Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Political polarization is often based on the ideological differences when there can also be an affective polarization that is not based on ideology. This study examines how political actors mediate affiliation with their own political group, while at the same time neglecting the political group. The study also examines differences between government parties and non-government parties how the preparation of ingroups was conducted. With a theoretical framework consisting of social identity theory, affective polarization and negative campaigning, the study will explore how Swedish political actors can influence how affective polarization can occur. Through a qualitative thematic text analysis of party leaders conducted in Almedalen 2019, the result showed differences between government parties and non-government parties. It was also possible to see that parties that are more difficult to obtain government power but the power included in sitting in the parliament. Non-governmental parties that have stated that they are not allowed to cooperate with a government and parties that need to rely on other parties to be able to sit in a government are somewhat more negative in producing outgroups.
