Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Paramedics are daily exposed in situations more or less perceived psychologically stressful. The stress that may occur during service often perceived differently depending on the individual. The research has been in the current situation most focused on stressors, but there is a need for a deeper understanding of how paramedics are experiencing stress and how they behave to manage stress.

Purpose: The study aims to describe ambulance personnel's experiences of stress and how they handle it.

Method: For the study were chosen selectively 21 people from an ambulance station in Västernorrland. Four focus group interviews was conducted and recorded and then analyzed by qualitative content analysis. Fourteen men and seven women aged between 25-63 years participated in the study and were represented by paramedics, nurses and specialist nurses.

Result: Ambulance staff's experience of stress was due to anything from insecurity with their skills, responsibilities and inadequate procedures. Lack of resources in the form of limited conditions, defective vehicles and medical equipment. Helplessness in the form of long distance to the patient, others inadequate procedures and being questioned by other medical staff. To handle this personnel prepared mentally, enlisted the help of colleagues, debriefing and their own experience.

Conclusion: The experience of stress was found in a number of ways. Often it was because of lack of practice and lack of resources from the organization. But it was even if ambulance personnel's own skills shortages. In order to handle stress in a positive way, it is important to dare to ask for help. It was also important to use past experiences, talking with colleagues and having debriefing in groups.
