Ambivalence and Living Apart Together in Later Life: A Critical Research Proposal2017Inngår i: Journal of Marriage and Family, ISSN 0022-2445, E-ISSN 1741-3737, Vol. 79, nr 5, s. 1404-1418Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Most unattached older persons who would like an intimate partnership do not want to remarry or be in a marriage-like relationship. A growing trend is to live apart together (LAT) in an ongoing intimate relationship that does not include a common home. We address the debate about whether LAT constitutes a new form of intimate relationship in a critical assessment of research on LAT relationships that applies ambivalence and concepts from the life course perspective. We conclude that among older but not younger adults, LAT relationships are generally a stable alternative to living with a partner, negotiated in the context of current social institutions and arrangements. We propose research questions that address later life living apart together as an innovative alternative intimate relationship. We encourage comparative work on the unique challenges of later life living apart together, their implications for other family ties, and their connection to social and cultural arrangements.

    Reflections on a Cross-National Qualitative Study of Within-Household Finances2013Inngår i: Journal of Marriage and Family, ISSN 0022-2445, E-ISSN 1741-3737, Vol. 75, nr 3, s. 640-650Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This report presents some reflections on and experiences from a cross-national qualitative research project about within-household finances conducted by sociologists from Germany, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. The authors focus first on the challenges of making qualitative cross-national comparisons and argue for the importance of establishing a common understanding of methodological and theoretical aspects. They then go on to consider the relevance of political – cultural context for understanding within-household distribution of resources. They suggest that meanings of money are influenced by understandings of gender, which in turn influence and are influenced by welfare regimes. They then present a few outcomes from a cross-national analysis of results from Spain, Sweden, and the United States. They conclude the article by suggesting that comparisons on the level of results rather than on the level of primary data is a viable option for qualitative cross-national analysis.
