Abstract [en]
This study is an attempt to concretize and contextualize the fundamental values of the Swedish school by analysing different themes in the novel Doctor Glas. In this essay I mean to highlight concrete examples of different moral dilemmas and link these dilemmas to the different concepts of the fundamental values. Different concepts from the fundamental values will be presented with different meanings depended on the context in which they are presented and thus contextualized. The different themes that are analysed in Doctor Glas are categorized under different headings in the analysis. The various sections of the analysis deal with more or less all parts of the fundamental values. The school's fundamental values can be summarized as follows;
• The inviolability of human life
• The individual's freedom and integrity
• Equal value for all people
• Equality between women and men
• Solidarity between people
Thus, my aim is to analyse the novel Doctor Glas and examen how the protagonist Doctor Glas comes to a conclusion about the different moral dilemmas that exist in the novel and how his reasoning can be exemplified to create a larger understanding of the different fundamental values that exist in the Swedish school system today.
