    Abstract [en]

    Using ethnographic method combined with analysis of primary sources like mass media appearances, song lyrics and websites, the article ex-amines ritualized self-injury in the Black Metal milieu. It is shown that this type of ascetic mortification is no aberration in the history of religions, but diverges from older forms of Satanism. Self-injury functions in Black Metal Satanism as a symbol of transgression and virile bravado, and as a means to display allegiance to the Satanic cause by permanently marking the body. It is typically described by practitioners as a blood sacrifice to Satan. This ritualization of self-injury, where it is explicitly framed as a practice completely different from anything occurring in a secular context, is part of a broader endeavor in the milieu, which seeks to re-enchant a late modernity perceived to be devoid of spiritual values. Increasing mass media attention to self-injury, there postulated as a (secular) mental health problem among adolescent girls, has therefore lessened its usefulness as a sacralized and masculine transgressive symbol. This, it is argued, explains the declining emphasis on it in the Satanic milieu in recent years.

    Abstract [en]

    The article discusses how feminists, in particular in the period circa 1880–1930, have employed Satanism (i.e., a positive portrayal of the Devil) as a strategy in their endeavors. The central theme in this context is the construction of a counter-myth to the hegemonic Christian myth of Eve’s interaction with the Serpent/Satan in the Garden of Eden. This narrative has traditionally been used by conservative Christians to legitimate the subjugation of women. By making Eve and the Serpent heroic rebels against an oppressive patriarchal God, the social implications of the original myth are attacked. An important background for much of this insurrectionist rhetoric was the esoteric and pro-Satanic counter-myth constructed by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, chief ideologist of the influential Theosophical Society. Equally crucial was the fact that Satanism, as the article demonstrates, was well-established as a language of resistance, and had been employed by dissidents like Shelley and various socialists to provoke the bourgeoisie and display a complete rejection of hegemonic discourses. Concluding the article is a discussion of the paradoxes inherent when a counter-discourse is created, such as the reification and perpetuation of existent mythologies.

    The article discusses the innovative form of Satanism that arose in theNordic Black Metal milieu around 1989–1990. Its focus on theistic wor-ship of Satan, and evil as the highest value, set it apart from most otherknown forms of Satanism. Drawing on fanzines, records and interviews,it is demonstrated that this counter-discourse positioned itself in oppo-sition to LaVeyan Satanism – which was perceived as too humanitarian,positive and soft – to a greater extent than it focused on anti-Christianpolemics. The possible influence of role-playing games is also scruti-nized, and it is found that there are certain connections between BlackMetal Satanism and this phenomenon. Finally, the paradoxes inherentin a counter-discursive project like the celebration of evil are highlighted.

    The article discusses the view, held by many nineteenth-century authors, of Leonardo da Vinci as an esotericist, and his La Gioconda as mysterious, sinister and filled with hidden signs. This “esoterization” of the painting and its creator was part of a broader tendency to view artists, both historical and contemporary, as magicians and mystics in some sense. Hereby, art became integrated into the endeavors of various esoteric groups and thinkers, and an originally secular Renaissance work was absorbed into a nineteenth-century “occulture” or “cultic milieu.”

    According to the Bible, Eve was the first to heed Satan’s advice to eat of the forbidden fruit. The notion of woman as the Devil’s accomplice is prominent throughout the history of Christianity and has been used to legitimate the subordination of wives and daughters. During the nineteenth century, rebellious females performed counter-readings of this misogynist tradition. Hereby, Lucifer was reconceptualized as a feminist liberator of womankind, and Eve became a heroine. In these reimaginings, Satan is an ally in the struggle against a patriarchy supported by God the Father and his male priests. The book delineates how such Satanic feminism is expressed in a number of nineteenth-century esoteric works, literary texts, autobiographies, pamphlets and journals, newspaper articles, paintings, sculptures, and even artefacts of consumer culture such as jewellery. The analysis focuses on interfaces between esotericism, literature, art, and the political realm. New light is thus shed on neglected aspects of the intellectual history of feminism, Satanism, and revisionary mythmaking. The scope of the study makes it valuable not only for historians of religion but also for those with a general interest in cultural history (or specific aspects of it like gender history, romanticism, or decadent-symbolist art and literature).

    De senaste decenniernas forskning om antisemitism i Sverige har i hög grad varit inriktad på utvecklingen under 1900-talet, inte minst problem kopplade till andra världskriget och förhållandet till Nazityskland. Åtskilliga värdefulla resultat har presenterats men flera kapitel återstår att skriva av den svenska antisemitismens historia. Inte minst förtjänar utvecklingen under 1800-talets senare en djupare genomlysning.

    På 1870-tet bidrog den ekonomiska krisen i Väst- och Centraleuropa till att liberalismen förlorade prestige och ersattes av en totalitär och exkluderande nationalism som legitimerande statsideologi. I fråga om judarna ställde en växande antisemitisk rörelse krav på uppbrott från den tidigare emancipations- och integrationslinjen. Frågan var inte längre hur judar skulle bli en del av nationen utan om det överhuvudtaget var möjligt.

