A Design Research Lab—An Integrated Model to Identify Conscious and Unconscious Behavior in the Design Process2016In: Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing: Design for Inclusion, Springer International Publishing Switzerland , 2016, Vol. 500, 553-563 p.Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

To understand how different design solutions affect users, designers traditionally use different evaluation methods that mainly rely on conscious feedback from the users. However, the complexity of human behaviour, where a large part is unconscious, point to a need for an extended tool box addressing the part not accessible to human conscious knowledge. Here, we describe a design research lab where traditional methods are complemented with tools to measure physiological signals influenced by emotional and sympathetic responses. These tools include galvanic skin response (GSR), electrocardiograph (ECG), and electroencephalograph (EEG). Typical sessions with acquired data of conscious and unconscious user reactions are described. The large body of data collected, which also require non-design expertise for interpretation, suggest that a further development towards simplified output data of the unconscious reactions is needed to allow wider use within industrial design work.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate if Swedish agencies preserve their websites according to the Swedish archival legislations and guidelines. As a theory the OAIS Reference Model (Open Archival Information System, developed by US Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems, CCSDS) has been used as a model to show how important it is to develop strategies for public digital information which has to be preserved for long term. The ingest function in the OAIS Reference Model demands that files are prepared for long term preservation and requires that the digital information fulfils established technical requirements.

In the study the Swedish National Archive and their advices about preserving websites to archivists on the Swedish agencies are being studied. To control if the agencies meet the requirements for their management and preservation of their websites a survey was sent out to investigate if Swedish agencies preserve their websites.

According to the survey result, 84 of 113 agencies preserve their websites in some way. If the technical requirements really was met could not be verified in this thesis, the results was relied on the responses from the authorities. The study showed that agencies requested clearer rules in the field of preservation of websites, but also that some agencies wasn’t aware of the regulations and the significance in this issue.

The conclusion of the study is that the agencies might need to update themselves on important legislation and guidance in this area. The study also shows that the National Archive must be clearer with their information on long term storage of government agencies websites.

Musikutbildningen och examination vid Kungl. Musikaliska Akademien under "Pehr Frigel-epoken", 1796-18421994Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this lecentiate disseratation music education and examination at the Royal Academy of Music (KMA) during the period 1796-1842, hear called the Frigel era, is described. The theory of culture provides a general perspective for the disign of the dissertation and the illustration of the issues. A model of analysis, which is a method of investigation rather than a finished model, forms a point ot departure in my attempt to demonstrate that education and examination had a double effect in society. It meant a cultural pluralism rather than a secularization.

Education during the Frigel era starts with an Elementary Singing School, but after 1815 its professional aim becomes gradually more obvious. Subjects during the period in question are the theory of music, singing, piano and organ. The examination for a post at school, at sixth form college or senior high school and in church is extensive. During a twenty-year period 80 music teachers, 90 precentors and 600 organists are examined.

Important issues discussed in this essay concern education content, education quality and examination demands related to school and church activities and also to the improtance of education in the development of society.

    Abstract [en]

The war poetry of Erik Axel Karlfeldt (1864-1931) is a neglected part of the poet's work. The aim of this article is to discuss three poems from Flora och Bellona (1918): "Det röda korset" ("The Red Cross"), "Svart Jul" ("Black Christmas") and "En pesthymn" ("A Hymn of Pestilence"). Attention is paid to the ideological level of the poems, but also to their poetic structure. The poems are related to Peter Hallberg's discussion of Karlfeldt's archaistic imagery, to Esaias Tegnér's "Svea", but also to the contemporary political poetry of outspoken nationalists and socialists. Compared to the explicit political poetry, Karlfeldt's poetry is complex, often ambivalent in its criticism of both belligerents and alternately displaying despair and optimism. "En pesthymn" can be seen as a turning point, mirroring the outbreak in 1918 of the Finnish Civil War. In this poem, the ambivalent moral judgements of the poet's preceding war poetry are replaced by unequivocal political support for the "Whites".

