Abstract [en]

This research shows how restoration strategies can transform degraded wetlands in Jämtland County, Sweden, into efficient carbon sinks (improving biodiversity and ecosystem services). Wetland ecosystems play an important role in mitigating the effects of global warming by sequestering carbon and other environmental services. However, in Sweden's Jämtland county, forest soils have been degraded over the years of use, underscoring the need for restoration efforts to increase their resilience to climate change. The purpose of this research is to examine the restoration of wetlands in a local area from the perspective of global warming, focusing on the potential for carbon sequestration and the associated ecosystem benefits.

By reviewing the literature and analyzing successful wetland restoration projects in Europe (particularly in similar latitude areas such as Denmark, Norway, Finland and Russia) and identifying relevant restoration measures, the study aims to provide guidelines for effective restoration strategies of wetland restoration for the province of Jämtland.

Key components of this research include: 1) Assessing the Effectiveness and Adaptability of Wetland Restoration by conducting a review of established practices across the Nordic region and Russia, evaluating their suitability for Jämtland County's unique environmental context. 2) Analyzing Trends in Wetland Research and Advocacy by examining the growing body of scientific literature on wetland restoration and identifying key trends in research focus, contributing to a broader understanding of the field's evolution. 3) Showcasing User-Friendly Hydrological Modeling Tool for Wetland Restoration by modelling wetland degradation trends. 4) Developing a Scalable Dam Design for Hydrological Restoration by integrating engineering principles to create a versatile dam design and partnering with the Swedish Forestry Agency to implement the proposed dam design and complementary restoration techniques in a selected wetland within Jämtland County.

Overall, this project aims to provide a relieable framework for wetland restoration in Jämtland County, encompassing technical solutions, collaborative engagement, and policy recommendations. By addressing the specific challenges posed by climate change and historical land-use impacts, this research will contribute to the preservation of these vital ecosystems and their invaluable services for both the local community and the global environment.
