The purpose of the thesis has been to investigate how gender equality is presented in textbooks aimed at social studies. The survey focused on three textbooks in total and these were aimed at middle school and high school. As a theoretical starting point, the thesis has been based on Yvonne Hirdman's theory of gender systems and gender contracts. Carrol Bacchi's Whats the problem represented to be (WPR) has served as an analysis method for by asking already proven questions about the text's content. The questions are designed to examine what the text considers to be problematic, what underlying perceptions have influenced the image of the problem and what is left unproblematic or in silence. What the survey has concluded is that there is an overall consensus on the view of gender equality. There are some differences between the textbooks in what is considered relevant to shed light on from a gender equality perspective. Finally, it also appears that there are some areas that are left in the quiet or unproblematized.
