Democracy in the Plural? The Concepts of Democracy in Swedish Parliamentary Debates during the Interwar Years
Mid Sweden University, Faculty of Human Sciences, Department of Humanities.
2012 (English)In: Contributions to the History of Concepts, ISSN 1807-9326, Vol. 7, no 1, 12-35 p.Article in journal (Refereed) Published
Abstract [en]

The article explores some of the composite concepts of democracy that became used in Sweden, primarily by the Social Democrats, during the Interwar Years. How these should be seen; as pluralizations of the collective singular democracy or as something qualitatively new? By showing how these concepts related to each other and to democracy as a whole, it is argued that they should be considered as statements about democracy as one entity, i.e. that democracy did not only concern the political sphere but was of overall importance throughout the whole of society. The article also examines the Swedish parliamentarians’ attitudes towards democracy after the realization of universal suffrage, and argues that democracy became perceived as such a positive concept that opponents of what was labeled democratic reforms had to re-formulate the political issues in other words in order to avoid coming across as un-democratic.
