Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Due to a widespread ill health linked to working life, there was an interest in looking at health promotion and prevention initiatives, here in municipal activities. Purpose: The aim was to investigate municipal leaders' views on health and healthpromoting leadership, and the conditions for working to promote health. Method: A semi-structured web survey was administered in the spring of 2021 to 255 leaders in three municipalities in central Sweden. Collected data were analyzed with manifest content analysis, and the quantitative questions were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Result: The response rate was 37% (95/255) divided between 66% (n = 69) women and 31% (n = 29) men (p = 0.001). A larger proportion of men considered that they pursued health-promoting leadership compared with women (p = 0.022). The view of health was about balance in life where work, family and private life needed to exist in harmony, as well as that the view of health-promoting leadership was considered to be about an interaction between individual and organization. Optimal health-promoting leadership needed to be adapted to the individual, which was considered difficult as it requires more mandate, support and resources. Conclusions: A health-promoting leadership was about creating a balance between the individual and the organization, as well as about working methods that were not formalized or prioritized within the municipalities. More mandate, knowledge and support were requested to develop a more health-promoting leadership.
