Abstract [en]

Global socioeconomic and cultural transformations have drawn in many local communities in a process of rapid changes around the world. Social work as an agency of change is part of such transformations and is highly engaged in monitoring and projecting local changes. Many social workers are engaged in local empowerment projects in order to combat poverty and realise national developmental goals. This paper critically analyses empowerment projects in a local community in south India. Based on collected data, the shortcomings of development projects aiming at changing living conditions of marginalised people are explored. The study shows that the empowerment projects in the rural areas of Southern India follows the established Eurocentric understanding of development and fails to foster the emancipatory potential of local communities. It is argued that a progressive international social work should move beyond the established empowerment theories and practices and include combating structural barriers in an emancipatory manner.
