Abstract [en]

Hungary is the first and only member state of the European union to ever be designated as "partly free" by Freedom House. Hungary's government have received serious criticism regarding their democratic backsliding. The democratic regression in Hungary started with Fidesz victory in the 2010 parliamentary election. Article 7 of the Treaty was triggered against Hungary in 2018 in regard to the risk of a breach by Hungary of the values on which the European union is founded. The purpose of this thesis is to examine and describe if Hungary can be classified as a democracy. This is achieved by using descriptive idea analysis. Democratic theories constructed the theoretical framework for this thesis and through that it can be illustrated that Hungary is no longer a democracy.
