highest mean value, the lowest standard deviation and the highest correlation with co-worker health, which is interesting as the investigated organization is a municipality.

    Many Quality Management approaches, such as Lean, are deficit-based and focus on problems and how to overcome them and another way to approach this could be to focus on possibilities.  When focusing on problems instead of possibilities, organizations are prevented from using their full potential which leads to decreased organizational capacity. Appreciative Inquiry is, in contrast to a deficit-based approach, a positive approach to change. The problems should not be ignored but, by focusing on strengths, this approach could be more effective when it comes to promoting better workplace health. 

    Earlier research has examined if Lean values affect co-workers’ perceived health and found a connection. Even though the relationships between co-workers’ perceived health and Lean leadership and also Lean values were not very strong, they are all positively correlated. What happens however if we introduce Appreciative Inquiry to see in what way it links to Lean values and co-worker perceived health?

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore if and how Appreciative Inquiry correlates with Lean values and co-workers’ perceived health.

    Methodology/approach – To investigate the relationship between Lean, Appreciative Inquiry and perceived co-worker health, a questionnaire was developed based on two previously tested questionnaires.  The new questionnaire was filled in by 841 co-workers at a Swedish municipality and was then analysed to explore in what way Appreciative Inquiry correlates with a number of Lean values as well as perceived co-worker health.

The variable ‘Continuous improvements’ relates most to ‘Appreciative Inquiry’ followed by ‘Eliminating Waste’ as those variables can be considered to have a large positive relationship. ‘Supportive Leadership’ and ‘System view’ have a medium positive relation to ‘Appreciative Inquiry’ and the variables ‘Health’ and ‘Customer focus’ have a small relation to Appreciative Inquiry in this context.

    The purpose of this paper is to compare health related values within Quality Management with Key Principles of Communicative Leadership in order to see if Communicative leaders also promote healthy co-workers.  A literature review was conducted within the area of Communicative Leadership and within the values of health related Quality Management. The principles within Communicative leadership were compared with the underlying dimensions within the health related values ‘Leadership Commitment’ and Participation of everybody’. The analysis shows that the underlying dimensions within both of the health related Quality Management values ‘Participation of everybody’ and ‘Leadership commitment’ were related to some of the Key Principles of Communicative Leadership. The results can help Communicative Leaders to emphasize the Key Principles that also promote healthy co-workers. The results can also help leaders that already have healthy co-workers to increase leaders’ communication competence within organizations.

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe leaders’ views on how Communicative Leadership influences co-worker health by comparing their opinions with the health-related values within Quality Management.

    Design/methodology/approach - A multinational manufacturing organization that has been working with Communicative Leadership for several years was investigated. 21 managers trained in Communicative Leadership were interviewed and asked about their views on how their communication influences both the well-being of their co-workers and the working environment. Various communication behaviors and communication methodologies emerged from the interviews and were then analyzed versus the health-related Quality Management dimensions.

    Findings - The result shows concrete communication behavior and methodologies that influence co-worker well-being and the working environment positively and negatively. Another result is a description of the prerequisites for managers to be able to communicate in a way that influences co-worker well-being and the working environment. The analysis of the communication behaviors and communication methodologies versus the health-related Quality Management values shows that several of the health-related Quality Management dimensions were present.

    Research limitations/implications – A limitation of this research is that it is just managers’ view that has been investigated and analyzed.

    Practical implications – Managers acting and behaving in accordance with the communicative behaviors and methodologies described in the results can influence co-worker health and the working environment in a positive way. The level of awareness of the prerequisites could help managers to influence co-worker well-being and create a good working environment.

    Originality/value – The connection between Communicative Leadership and health-related Quality Management values is rarely made. This research can contribute to greater understanding in both areas.

    In 2015, a project was initiated to explore how quality can be enhanced in Swedish businesses by developing an internal coaching process to support value-based leadership development. The three–year project, financed by The Knowledge Foundation, is a research and development partnership consisting of three Swedish manufacturing companies and Mid Sweden University. Results presented in the poster address both the process and outcomes from this project.

