Abstract [en]

Starting from a post-qualitative approach, this study examines how childhood ideals are made prior to the implementation of a school reform within compulsory school in Sweden. The study is based on a socio-material perspective and will use a three-step method to analyze how childhood ideals are made within ‘lovskolereformen’ which is a part of the policy document ‘Grundskoleutredningen’ in Sweden. The theoretical understanding framework that supports this work in the study is Actor-Network-Theory (ANT) and a perspective on childhood that is linked to sociological studies of childhood. The questions that are asked in the study are: how can (non)human actors contribute to childhood ideals being made and how is children's (future)time valued in ‘lovskolereformen’. By asking these questions to the policy document, the results showed that childhood ideals are made based on how the roles of the various actors are active and transformative, and that the valuation of children's (future)time in policy creates conditions for the room for action that children actually have. The study invites further research to investigate and track discursive constructions of childhood ideals in society and how these can be connected to the lived childhood and where children actually are. The study is also an invitation to further research to investigate Actor-Network-Theory (ANT) and the post-qualitative methodology further.
