The reflectance of steels and non-ferrous alloys: 2nd Pacific International Conference on Application of Lasers and Optics 20062006Inngår i: PICALO 2006 - 2nd Pacific International Conference on Applications of Laser and Optics - Conference Proceedings, 2006, s. 140-145Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The measurement of reflectance is important for the analysis and modelling of laser-material interactions. Unfortunately, most of the reflectance data presently available consider only polished pure metals rather than the commercially available (unpolished, oxidised) alloys which are actually being processed. This paper presents the results of reflectance measurements carried out on as-received engineering grade metals including: hot and cold rolled mild steel, zinc coated mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium alloys, copper and brass. The measurements were made using an integrating sphere with an Nd:YLF laser at two wavelengths (1053 nm and 527 nm). The results obtained differ considerably from existing data for polished, pure metals and should help to improve the accuracy of laser-material interaction models.

Quality Management for Sustainable Health: Methodologies, Values and Practices taken from Swedish Organizations2006Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In many Western countries today, not least in Sweden, there are a lot of organizations that have great problems with sickness absence. The costs connected to the high rates of sickness absence have also risen to alarming levels. Healthy co-workers and healthy organizations are obvious goals for many leaders, but this is not always so easy to establish. Work practices and leadership that are beneficial to co-worker health are thus vital to identify.

Studies have shown relationships between company-wide implementation of quality programs and improved co-worker satisfaction along with low co-worker turn over; in other words, co-worker health along with improved customer satisfaction and financial results. Despite the great problems concerning sickness absence, there are organizations that have been awarded prizes for excellence in leadership, internal partnership, working environment, and profitability.

The overall purposes of the research described in this thesis are to examine and describe how management and leadership can establish sustainable health among the co-workers and examine how the leadership for sustainable health is related to Quality Management. The in-depth purpose is to examine which aspects within the values derived from the quality movement are those that primarily influence the co-workers’ perceived health.

The results presented can be described in three parts and are results from four case studies carried out in five different organizations. Three of the organizations have received awards for establishing good working environment, good financial results, and low sick leaves among their co-workers; the fourth received an award for the successful implementation of quality programs.

The first part consists of results from case studies in three different organizations and describes how organizations can work to achieve sustainable health among their co-workers, with practical examples. The results are methodologies, values and organizational structure, which it is  considered possible for other organizations to adopt in their efforts to achieve good working conditions resulting in fewer sick leaves.

The second part is an attempt to investigate if leadership for sustainable health is related to Quality Management. Methodologies, leadership values, organizational structure, and general values found in organizations which have achieved sustainable health are analyzed in the light of Deming’s 14 points, and a correlation is indicated. There is also correlation found between the TQM values and the co-workers’ perception of their health.

The third part examines which of the aspects within the values grown from the quality movement are those that influence the co-workers perceived health. The results show significant correlation between the values and the co-workers’ perception of their health. Aspects found within the value “Top management commitment” were named; Empathy, Presence and Communication, Integrity, and Continuity. Within the value “Let everybody be committed” the aspects; Development, Influence and Being informed were found. These aspects are described in more detail and also in one model per value.

The result implies that the TQM values; “Top management commitment”, “Improve continuously” “Let everybody be Committed” and “Focus on customers” are important for achieving healthy organizations and sustainable health among co-workers.

On Monitoring and Control of Machining Processes1999Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The thesis presents several aspects related to the industrial and academic activities associated with monitoring and control of the machining process and machine tools

A survey of the industrial situation identified some key factors for a successful implementation of monitoring and control techniques. Applicable, relatively simple, systems for cutting-process monitoring and adaptive control are available on the commercial market today but the degree of industrial utilisation of the technique is low because the systems are experienced as hard to operate and use, and are at the same time considered unreliable. In order to promote a higher degree of industrial utilisation more work has to be devoted raising the performance of the system solutions.

An Integrated Supervisory Process Control (ISPC) concept is presented as an approach dealing with multi-purpose control requirements utilising the individual advantages of several sensors and modelling techniques. The ISPC system is supposed to operate as a conceptual integration of sensors, process models and different control modules. Two prototype systems, based on five-axis machining centres, for real-time control of the machining process are outlined. Different strategies for monitoring and control are developed, implemented and experimentally tried out, and the studies conducted demonstrate results that encourage further research work devoted to verification of the proposed control concept.

