Antenatal depression symptoms : A quantitative cross-sectional study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Depression is increasing both globally and in Sweden and is seen as one of the biggest public health problems in the world. The highest prevalence of depression occurs in women during her reproductive years where the incidence of antenatal depression is around 7-22% and is one of the most common complications in pregnancy. Depression during pregnancy affects both the woman and the child and involves an increased risk of serious complications such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, caesarean section and postpartum depression. The Edinburgh Depression Scale (EDS) is a validated screening tool to identify depression during pregnancy. Aim: The purpose of this examination was to investigate the prevalence of depression symptoms in pregnancy and to investigate whether there was a relationship between depressive symptoms and the woman´s background factors. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of 276 pregnant women who participated in the project Barnmorska Hela Vägen. The data collection contained standardized questions and valid instruments that were analysed with descriptive and comparative statistics. Results: The results show that the prevalence of depression symptoms in pregnancy was 13,4%. Background factors that were found to be significantly associated with depressive symptoms during pregnancy were living alone, poor physical and emotional health, and childbirth fears. Conclusion: The occurrence of depressive symptoms during pregnancy that emerged in this examination thesis emphasizes the importance of focusing on the antenatal period to identify mental illness, which is also a prerequisite for further support and treatment. Further research is recommended on exploring how to implement screening programmes for detection of antenatal depression.
