Abstract [en]

The HIBECO project has focussed on the human dimension and natural conditions of the mountain birch forest ecosystem and will formulatemanagement scenarios and development plans which will ensure future sustainability of these ecosystems. These aims have been achieved in an interdisciplinary manner, combining productivity, herbivory and socio-economics.

Large variations were found between provenances regarding winter and spring frost damages and growth pattern. Insect damages from Epirrita autumnata attacks were strongly dependent on winter temperature and growth form of birches. Comparative studies showed a strong reduction in the lichen cover of the Finnmarksvidda area since the 1960-ies, due to overgrazing from domestic reindeer and changed climate.

Traditional use of birch was documented by an extensive questionnaire. A dynamicmodel was developed, to know more about the long-term consequences of changed climate and land use within 100 x 100 km study areas in northern Scandinavia and Iceland.
