Det sociala nätverkets kapaciteter.: Om forskning kring informellt ekonomiskt och materielt stöd2005In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, no 2, p. 47-65Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Although social network and social support analysis has been used extensively in the social sciences over the last twenty years, little attention has been paid to the implications of social support from family, spouses and friends in the research field of poverty. This article presents a research overview of economical and material exchange as components of social support and highlights it’s meaning for groups and individuals with temporary or regular needs of provisional support. Results from more than 80 international published articles are examined with particular focus on the pattern and impact of gender, responsibility, legitimacy, autonomy and dependency. The importance of changes in family structures and political expectations on informal social support is discussed, along with the effects of different welfare systems. Finally, the article propose vital research questions about the importance, character and social implications of informal economic support in Sweden, in the realm of a specific welfare state regime with institutionalised and in-bedded norms of redistribution and reciprocity.

The compromised researcher: Issues in feminist research methodologies2012In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 49, no 4, p. 333-347Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article centres on issues of vulnerability and being compromised in feminist research where the focus has frequently been on researching the same. Compromise, here used in its pejorative sense, may for instance occur in terms of one's research topic, the methods one utilizes, or the participants chosen for a study. Drawing on a range of examples including the methodological work of Ann Oakley (1981, 2000) as well as three articles on researching men that appeared in the journal Signs in 2005, I argue that feminist researchers, possibly because they work in an identity-based discipline, may be diversely vulnerable when researching the same and/or researching the different, and can be compromised both by how they are treated by those whom they encounter in their research and by their own behaviour in that context. I suggest that these concerns are under-articulated in feminist research and conclude with a series of questions that need to be raised. © Författaren och Sveriges Sociologförbund.

Emergence in the sociology of Mead: Process, interaction and the conditions of social life2016In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 53, no 3, p. 227-245Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Within sociology, and especially in the symbolic interaction genre thereof, emergence have been used in order to analyze the process between different dichotomies such as structure and agency, individual and collective, improvisation and the pre-determined as well as the relationship between a now, a past and a present. The aim of this article is to, based on mentioned dichotomies, discuss the possibilities and the limitations of emergence. In terms of possibilities emergence can be used as an analytical and theoretical tool for analyzing the process between different social phenomena. In terms of limitations, emergence could (and have been) criticized for not acknowledging the pre-conditioned aspects of social life. Hence, this article is concluded in a discussion on how to integrate pre-conditioned aspects of social life, such as power, dominance and subordination in the analysis of the emergent and dynamic social life.

Att iscensätta apokalypsen: Zombiemetaforer i den samtida katastrofberedskapen2015In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 52, no 2, p. 155-179Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the turn of the millennium, enactment of possible emergencies and catastrophes has become

a most common way of producing knowledge about events yet to occur. Preparedness exercises

are frequently performed by public authorities at local and regional levels. Collaborative

approaches among relevant actors are enhanced and evaluated through simulated accidents and

acts of terror as well as school shootings and epidemic outbreaks. Due to the incalculability of

many modern threats, enactment is employed as a method for rendering potential future events

available as empirical phenomena. However, sometimes these potential futures are represented

in ways that correspond only to imagined and fictional worlds. The aim of this article is to explore

the enactment of unreal possibilities in contemporary preparedness exercises. The empirical

material employed for this purpose consists of crisis plans and exercise guides used in public

and official institutions in the United States as well as qualitative interviews with municipal

    safety coordinators in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Young People Talking about Risk in Traffic Milieus: The Relationship between Sensemaking of Risk and Place Attachment This explorative study investigates the relationship between sensemaking of risk and place attachment among young people. Traffic safety behaviours are focused. Eight focus group interviews have been done, with a total number of 36 interviewees in the age of 16-20 years. Half of the groups where made in Greater Stockholm, and half in the county of Jamtland. Four aspects of place attachment where explored. The results show that particularly social belonging is of a great matter within young people's sensemaking of risk in this context. The study implies the importance of further studies of sensemaking of risk in general, and of young people's sensemaking of risk in traffic milieus in particular.

    Abstract [en]

This quick response study was carried out with the aim to study how individuals made sense of the outbreak of the parasite Cryptosporidium in the drinking water in Ostersund. In total 24 interviews were made with people in Ostersund. The result shows that the interviewees related to social as well as spatial dimensions when they made sense of this risky situation, which can be understood in relation to the concept of sensemaking of risk. Six groups among the interviewees emerged in the analysis, illustrating how different aspects of the risk where focused in the process of sensemaking. Further, the study shows that the process of sensemaking was built upon direct as well as indirect social relations, where the interviewees made sense of the risk by relating to people who were close to them as well as to people to whom they had no personal relation. These indirect social relations were defined as: elderly, children and people in other countries, which also points at the fact that the interviewees made sense of the risk in a global context. Finally, the results suggest that social relations could be further explored in future studies in sensemaking of risk.