The results obtained in the initial experiments utilising methods for process control and monitoring, such as double exponential smoothing technique (DES), multivariate monitoring applied to signal tracking and artificial neural networks applied to cutting torque control, reveal that the different techniques have potential to improve the performance of monitoring and control tasks, thus contributing to the creation of more sophisticated and reliable solutions in the ISPC concept.

Portable rescue device and a method for locating such a device2007Patent (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

A portable rescue device and a method for locating, by means of a first rescue device set in a search mode, a second rescue device set in a distress mode. In the method, a distress signal carrying a device identification is received from said second rescue device. A first bearing and a second bearing to the second rescue device are obtained. The first and second bearings are taken from a first and a second position, respectively. A distance between these positions is determined. A current distance and a current bearing to the second rescue device are determined on basis of the first and second bearings and the distance. The current bearing and the current distance are communicated to a user of the first rescue device. The portable rescue device is used for performing the method and for that purpose it includes a first communication unit for distress signal transmission and reception; a compass; a processor; a user interface; and a mode switch for switching between a search mode and a distress signal mode. The first communication device has an antenna structure that provides directional capability.

    Towards Attractive Experiences2010Inngår i: 13th QMOD conference in Cottbus, Germany, 2010, 30/8-1/9, 2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

PurposeThe main purpose of this paper is to develop the concept of commercial experiences, helping providers to satisfy their customers’ needs and expectations.

ApproachTheories describing the concept of Commercial Experiences are analyzed through a quality perspective. The analysis was made through the Kano Model (Kano et. al. 1984), to build more knowledge about the customer’s need and expectations.

FindingsThe authors identify that focus on providing attributes of attractive quality can be a fundamental condition when providing commercial experiences. The paper raises the question for further discussion and future research to build more knowledge about the proposal that a commercial experience needs to contain attributes of attractive quality to actually fulfill the elements of a satisfying experience to the customer.

ValueThis paper increases the understanding of providing commercial experiences and points out the need to work with attributes of attractive quality.

A direct comparison of the machining performance of a variax 5 axis parallel kinetic machining centre with conventional 3 and 5 axis machine tools.2003Inngår i: International journal of machine tools & manufacture, ISSN 0890-6955, E-ISSN 1879-2170, Vol. 43, nr 11, s. 1107-1116Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The current trend within the Tool and Die manufacturing sector is to machine components directly from hardened material using high speed 5-axis machining. This has been driven by the increasing requirements for cost competitiveness and lead-time reduction. Significant research effort has been applied to the optimisation of the process with factors such as tooling and machining strategies being considerably improved. However, the underlying structures of the machine tools used have remained unchanged and still consist of a serial kinematic chain. One of the standard justifications for the development of machines designed around parallel kinematic chains is that they should exhibit inherently greater stiffness, have higher axis accelerations and be capable of generating significantly higher cutting forces than conventional serial machines. This suggests that they should be ideally suited to the direct manufacture of tools and dies from hardened material. The comparison of different machine tool types is a complex and difficult process, particularly when their structures are fundamentally different. This paper describes an approach used to compare the performance of three very different types of machines. The technique uses two parameters; surface finish and geometric accuracy to assess the relative performance of different machine tools when cutting hardened material. The method is used to compare a serial kinematic 5-axis machining centre, a serial kinematic 3-axis machining centre and a parallel kinematic 6-axis machining centre. The results of the comparison are presented in this paper wand show that all the machine tools performed to an equal standard for materials with a hardness of 54HRc but for very hard materials, 62HRc, the parallel kinematic machine out performed the serial machine tools.

Measuring the soft sides of TQM and Lean2010Inngår i: 13th QMOD Conference, 31 Aug – 1 Sept 2010 Cottbus, Germany, 2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

PurposeThe purpose of this paper was to examine TQM and Lean in regards to values and principles, implementation problems and measurements for success. The purpose was also to present an approach to measure organizational culture and values as a part of the implementation strategy for TQM and Lean.

Methodology/ApproachLiterature studies were conducted to examine TQM and Lean regarding values and principles, implementation problems and measurements of success. With the literature study as a base a questionnaire with statements about the main principles of Lean was developed to further evolve an existing survey used to measure the values ‘Leadership commitment’ and ‘Participation of everybody’.

FindingsThe literature study showed similar problems when implementing Lean and TQM but even though they are said to originate from the same roots it was found that there are some areas within Lean that are not quite so apparent in TQM. Based on the findings the already exciting measurement was extended with these principles with the purpose to create an approach to measure organizational culture.

