Abstract [en]

We are moving towards a time where the export of wood products increases, competition becomes tougher and where more and more sawmills are closed down. The companies goal is to produce the best material at the lowest cost. The purpose of the study was to compare the quality of the final product after the drying process on pinewood with an expected final moisture content in the range of 15-17%. During the drying process, the material may be negatively affected if the final moisture ratio is too high or too low. Where a high moisture ratio increases the risk of mold in the material, while a low moisture ratio increases the risk for the aesthetics of the material. The analysis for quality was carried out via two parameters, customer requirements and legal requirements. Customer requirements refer to the requirement the company had and legal requirements refer to the requirement the law has. The study was mainly carried out with tools from statistical process control and the data was collected via literature searches, close contact in the form of interviews with key personnel and data provided by the company. The data for moisture content of the material came after the drying process via two tests: moistspy and weight. The results showed an increased quality in almost all analyzes at the desired moisture ratio of 15%. In the case where the quality wasn’t better, the result was identical. The results also showed that there are many factors that play a role in the drying process, many of which cannot be influenced. Some conclusions from the study showed quality improvements at a desired moisture ratio of 15% and when materials of the same dimension are run simultaneously in the cross-circulation dryer. Furthermore, the conclusions could also be drawn that it is complicated to keep the drying process constant from start to finish. Because there are many influencing factors that cannot be influenced.
