The decision by Sweden to send military aid to Ukraina during its war with Russia is a unique decision from a Swedish point of view. Sweden has not sent military aid to a country in an active war since the Soviet Union invaded Finland during the second world war. To find out why this unique decision was taken, the motive behind the decision has been studied. The result shows that the primary motive behind the decision was to increase Swedens own security by aiding the Ukrainian military to fight Russia, thus lowering the risk of an armed attack against Sweden. The study also shows that the collective response against Russia and the arming of the Ukraininan military by other countries and international organisations has also been part of the deliberation why Sweden decided to send military aid to Ukraine.