    Purpose

    To present the results in changes in a company's value-base two years into a project with the purpose to explore how quality can be enhanced when a value-based leadership is integrated with sustainable practices.

    Method:

    A number of activities were completed in the company. A survey was designed to measure SQD values as an indicator for value based leadership. The survey were administered both at the start of the project and then again one year later to measure changes in leadership and values. The results from the survey were first analyzed using SPSS (Cronbach Alpha and T-test) and then in relation to completed activities. This was done by the research team together with management team in the company.

    Results:

    The results will be the presentation of completed activities within the company as well as results from the two measurements shows that the mean of the measured values are higher in the second measurement when it comes to the whole factory. When it comes to the managers it is the opposite regarding how they look at their role when it comes to the values: Leadership commitment and Participation of everybody.

    Conclusions so far:

    • Measuring soft aspects helps to focus on culture and values.
    • The wording of the statements can affect culture.
    • Talking about leadership in connection to an organizations unique context initiates new dialog forms, topics, and gives the leaders a “leadership language”.
    • Focusing on positive aspects of leadership creates energy and a solution focused climate.
    • Statistically significant results can be shown after such a short period as one year.
    • Increased pride in the team and the work-place!
    • Further investigate correlations between factors.

    Abstract

    One of the most critical aspects for building quality and innovation in organizations is the role of values. Performance suffers when organizations fail to prioritize values. A challenge for many leaders is to understand deep-rooted values together with what they are and how they are developed. These deep-rooted values are reflected in the behaviors, language and signs occurring in the organization and can be seen as the organizations culture. When a culture is shaped, leadership is central and the managers in the organization are vital. Managers in an organization affect the predominating culture through their behaviors and approach to their co-workers. This make it interesting to try to find out underlying values held by managers striving for good leadership and performance. Underlying values can be unconscious and taken for granted, and thereby hard to ask about.  By using an interview guide inspired by Appreciative Inquiry (AI) (an approach based on generativity and positivity), underlying values and the leadership used by top managers can be discovered.

     

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the results from the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) inspired interviews to explore the underlying values held by top manager and to identify soft aspects of leadership.

     

    Methodology/approach – Top managers were interviewed as a part of a research project with the aim to support the development of value-based leadership that integrates company values, organizational culture, customer needs and sustainable development. A structured interview guide, inspired by AI, was developed and used to pinpoint their motivation and vision of a good organization in order to understand the values the leaders had and to identify soft aspects of leadership.  The interviews were analyzed in workshops with the whole research group and structured and visualized through affinity chart.

     

    Findings – The results show underlying values held by top managers and identified soft aspects of leadership.

     

    Practical implications – The presented interview guide can be used to identify the top managers underlying values and the presented results from the interviews can be used to inspire other leaders to develop their leadership in their striving of good leadership and effective organizations.

    For leaders to successfully meet the complexity of businesses today, many argue the need to design a performance measurement system that integrates hard data outcomes with soft measures found in organizational culture including values, norms, and behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to present an approach to collecting baseline data that captures the soft dimensions of organizational culture with system thinking as a guiding theory. The results present an approach for measuring the soft dimensions of organizational culture with description of methods, the type of data and what level of organizational culture they measure.

    There is great demand for workplace health-promotion programmes that improve co-worker health and provide a return on investment, which is due to the continuous escalation of care costs and the prioritisation of co-worker health by businesses. Early research found that organisations that have achieved good co-worker health with low sickness absence through their conscious and well-structured work were also working according to Quality Management. Health-promotion interventions are possible in every organisation, but before starting a health-promotion programme it is necessary to analyse the organisation and especially its culture. The purpose of this paper is to measure in what way health-promoting activities influence the Quality Management culture, particularly the health-related values ‘Leadership commitment’ and ‘Participation of everybody’. A comparison between the Quality Management culture before starting a health-promotion project and the results a year later is presented. The results show that health-promotion activities do not affect the Quality Management culture, at least not from a year perspective. On the other hand, the results show that health-promotion activities can affect co-workers’ perception of their health.