    Under detta skede omformades traditionellt kristna antijudiska teman till rasistiskt färgad antisemitism om judisk världsmakt. Katolska medier såväl som protestantiska demagoger var många gånger drivande i den antisemitiska rörelsen, samtidigt som delar av kyrkan såg med oro på utvecklingen och snarare höll fast vid en linje där omvändelse och dop sågs som lösningen av den ”judiska frågan”.

    Mot bakgrund av den tecknade historiska kontexten kommer mitt paper diskutera brytningen mellan kristen antijudaism och modern antisemitism i ett svenskt perspektiv. Jag tar avstamp i en analys av två längre artiklar publicerade på 1880-talet i en lågkyrklig missionstridskrift, Missionstidskrift för Israel. I texterna blandas traditionella teman med samtidens konspiratoriska föreställningar om judisk kontroll över banksystemet, börsen och pressen. Ett framtidsscenario målas, dels om ett judiskt skräckvälde som håller på att upprättas, dels om hela Israels omvändelse och en ny världsordning där en fullkomnad mänsklighet framträder.

    Tales about treacherous Jesuits and scheming popes are an important and pervasive part of European culture. They belong to a set of ideas, images, and practices that, when grouped under the label anti-Catholicism, represent a phenomenon that can be traced back to the Reformation. Anti-Catholic movements and sentiments crossed boundaries between European countries, contributing to the early modern consolidation of national identities. In the nineteenth century, secularist movements adopted and transformed confessional criticism in a new internationalist dimension that was articulated across the whole Western world. A variety of liberal, conservative, secular, Protestant, and other forces gave shape to this counter-image, taking on the function of a pattern from which one’s own ideals and beliefs could be chiselled out. The contributions to this volume show how different national contexts affected the proliferation of anti-Catholic messages over the course of four centuries of European history, and demonstrate that anti-Catholicism constituted a powerful European cross-cultural phenomenon.

    In earlier scholarship a simplified connection between Gnostic mythology and ethics was presupposed. One assumed that the Gnostic myth would result in libertinism or ascetism. The last decades this simplified view successfully has been challenged, but at the same time the connection between myth and ethics has been blurred or totally obliterated. In this article the scholarly debate is summarized and criticized and a new proposal for the connection between the myth of the Gospel of Truth and the ethics that is advocated for in the text is put forward.

    In this article a new attempt to interpret and translate some Coptic terms on page 19 of the Gospel of Truth from Nag Hammadi Codex 1 is put forward. Thereby the author takes the first step on the way to describe the initiation of the Gnostic Christian from what God is not onto a deeper knowledge about what the Godhead instead represents.

    This article takes as its point of departure the question of how Wilhelm Halbfass, Daya Krishna, and Jitendranath Mohanty have conceptualized tradition in relation to “Indian” philosophy. They have all reacted to, and criticized, homogeneous and static conceptions of Indian philosophies, and by articulating different ways of apprehending tradition they have tried to come to terms with such limiting images. My reading of their texts has been informed by a questioning of how they, in turn, conceptualize tradition. Most of all this is related to the tendency, on the one hand, to stress that tradition is open-ended and dynamic but at the same time to speak of tradition as one singular and universalizable phenomenon, sometimes even as a reified phenomenon (“it”). This discussion is connected to a concern of mine regarding how to conceptualize a plurality and heterogeneity while avoiding a reifying, generalizing language. Toward the end I present a reading of the Nyāyasūtra and how the concept of siddhānta could be understood in the light of three of its commentaries. This reading is here framed as the practical and philosophical outcome of the reflections made in the analysis of Halbfass, Krishna, and Mohanty.

    Although seldom mentioned in the secondary literature on Vaiśeṣika, the cognitive category of ārṣajñāna (ṛṣi cognition) is accepted as a distinct category of vidyā (knowledge) within both early and later Vaiśeṣika texts. This article deals with how ārṣajñāna is conceptualized in Praśastapādabhāṣya (PBh), Śrīdhara’s Nyāyakandalī (NK), and Vyomaśiva’s Vyomavatī (Vy). The main focus lies on how ṛṣi cognition is treated in these texts and what terms are used in the process. I aim to clarify the analysis of ṛṣi cognition apparent in the above sources and outline the implications this might have for the somewhat grander objective of a mapping of the semantic landscape of cognition and knowledge in Vaiśeṣika texts. The categories of yogic perception (yogipratyakṣa) and siddhic vision (siddhadarśana) are also treated since they are included within a shared discourse.

    Philosophy and the End of Sacrifice: Disengaging Ritual in Ancient India, Greece and Beyond2015Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    This volume addresses the means and ends of sacrificial speculation by inviting a selected group of specialist in the fields of philosophy, history of religions, and indology to examine philosophical modes of sacrificial speculation — especially in Ancient India and Greece — and consider the commonalities of their historical raison d’être. Scholars have long observed, yet without presenting any transcultural grand theory on the matter, that sacrifice seems to end with (or even continue as) philosophy in both Ancient India and Greece. How are we to understand this important transformation that so profoundly changed the way we think of religion (and philosophy as opposed to religion) today? Some of the complex topics inviting closer examination in this regard are the interiorisation of ritual, ascetism and self-sacrifice, sacrifice and cosmogony, the figure of the philosopher-sage, transformations and technologies of the self, analogical reasoning, the philosophy of ritual, vegetarianism, and metempsychosis.
