This work examines the effect of pH on the AOX formation in a D stage in an ECF light bleaching sequence. Carbon dioxide was added to the pulp, generating a bicarbonate buffer system in situ and stabilizing the pH around 6 before chlorine dioxide addition. Stabilization of the pH around near-neutral was hypothesized to decrease the formation of strongly chlorinating species, such as Cl2 and HOCl, so that the AOX formation is reduced. Obtained results indicated that an addition of carbon dioxide could reduce the AOX content in the D stage effluents with up to 30% without significant effect on the ISO brightness. The pulp kappa number and viscosity were slightly higher when carbon dioxide had been added. The reduction in AOX formation seemed to be related to a lesser degradation of hexenuronic acid in the pulps that were bleached with a buffered D stage.
