Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The business model franchise took root in Sweden in the 70s and has since then grown rapidly. Today, the estimated turnover for the Swedish franchise companies is SEK 250 billion, which is a great increase compared to five years earlier. Despite the fact that the business model is popular and widespread around the world, the research on the topic is not extensive. Criticism has been directed against the non-research regarding the relationship between franchise and entrepreneurship. Many scientists believe that such a link does not exist, while others say that it takes twoentrepreneurs, a franchisor and a franchisee, in order for the franchise concept to function.Previous studies within the field of research has discussed the link betweenfranchising and entrepreneurship using entrepreneurship experts'ʹ opinions on the subject. No previous study has however been performed in Sweden, where the actual franchisees has been used as the source. The aim of this essay is to study the degree of entrepreneurial orientation of Swedish franchisees. To reach the result of the essay, a quantitative method has been used, where a questionnaire was answered by 93 Swedish franchisees. The result shows that the franchisees apply innovativeness, proactiveness and risk taking in their business activities. Factors that has been used throughout the history to define an entrepreneurial orientated venture. The result also shows that a majority of the respondents consider themselves to be entrepreneurs.
