Idag så finns det många licenser som företag har köpt in men som inte används. Problematiken kring att ha licenser som inte används är den onödiga kostnaden som förekommer. Detta problem uppstår på grund av en omedvetenhet på företag kring licenshanteringssituationen och de licenser som köpts in. Syftet med denna studie är att ta reda på de fördelar och begränsningar som förekommer med att utveckla i open source, och ifall det går att tjäna pengar på utveckling i open source. För att ta reda på det så har ett verktyg utvecklats som ge företag en överblick kring de avtal med licenser de har sålt till sina slutkunder. Företag har i verktyget även möjlighet att ge sina slutkunder en överblick kring de licenser som de köpt av företaget för att inga licenser ska inhandlas i onödan. Utöver en överblick så finns det funktioner som påminner företag och dess slutkunder om när ett avtal håller på att ta slut. Detta för att öka medvetenheten ännu mer. Resultatet av studien visar att det inte finns något hinder för att tjäna pengar genom att utveckla i open source. Pengarna tjänas inte via försäljning utan via underhåll och modifiering av mjukvara. Open source kan även leda till att mjukvara är gratis att använda och att externa utvecklare har möjlighet att vidareutveckla mjukvaran så att det passar deras ändamål.

Today there are companies that has bought licenses but not all licenses are used. The problem with licenses that are not used is that they bring a lot of unnecessary expanses. This problem is caused by the lack of awareness of the license management situation and the licenses that has been bought by the company. The purpose with this thesis is to find out about the benefits and limitations with development in open source, and if there’s any possibility to make money when developing in open source. To find out about this, a software has been developed to give companies an overview of their agreements and licenses that they’ve sold to their customers. With this software, companies have the ability to also give their customers an overview of the licenses that they’ve bought from the company. The software has functions that reminds the company and their customers when an agreement is coming to it’s end. This is to increase the awareness of licenses. The result in this thesis shows that there are no obstacles for making money when developing in open source. The money does not come from selling software, but from maintenance and modification of software. Open source can also lead to free use of software, and the opportunity for further development by external developers, so it may suit their needs.
