Abstract [en]

Exploring Place-Community Dynamics: The Role of International Students' Place Attachment in a Tourism Destination" investigates the intricate dynamics of place attachment among international students in Östersund, Sweden. Through the innovative use of student-employed photography and content analysis, the research provides valuable insights into the multifaceted relationships international students have with their environment. By analysing emotions and experiences captured in photographs and hashtags, the study offers a nuanced understanding of how international students perceive and interact with places in Östersund and its surroundings. The research contributes to theories in human geography by bridging concepts from place attachment, sense of place, and tourism studies, establishing a robust foundation for exploring the complex interplay between international students, communities, and their environments. Practical implications for policymakers, urban planners, community stakeholders and educational institutions are also discussed, emphasizing the importance of considering both positive and negative aspects of place attachment. The study recommends incorporating insights into tourism planning and development strategies to enhance visitor satisfaction and loyalty. Overall, the research sheds light on the emotional dimensions of place attachment among international students, emphasizing the significance of social interactions, cultural immersion, and shared experiences in shaping their sense of belonging within Östersund.
