    Abstract [en]

    The factor analysis of qualitative parameters carried out in 968 patients with lung cancer helped identify certain features which may play the key role in the development and, consequently, diagnosis of various types of the disease. In workers of major industries, smoking proved a significant factor of higher incidence of lung cancer. Formation of the habit at an earlier age, its intensity and concomitant occupational hazards were found to increase the risk of cancer, particularly, in males. Mass screenings and questionnaire--based interviewing of smokers are suggested. Young age and heavy smokers should be included in groups at risk irrespective of

    Abstract [en]

    The MondiPackaging Dynäs pulp & paper mill in Sweden produces strong sack and kraft paper from chemical softwood pulp. Despite good quality a project was initiated by a need for less variability in paper quality, and less energy consumption. It was known that there is variability in incoming stock, and that the HC and LC refining strategies could be improved. The aim of the project is to reduce energy consumption by 10%, and to reduce quality variation by installing a new online fibre analyzer, PulpEye, and implementing modern modelling and control methodology. We have used multivariate subspace models in combination with optimization to create an OPC based interactive application for on-line operator support and optimization of kraft paper production. The application is now installed and is under evaluation. The specific refiner energy has so far been reduced with at least 25%. The decision support application is indicating even more reduction potential.

    In real-time industrial process applications, there is often a need to predict the effects of adjustments before actually effectuated. Multivariate prediction models based on historical data works fine for predictions as long as the new X data have the correlation structure preserved. This paper shows that such can anyway be used for �What if �� decision support in presence of correlated X variables, whenever it is possible to create a help model that predicts the influence of the manipulated X variables on the rest of the X variables.

    Abstract [en]

    Merging available sources of information is becoming increasingly important for improving estimates of population characteristics in a variety of fields. In presence of several independent probability samples from a finite population we investigate options for a combined estimator of the population total, based on either a linear combination of the separate estimators or on the combined sample approach. A linear combination estimator based on estimated variances can be biased as the separate estimators of the population total can be highly correlated to their respective variance estimators. We illustrate the possibility to use the combined sample to estimate the variances of the separate estimators, which results in general pooled variance estimators. These pooled variance estimators use all available information and have potential to significantly reduce bias of a linear combination of separate estimators.

    Abstract [en]

    Numerical simulations of time-dependent stochastic failure of fiber network have been performed by using a central-force, triangular lattice model. This two-dimensional (2D) network can be seen as the next level of structural hierarchy to fiber bundles, which have been investigated for many years both theoretically and numerically. Unlike fiber bundle models, the load sharing of the fiber network is determined by the network mechanics rather than a preassigned rule, and its failure is defined as the point of avalanche rather than the total fiber failure. We have assumed that the fiber in the network follows Coleman’s probabilistic failure law [B. D. Coleman, J. Appl. Phys. 29, 968 (1958)] with the Weibull shape parameter β = 1 (memory less fiber). Our interests are how the fiber-level probabilistic failure law is transformed into the one for the network and how the failure characteristics and disorders on the fiber level influence the network failure response. The simulation results showed that, with increasing the size of the network (N), weakest-link scaling (WLS) appeared and each lifetime distribution at a given size approximately followed Weibull distribution. However, the scaling behavior of the mean and the Weibull shape parameter clearly deviate from what we can predict from the WLS of Weibull distribution. We have found that a characteristic distribution function has, in fact, a double exponential form, not Weibull form. Accordingly, for the 2D network system, Coleman’s probabilistic failure law holds but only approximately. Comparing the fiber and network failure properties, we found that the network structure induces an increase of the load sensitivity factor ρ (more brittle than fiber) and Weibull shape parameter β (less uncertainty of lifetime). Superimposed disorders on the fiber level reduce all these properties for the network.