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe a collaboration between academia and practitioners where the aim was reach agreement on the Quality Culture content.

    Methodology/approach – A project with the aim to measure and develop Quality Culture started in 2015. The overall aim of the project was to create new knowledge and insights about 1) what quality culture is, 2) what quality culture consists of, 3) how quality culture can be measured and 4) how it can be developed. In this paper the work to meet the first and second aim and the results of that work are presented.

    Findings – A framework for quality culture consisting of supportive and obstructive behaviours developed in collaboration between academia and practitioners. The paper includes a description of how practitioners and researchers can work together to develop a shared set of values.

    It is desirable to test sportswear and sports equipment at exactly the same conditions experienced during use. Although outdoor tests are in many cases the most adequate, they are at the same time quite complex, demand special measurement technology and wearable equipment. Results of such tests are often hard to interpret due to large variations because of rapidly varying ambient conditions and individual specifics of human objects, among other factors, which are hard or impossible to control. One common alternative is provided through indoor tests made in a stable, controlled environment. Controlling such parameters as temperature, wind speed and direction, air humidity with indoor facilities intended to replicate ambient conditions, and designed to house large objects, is a complex undertaking. Furthermore, replicating seasonal conditions complicates matters even more. A significant amount of research and development related to the operation of sports and other related equipment at high speeds and windy conditions has been carried out in wind tunnels with different degrees of climatic realism. However, the majority of such facilities are designed and constructed for the automotive industry, the aerospace industry and for marine research. A new wind tunnel facility, opened in March 2015 at the Sports Tech Research Centre at Mid Sweden University, is currently among the very few facilities in the world designed under the direct control of sports technology specialists and dedicated primarily to research and development within sports, outdoor clothing and footwear as well as equipment development and testing. The main goal when constructing this dedicated facility has been to successfully replicate ambient conditions for training and equipment testing in environments with controlled wind speed, temperature (+4 to +35°C) and precipitation (from fine mist to heavy downfall). The wind tunnel facility houses the largest moving belt in Sweden (5 m long and 2.7 m wide) which can be adjusted for leveled, uphill and downhill motion. The moving belt is placed in a 10 m2 test section in which the wind speed can be adjusted to match belt speed or independently up to 55 km/h (without narrowing the test section). A fog and rain system, mounted in the test section, can generate rainy conditions varying from fine mist to heavy monsoon. It is also possible to open the facility in order to allow experiments to be performed in wide range of outdoor, ambient conditions. This paper presents the basic parameters of the new wind tunnel facility. As this facility is open for wider international cooperation, we also report the general directions of current research and the future work planned to be carried out at this facility.

    Abstract [en]

    In present paper we would like to share some experiences of building new education in Sports Technology at MidSweden University and the results of 10 years of successfully running it in Östersund. The Sports Technologyeducation at Mid Sweden University started at Campus Östersund in 2003 as a part of the curriculum of theEngineering Department. This specialization was initially at the three-year Bachelor level, and later it was extendedto an additional two-year Master level. Aiming at the quality of Sports Technology education, three keystones areunderlying its process, representing the solid knowledge base, capacity to be flexible in problem solving and the usean innovative approaches. The Department unites researches with a background in both natural sciences andengineering disciplines, having a wide experience of working with and within the industry, equally active in researchand teaching. The unique constellation of the profiles forming the Department include not only the SportsTech®group, being “the backbone”, but also the Ecology and Eco-technology, and Quality Technology groups bringing theexcellence and extra competence needed to assure the quality of the Sports Technology education. We were the firsthigher education institution in Sweden to give this kind of education program and now some other SwedishUniversities have followed us. Our success can be measured by a number of graduates taking good jobs in theindustry. We also enjoy a steady flow of new students coming from all parts of Sweden, and Sports Technologyeducation stays among the most desirable ones in the country.