Value of PaperA measurement approach can help managers to measure to what extent the values and principles of TQM and Lean are present within an organization, a prerequisite for achieving world-class quality.

Collaboration - a Key Factor for the Application of Discrete Event Simulation in Real World Manufacturing Industry2007Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In manufacturing industry, the application of Discrete Event Simulation (simulation) has not come to a breakthrough in all industrial sectors. Simulation technology in itself may appear abstract, and without internal competence or earlier experience the step to hire a simulation consultant is not obvious in all industries. This presentation provides a multifaceted perspective of the application of simulation in industry. The frame of reference found in methods for the analysis of the collaborative engineeringdesign process provides an inspiring and supporting perspective and gives an insight into the present state of simulation application for future improvement of simulation projects by mutual references.

SURFACE PROPERTIES OF IMPLANTS MANUFACTURED USING ELECTRON BEAM MELTING2016Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis summarizes the results concerning the manufacture of medical implants for bone replacement using electron beam melting (EBM) which is an additive manufacturing (AM) technology, and aims to satisfy the engineering needs for the medical functionality of manufacturing technology. This thesis has focused on some microscopic properties for surfaces and bone integration. The process parameters of EBM manufacturing were studied to ascertain whether they have impacts on surface appearance, as surface properties have impacts on bone integration and implant performance.

EBM manufacturing uses an electron beam to melt metal powder onto each layer in a manner akin to welding. The electron beam is controlled by process parameters that may be altered to a certain extent by the operator. There are individual process parameters for every material, and new parameters are set when developing new materials. In this thesis, process parameters in default settings were altered to ascertain whether it was possible to specify process parameters for implant manufacturing. The blood chamber model was used for thromboinflammation validation, using human whole blood. The model is used to identify early reactions of coagulation and immunoreactions. The material used in this study was Ti6Al4V-ELI, which is corrosion resistant and has the same surface oxide layers as titanium, and CoCr-F75, which has high stiffness, is wear-resistant and is commonly used in articulating joints.

The study shows that among the process parameters researched, a combination of speed and current have the most impact on surface roughness and an interaction of parameters were found using design of experiment (DOE). As-built EBM surfaces show thrombogenicity, which in previous studies has been associated with bone ingrowth.

Surface structure of as-build EBM manufactured surfaces are similar to implants surfaces described by Pilliar (2005), but with superior material properties than those of implants with sintered metals beads. By altering the process parameters controlling the electron beam, surface roughness of as-build parts may be affected, and the rougher EBM manufactured surfaces tend to be more thrombogen than the finer EBM manufactured surfaces. As-build EBM manufactured surfaces in general show more thrombogenicity than conventional machined implants surfaces.

Electron Beam Melting: Moving from Macro- to Micro- and Nanoscale2012Inngår i: Materials Science Forum, Switzerland: Trans Tech Publications Inc., 2012, Vol. 706-709, s. 532-537Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents some results achieved in the biomedical applications of the EBM® technology, and describes the resolved and unresolved challenges presented by modern medical implant manufacturing. In particular it outlines the issues related to the cellular structure design and metal surface modification. Moving to precision control of the metal surface at a microand sub-micrometer scale is a serious challenge to the EBM® processing, because it uses the powder with average grain size of about 0.04 to 0.1 mm. Though manufacturing of components with solidmesh geometry and porous surfaces using EBM® is quite possible, post- processing (for example chemical or electrochemical) is needed to achieve desired control of the surface at smaller scales to realize full potential of the technology for biomedical applications.

Leadership for Quality, Effectiveness and Health2010Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Leadership, quality, effectiveness and health are important factors in the achievement of organisational success. Three questions are addressed to study these elements:

    1. How do leadership values relate to leadership behaviours, quality methodologies and health in organisations?

    2. How do leadership behaviours relate to effectiveness and health in organisations?

    3. How can leadership tools be designed and used to promote health in organisations?

The research is based on five studies from three research projects. This research is reported in five papers. Study I concerned eight organisations in the middle of Sweden; the focus was on leadership values and behaviours. Study II concerned three successful organisations that received the award, ‘Sweden’s number one workplace’. Focus in this study was mainly on leadership behaviours. Study III combined results from Studies I and II with a focus on successful leadership behaviours. Study IV concerned the eight organisations in Study I. A leadership tool in the form of a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model was developed and evaluated. Study V was of two organisations in Sweden; the focus in that work was on the use of a leadership tool control chart designed to give managers statistically valid early warning signals about health in their organisations. Theory X and Y together with the three-dimensional leadership behaviour theory were used to assess leadership values and behaviours. The theory surrounding PDSA and control charts were used to develop leadership tools. The dimension of health is defined from a salutogenic humanistic perspective; which emphasizes individual well-being. The dimension of quality is defined as the ability to satisfy or exceed needs and expectations. Effectiveness is defined as the extent to which externally and internally defined objectives are fulfilled.

Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. Interviews, seminars with employees, collection of human resource and effectiveness figures, and questionnaires completed by managers and subordinates were used to collect data.

Managers with more Theory Y-oriented leadership values were rated by subordinates as high concerning quality methodologies and leadership behaviour dimensions. The subordinates of these managers tended to be healthier.

Two of the studies identified common groups of leadership behaviours in effective and healthy organisations: strategy and vision, communication and information, authority and responsibility, learning culture, worker conversations, plainness and simplicity, humanity and trust, walking around and reflective personal leadership.

These leadership behaviours fit into a leadership profile where all three of the dimensions of structure, relation and change are present. Of the three, the relation dimension is strongest and concluded to be a universal dimension.

The developed PDSA model seems to be a leadership tool that influences both leadership values and behaviour, particularly in the area of relation-oriented leadership behaviours. An early warning system built on CUSUM- and Shewhartcharts concerning the health indicators of self-assessed general health and new sickcases per employee was also found to be a powerful and usable leadership tool.

For future research, the explorative research findings can be quantitatively tested using representative and preferably cross-national data, with a longitudinal design.

Control charts as an early warning system for workplace health outcomes2011Inngår i: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 39, nr 4, s. 409-425Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts have not been widely used to monitor workplace health and work environments. This research and effort to develop a more accurate and easy to use management control system for employee health is important from a humanistic, societal and economic standpoint, as well as complying with laws that regulate work environments. Objective: The purpose of the study is to design and discuss control charts as an early warning system for workplace health outcomes to promote workplace health management. Another purpose is to discuss relevant factors in the concept of the Out-of-Control Action Plan (OCAP) as a response when a chart warns that the workplace process may be malfunctioning. Participants: Two Swedish organizations were selected as case study organizations: a department at a university and an elderly care operation in a municipality. Methods: This study was explorative and should be seen as a starting point in learning how to use control charts for workplace health management. Self-assessed general health and new sick-cases per employee were selected as indicators for the control charts. Results: An integrated early warning system with Cumulative Sums-and Shewhart-charts are presented to show a possible method as to how an early warning system can be structured through the use of statistical control charts. Conclusions: The conclusion of this study is that control charts, along with well-designed implementation, make up a powerful and useable managerial early-warning system which promotes workplace health and helps to prevent sickness absence.

Integrated Planning For Sustainable Building Production: An Evolution Over Three Decades2017Inngår i: Journal of Civil Engineering and Management, ISSN 1392-3730, E-ISSN 1822-3605, Vol. 23, nr 2, s. 319-326Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reviews the authors' work on Integrated Planning (IP) as a construction site management tool. IP integrates the different planning skills used by site managers, construction workers and craftspersons into an interactive group which manages a production planning process from the earliest stages to the end of a building project. The studies reviewed in this paper, performed over the last three decades, tested, longitudinally evaluated and refined the IP model for use in modern sustainable building sites. The refined model, Integrated Planning for Sustainable Building Production (SBP), includes the factors: leadership, health and safety, quality management and environmental management.

A sophisticated platform for characterization, monitoring and control of machining2006Inngår i: Measurement science and technology, ISSN 0957-0233, E-ISSN 1361-6501, Vol. 17, nr 4, s. 847-854Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The potential for improving the performance of machine tools is considerable. However, for this to be achieved without tool failure or product damage, the process must be sufficiently well understood to enable real-time monitoring and control to be applied. A unique sophisticated measurement platform has been developed and applied to two different machining centres, particularly for high-speed machining up to 24 000 rpm. Characterization and on-line monitoring of the dynamic behaviour of the machining processes has been carried out using both contact-based methods (accelerometer, force sensor) and non-contact methods (laser Doppler vibrometry and magnetic shaker) and numerical simulation (finite element based modal analysis). The platform was applied both pre-process and on-line for studying an aluminium testpiece based on a thin-walled aerospace component. Stability lobe diagrams for this specific machine/component combination were generated allowing selection of optimal process parameters giving stable cutting and metal removal rates some 8-10 times higher than those possible in unstable machining. Based on dynamic characterization and monitoring, a concept for an adaptive control with constraints based machine tool controller has been developed. The developed platform can be applied in manifold machining situations. It offers a reliable way of achieving significant process improvement.