    Abstract [en]

    The present study, carried out in the Nordic countries, examines the characteristics of students' scholastic performance on items containing graphical artefacts, that is, bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs, selected from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey test. Graphical analysis of statistical data resulted in the observation of two major categories of performance by the students. The results of cluster analysis also confirmed the two approaches. One approach consists of items perceived as requiring identification, that is, focusing primarily on perceptual elements. The other consisting of items requiring a critical-analytical approach, that is, involving evaluation of the graphical system, active interaction with subject specific operators and forms of expression. The general observation is that the pattern of response is similar for all these countries, with items demanding an identification approach showing comparatively higher scores than for items perceived as demanding a critical-analytical approach.

    A Power Comparison of Different Tests in Inhomogeneous Populations - Test with a Density Adjusted Distance and Previous Suggestions1999Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    When testing for clustering in inhomogeneous populations with distance based methods we can either choose tests where the uneven density is taken into account. Examples of this approach are found in Whittemore et al (1987), Cuzick an Edwards (1990) and Diggle and Chetwynd (1991).

     

     

     

    An alternative approach is to define a new distance such that the uneven density is compensated for when the distances are computed, and once this is done, more traditional distance-based spatial methods can be used to formulate an appropriate test. This is the method chosen for this study, in which the performance of tests applied with a Density Adjusted Distance (DAD) are compared to the performance of tests according to Whittemore, Cuzick & Edwards and Diggle & Chetwynd by simulation.

    The tests are compared in different types of data sets and for various kinds of clustering. It is shown that no test is the optimal choice for all alternative hypotheses, and that the tests are unequally sensitive to the structure of the underlying data. Testing with DAD is often a good alternative, and this distance measure has also got potential for further use in analysis of spatial data.

    detta Working paper presenteras en statistikmodell som beskriver besöksmål, besökarna och deras attityder i turistområdet Höga Kusten i Kramfors kommun.

     

    Statistiken bygger på ett insamlat material som gjordes sommaren 1998. Totalt 1147 besökare intervjuades vid sex olika besöksmål på Höga Kusten. Hälften av personerna var dagbesökare. Främste anledningen till att besöka området var att se Höga Kusten-bron.

     

    Ett avsnitt behandlar också att information från vänner och bekanta som den viktigaste viktigaste orsaken till att besöka ett semestermål.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper describes different statistical methods that, from a theoretical point of view, can be used to compare groups of visitors on a certain destination taken in to account the visitors place of home. A new way of assessing space between individuals is introduced in which socio demographic issues and different geographical obstacles are allowed to influence the spatial structure. If, for example, two individuals are closest neighbours the distance between them is set to zero no matter how far apart they live. One of the merits of this type of methods is that they can be used to evaluate whether certain groups of visitors are over (or under) represented on certain destinations.

    Turister ställs inför många val. Vilket resmål ska man åka till? Vilka aktiviteter ska man välja på en turistdestination? Hur ska man bo? Hur länge ska man stanna? Hur man gör sina val styrs av många olika anledningar; information, resesällskap och kostnader.

    Under två somrar har ETOUR genomfört marknadsundersökningar bland cirka 2 350 besökare i Kramfors/Höga Kusten. Resultaten från dessa finns nu i en uppdaterad populärvetenskaplig skrift med titeln Turistens val. I den första undersökningen var syftet att karlägga motiven för besöket med fokus på aktivitetsgrad och informationens betydelse. Ett tydligt resultat från denna del var att information om Höga Kusten hade kommit från vänner och bekanta.

    Den andra delen av undersökningen inriktade sig på att fånga Höga Kustens profil och vilken bild besökarna hade av turistdestinationen Höga Kusten. Många förknippade som väntat Höga Kusten med den speciella naturkaraktären; bergen och vattnet. Däremot nämnde överraskande få de många kända kulturella miljöerna. Gästvänlighet och service fick högt betyg av besökarna. Undersökningen visade också klart att många av besökarna saknade olika semesterpaket i området, som skulle underlätta att hitta de kulturella upplevelserna.