    Cross-country skiing, biathlon and ski orienteering are competitive sports with practitioners who are mostly from countries in the northern hemisphere. The competition season is during the time when the ground is covered with snow, which roughly extends from mid-November to late March. During the rest time of the year, which is a long preparatory period of training for the skiers before the competition season, the skiers use roller skis for dryland training with the aim of imitating skiing on snow. Furthermore, over the last few decades, fairly specific indoor testing methods for cross-country skiers have become possible due to the development of treadmills that allow roller skiing using classical and freestyle techniques.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    The purpose of the study is to explore if and how text mining methodology can be applied to investigate and analyze large amounts of academic papers. Methodology / Approach The study uses probabilistic topic modeling as method to perform exploratory data analysis on QMOD-ICQSS proceedings.

    Findings

    The findings give reason for further exploration of text mining and probabilistic topic modeling as a relevant method to extract information from large amounts of academic papers. The generated topic models serve as a foundation for other researchers to conduct more detailed analysis of the QMOD-ICQSS proceedings depending on the specific area of interest. Research Limitations The study was limited to the use of one software and modeling technique, a multi-track approach would have strengthened the results.

    Originality

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore and describe research presented in the International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management (IJQRM), thereby creating an increased understanding of how the areas of research have evolved through the years. An additional purpose is to show how text mining methodology can be used as a tool for exploration and description of research publications.

    Design/methodology/approach - The study applies text mining methodologies to explore and describe the digital library of IJQRM from 1984 up to 2014. To structure and condense the data, k-means clustering and probabilistic topic modeling with latent Dirichlet allocation is applied. The data set consists of research paper abstracts.

    Findings - The results support the suggestion of the occurrence of trends, fads and fashion in research publications. Research on quality function deployment (QFD) and reliability management are noted to be on the downturn whereas research on Six Sigma with a focus on lean, innovation, performance and improvement on the rise. Furthermore, the study confirms IJQRM as a scientific journal with quality and reliability management as primary areas of coverage, accompanied by specific topics such as total quality management, service quality, process management, ISO, QFD and Six Sigma. The study also gives an insight into how text mining can be used as a way to efficiently explore and describe large quantities of research paper abstracts.

    Research limitations/implications - The study focuses on abstracts of research papers, thus topics and categories that could be identified via other journal publications, such as book reviews; general reviews; secondary articles; editorials; guest editorials; awards for excellence (notifications); introductions or summaries from conferences; notes from the publisher; and articles without an abstract, are excluded.

    Originality/value - There do not seem to be any prior text mining studies that apply cluster modeling and probabilistic topic modeling to research article abstracts in the IJQRM. This study therefore offers a unique perspective on the journal's content.

    At frequent intervals, new reports and papers are published stressing the importance of high quality and quality improvement measures in the public and private sector if Sweden is to survive as a welfare state and industrial nation. The situation seems not to be unique for Sweden: similar opinions can be heard in other parts of the world as well. In the 21st century, consumers and citizens should be provided with continuously improved quality at a lower cost, otherwise businesses are likely to go bankrupt and politicians may lose the trust of the people. Quality is, thus, a word that is used persistently by people in power and the social commentators of today. From this perspective, it might seem fitting that quality, quality management (QM), total quality management (TQM) and other closely related terminologies are well defined, to make possible constructive dialogue that will culminate in effective action. This is often not the case, which is why vision statements, campaigns and other quality improvement measures risk falling short before they are even launched. With this background, the purpose of this thesis is to facilitate fruitful dialogue by examining QM-research and how trends, terminologies and research focus have shifted over time. By increasing the understanding of how QM-research has evolved it is also possible to create a coherent overview which hopefully can help to reduce confusion and polarisation amongst scholars and practitioners. In this way, it might be possible to increase the number of successful quality improvement measures as well as to lay the foundations for sustainable and system-wide quality improvement actions in society at large.