    Abstract [sv]

At the end of the day… An ELF perspective on lexical chunks in spoken business English.2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Since Sinclair (1991) identified “the idiom principle”, lexical chunks, i.e. frequently occurring clusters of words, have been recognized as an important part of language learning. This importance has been highlighted as advances in computer software have made it easier to identify patterns in language use, and most published English teaching materials are now informed by the analysis of large corpora of native speaker language. However, given that the most widespread use of English language throughout the world takes the form of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), i.e. English used as a common means of communication among speakers from different first-language backgrounds, there is a strong argument for examining the lexical chunks used in this context when considering students’ needs.

This study uses VOICE (the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English), a corpus of spoken ELF interactions, to examine the occurrence of language chunks in ELF in the professional domain. A subcorpus of VOICE comprising of occurring in the professional domain (business, organizational and research contexts) was created, representing approximately 830,000 tokens of transcribed oral text. Recurring lexical chunks were identified using Wordsmith Tools (Scott 2012), and categorized according to type and function. The types of lexical chunk occurring most frequently proved to be vague expressions, e.g. “and so on” and discourse markers such as “at the end of the day”. The pedagogical implications of these findings are considered, concerning whether and how published materials might be supplemented to better meet the needs of those students who expect to use English in an ELF context.

Lexical Bundles in ELF Business Meetings2016In: The Linguistics Journal, ISSN 1718-2301, Vol. 10, no 1, 141-163 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is widely accepted that lexical bundles can provide useful insights into the characteristics of different types of discourse. However, studies have tended to focus on native speaker or language learner use, and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), English used as a common means of communication among speakers from different first-language backgrounds, has received limited attention in this respect. Given that ELF is widely used in a business context, the research reported in this paper is an initial attempt to characterize ELF used in one business community of practice by identifying the frequency and function of lexical bundles in a small corpus of ELF business meetings. It draws on a subcorpus of business meeting transcripts from the Vienna-Oxford Corpus of English (VOICE) to identify the most frequent two-, three- and four-word bundles used, and compares these to lexical bundles used in ELF in other domains and in ENL business meetings (Handford, 2010). Results showed similar levels of use of frequent bundles in ELF business meetings to the comparative data, and a high degree of overlap. Many of the bundles used in ELF business meetings were the same as those used in general contexts, suggesting that there are there are stable core features in spoken ELF, although key bundles indicated certain differences. Furthermore, a number of the ELF business bundles corresponded to frequent ENL bundles. Many of the bundles used in ELF business meetings were associated with developing relationships, such as providing verbal feedback (yeah yeah yeah, mhm mhm mhm) hedging (I don’t know, I think that), and making interpersonal references (you know, you can see), and vague expressions (more or less, and so on) were also common. Idiomatic expressions tended to be avoided, with the exception of at the end of (the day) which had a high frequency in ELF, as in ENL business meetings.

Lexical bundles in graded readers: To what extent does language restriction affect lexical patterning?2016In: System An International Journal of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics, ISSN 0346-251X, Vol. 59, 61-72 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how far the lexical bundles that occur in graded readers are influenced by simplified language, comparing them quantitatively and qualitatively with those occurring in a corpus of authentic prose fiction. Phrasal language found in the graded readers is also evaluated using Martinez and Schmitt’s (2012) PHRASE list. The results are largely encouraging, showing that lexical bundles occur with greater density in graded readers than authentic fiction, that they largely reflect authentic language use, and that most of the phrases deemed to be important and useful are represented. However, differences between B1 and B2 level readers indicate that a higher degree of simplification affects both the range and grammatical type of lexical bundles. Non-transparent lexical bundles, despite being composed of very frequent words, were under-represented in the readers, particularly at B1 level. It is concluded that while graded readers are a valuable source of exposure to lexical bundles, the under-representation of frequently-used opaque phrases points to the need for a more systematic approach to their inclusion.

Visible men and elusive women2011In: International Journal of Historical Archaeology, ISSN 1092-7697, E-ISSN 1573-7748, Vol. 15, no 1, 10-29 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Early gender archaeology formulated two statements: men are visible, women are invisible, and men work in hard materials, women work in soft materials. We discuss these dichotomies in connection with nineteenth-century folklore and an excavated eighteenth-century cottage at a summer-farm. We conclude that much of the gendered order-of-work tasks broke down in pragmatic day-to-day life, especially by women crossing the gender border. However, social chaos was held at bay by ritual acts and magic objects.

Traditionell fönsterrenovering: Värdet av att våga använda traditionella metoder och material2017Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