Integrated approach for prediction of stability limits for machining with large volumes of material removal2008Inngår i: International Journal of Production Research, ISSN 0020-7543, E-ISSN 1366-588X, Vol. 46, nr 12, s. 3207-3222Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]
High-speed machining of thin-walled structures is widely used in the aeronautical industry. Higher spindle speed and machining feed rate, combined with a greater depth of cut, increases the removal rate and with it, productivity. The combination of higher spindle speed and depth of cut makes instabilities (chatter) a far more significant concern. Chatter causes reduced surface quality and accelerated tool wear. Since chatter is so prevalent, traditional cutting parameters and processes are frequently rendered ineffective and inaccurate. For the machine tool to reach its full utility, the chatter vibrations must be identified and avoided. In order to avoid chatter and implement optimum cutting parameters, the machine tool including all components and the work piece must be dynamically mapped to identify vibration characteristics. The aim of the presented work is to develop a model for the prediction of stability limits as a function of process parameters. The model consists of experimentally measured vibration properties of the spindle-tool, and finite element calculations of the work piece in (three) different stages of the process. Commercial software packages used for integration into the model prove to accomplish demands for functionality and performance. A reference geometry that is typical for an aircraft detail is used for evaluation of the prediction methodology. In order to validate the model, the stability limits predicted by the use of numerical simulation are compared with the results based on the experimental work.

Design av flödesorienterad montagecell: Utvärdering av layout och materialförsörjning vid Emhart Glass AB2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Emhart Glass is the world’s leading manufacturer of equipment, controls and components to the glass container industry. The goal of this project has been to identify improvements and propose cost saving solutions when moving one of Emhart Glass work cells in Sundsvall. The changes shall result in improved work environment and increased product quality. The method contains value stream mapping, concept selection and P-FMEA and complies with Emhart Glass goal to become a more Lean focused business. The way of working with Lean Production is to systematically decrease waste and focus on value added activities. The improvements in the work environment areas consider physical, ergonomic and psychosocial aspects. Concepts for supply of material and assembly process were created from the results of the observation study and the value steam mapping. After evaluation of the concepts, kitting and assembly with one piece flow appears to be the most qualified concepts. Kitting and one piece flow leads to increased quality, improved work environment and reduced cycle time. Results from tests made with prototypes of assembly pallets gave valuable insights that helped refining the concepts. A risk analysis was made in form of aP-FMEA and it showed a critical failure mode that required action. Kitting was identified as a possible action to the critical failure mode, which strengthens the concept of kitting as a preferred method. The project also resulted in a layout which improves the work environment and renders the possibility of one piece flow assembly. In order to meet future requirements with decreased cycle times, Emhart Glass isrecommended to standardize kitting in pallets for all their work cells and develop their internal transport system with a time based truck transport process.

    A process towards societal value within a community-based regional development project2012Inngår i: Proceedings of the 15th QMOD-ICQSS conference / [ed] S. Dahlgaard-Park, J. Dahlgaard, A. Hamrol, Poznan, Poland: Comprint , 2012, , s. 13Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to study and describe the processes of a community-based area development project and to compare it with a previously developed process map of societal entrepreneurship. The purpose is also to verify the process map.

Methodology/Approach - Observation and participating studies has been conducted at workshops carried out within the development project, the purpose of which is to create societal value. Data concerning the project have been collected, including an interview with the project leader. These data have been analyzed and compared with the previously developed process map, the illustration of the societal entrepreneurship process in order to verify the societal entrepreneurship process and to achieve a deeper understanding of the processes within societal entrepreneurship.

Findings – The processes, activities and tasks of a community-based area development project are described. It seems as if the main process has been used three times and a model that illustrated this is presented.  The earlier developed process map has been verified.

Value - The description of the area development project can help other communities to plan development projects. The illustration of the societal entrepreneurship process can be valuable for societal entrepreneurs who are planning a societal value initiative in some form. It can also be valuable for decision-makers and stakeholders who can contribute to, are concerned with, or may be affected by societal entrepreneurship.