    The thesis is based on three studies, of which the first is looking into conference proceedings from one of the globally most prominent scientific conferences on quality – the QMOD-ICQSS conference. The two subsequent studies use abstracts from three of the top ranked scientific journals dealing with quality - International Journal of Quality and Reliability Management, Total Quality Management Journal and Total Quality Management & Business Excellence. All studies have been conducted according to text mining methodology, which entails usage of statistical tools in the form of hard- and software for data collection, modelling and analysis. The approach is exploratory and previously not verified with this purpose, which is why the three studies offer unique perspectives on the research field, at the same time as new methodological tools and approaches are investigated and tested.

    Through the studies it is possible to show occurrence of trends in research alignment as well as in publication design and popularity. The studies also identify central, perpetual, topics around which the research has been concentrated. These topics indicate that the research field, in spite of momentary trends and fashions, rests on a firm foundation regarding problem definition and approaches to solve them. Finally, a model is presented which summarizes the perspectives and outsets which distinguish QM and make it a research field in its own right.

    In this work, the use of electrophoretic deposition to modify the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy fabricated via additive manufacturing technology is reported. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)-stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) had a spherical shape with a diameter of the metallic core of 100±20 nm and ζ -potential -15 mV. The AgNPs- coated Ti6Al4V alloy was studied in respect with its chemical composition and surface morphology, water contact angle, hysteresis, and surface free energy. The results of SEM microphotography analysis showed that the AgNPs were homogeneously distributed over the surface. Hysteresis and water contact angle measurements revealed the effect of the deposited AgNPs layer, namely an increased water contact angle and decreased contact angle hysteresis. However, the average water contact angle was 125° for PVP-stabilized-AgNPs-coated surface, whereas ethylene glycol gave the average contact angle of 17°. A higher surface energy is observed for AgNPs-coated Ti6Al4V surface (70.17 mN/m) compared with the uncoated surface (49.07 mN/m).

    Abstract [en]

    Present paper reports on the results of surface modification of the additively manufactured porous Ti6Al4V scaffolds. Radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering was used to modify the surface of the alloy via deposition of the biocompatible hydroxyapatite (HA) coating. The surface morphology, chemical and phase composition of the HA-coated alloy were studied. It was revealed that RF magnetron sputtering allows preparing a homogeneous HA coating onto the entire surface of scaffolds.

    Abstract [en]

    Custom orthopedic and dental implants may be fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM), for example using electron beam melting technology. This study is focused on the modification of the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy coin-like scaffolds fabricated via AM technology (EBM®) by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputter deposition of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating. The scaffolds with HA coating were characterized by Scanning Electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction. HA coating showed a nanocrystalline structure with the crystallites of an average size of 32±9 nm. The ability of the surface to support adhesion and the proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells was studied using biological short-term tests in vitro. In according to in vitro assessment, thin HA coating stimulated the attachment and proliferation of cells. Human mesenchymal stem cells cultured on the HA-coated scaffold also formed mineralized nodules.

    Today’s organizations face the challenge of measuring the right things and then using those measurements as a starting point to work with improved quality.  It is important to design a measurement tool that corresponds to the initiatives taken when a new management implementation such as adopting quality values is carried out. The failure to generate a shared value base is pointed out as one main cause for the inability to effectively apply Quality Management and Lean within organizations, thus it appears central to measure these values. However, the measuring of values and organizational culture, e.g. the soft side, seems to be missing within both concepts. The managers have great influence on what culture will be predominant in an organization, and how they act and behave affects the attitudes and behaviours of the co-workers within the organization. Therefore, there is a need for a tool that measures not only quality values, but also behaviours that support or obstruct a quality culture. Furthermore, it is of interest how the employees rank both the performance and the importance of quality values and behaviours. The tool should not be a ‘certification’ but rather a diagnostic tool for continuous improvement.
